Something you guys must know before this tale is that I don't trust myself with money. If I have nothing stopping me, I will waste money. I have done it before, buying about 80 games during December of 2011, and these were console games, not $1 bundles. I've had myself limited to no Visa compatible bank card, because to make internet purchases, I was forced to walk to a post office, and pay a minimum of NZ$31 for a pre paid Visa gift card ($6 fees and the minimum card value of $25). Gave me time to consider if I should really spend the money.

Now my bank has upgraded anyone using the older strip bank cards with the new chip cards, all of which are Visa compatible for online use. I'm stuck with it. Bugger. I'm now forced to rely on my poor level of restraint to avoid spending money.

Can anyone suggest a quality box for my next home?

About the only advantage is that this would work with PayPal, unlike the pre paid cards without names and addresses. Another way to spend money I don't have.

I make this topic because I'm sure at least some of you have been in this position before. Any advice to help me limit myself?

Edit - Thanks for the suggestion to check about getting the bank to limit how much I can spend. If I can set that for online, it will be perfect.

Give your card to a loved one so you have to ask for it from them every time you want to buy something?

I don't live with my family (who have even less problem spending my money than I do, since it isn't their money) and have no significant other. My flatmate could be trusted to not spend it, but given how often he loses his own card...

what about a random person on the internet? we could hold your money for you
email one of us the cvc number, scratch it off the back of the card. the magnetic strip will still function in person purchases like supermarkets, but online you'll have only most of the number you need. delete the record of the number from your sent folder, pick somebody in another timezone to maximize the waiting period/time for the reply and remove the message from your inbox immediately after use to avoid temptation.

hmmm. I'd go with the ice block idea then. but tint the ice so you can't just polish the surface to read the number without chiseling it out

freeze it in a tupperware container, and just leave it in the freezer. you will have hours to decide if its worth it while the block of ice thaws.

I've been with National for about 20 years. Even if they have been swallowed by ANZ, I'm not so sure I want to go to the effort of actually changing banks and updating my information everywhere that needs it.

When you amass a debt of 13,000.00 you'll understand the value of the dollar and refuse to spend anymore.

My debts down to 12,850.00 now, but still. I know how to to purchase things and I think it was a really valuable life lesson.

Please tell me you didn't amass $13,000 in debt from video games alone... That would actually be quite impressive.

You should only use prepaid bank cards(some of them support paypal, you just need to find the right bank) . Don't get into the black hole of visa cards because since you're so vulnerable on spending money this would be a bad idea. With the prepaid card you can only spend as much money you have in your account and that would make you think twice if you wanna really add money to buy something you want to.

theres probably some sort of browser addon that'd let you block payment providers...if switching it off is too easy/quick maybe ask somebody to modify one to make you solve a puzzle or something to get in? :P payment would be you're accidental discovery of a niche market or something

Ask the bank to set some kind of cap. Or give up the card entirely.

You could even start playing those games. 2-3 at a time tops.

In any case, good luck. :)

This. While I keep my debit card's daily limit relatively high, my bank allows me to lower it even to $0 if I want to prevent its use. Then to use it, I'd need to call them, have them raise it, and wait a few hours for it to be implemented. I'm sure your bank has a similar cap implemented that you could use for this purpose.

Get a friend who you trust to be good with money. Call/IM/email them before any purchase you make and ask "is this a good idea?" Bribe them with beer/soda (depending on age) and pizza (or whatever food you get that is tasty and cheap in New Zealand) so they don't start hating you after getting 10 calls a day for a week.

The friends list would be my most recent win, since you sent it to my email through Steam, I'm added once I accepted it.

And since another user suggested it, I'll be looking into the limit.

I use U.S. Bank and they let me set spending limits for days, weeks, or months. If your bank does something like that you could have them limit your card to whatever monthly amount you would like to be spending on video games.

This is like publicly announcing how irresponsible you are.

If you think it's cool to waste all your money by buying a bunch of games that you'll never play and brag about it all day everyday on forums and in chats, then keep doing what you're doing. The only reason you're able to do it is because you have no responsibilities, the moment you have a car payment, kid, girlfriend/wife, apartment, utilities, food expenses, medical bills, you'll quickly learn that you have to grow up and games become last as far as priority goes.

You also use this as ammo to get people to buy you things. When you have money you quickly waste all of it on games you'll never play, then when you're out of money you constantly cry to everyone about how you're so broke and you have no money but you really want this game and then people take pity on you and buy you more games that you'll never play.

My advice is simple and shows immediate results, take off the diapers and get a job like real men do. Games can come later once you earn that bread. The problem isn't with your bank or debit card, the problem is you and only you can fix that.

I am pretty confident that he is a grown up man with a job.
Also having a job does not mean you'll stop buying games, the same way it doesn't stop people playing slot machines or buying drugs.
EDIT: also the "get a job like real men do" kinda bugs me, I'm a girl and have a job, what does that even mean?
And then there is the economic crisis,in my country youth unemployment touches almost 60%,not finding a job does not make you less of a man.Your comment is wrong on so many levels..

You completely missed the point of what I said. I never said having a job means you'll stop buying games, I said games become last on the list of things to buy after you have payed all your bills. When did buying drugs and playing slot machines become a responsible thing to do? I'm not even sure if you know what you're trying to say. I'm in chat with him everyday and he has said he is unemployed so please don't assume he has a job and I'm just talking out of my ass. Get your facts strait before taking my comment personal when it doesn't have anything to do with you and is not directed to you in any way.

Buying games compulsively can be an addiction the same way playing slot machines is,that's what I was trying to say, that's what you completely missed.

First you say "having a job does not mean you'll stop buying games, the same way it doesn't stop people playing slot machines or buying drugs", now you say "buying games compulsively can be an addiction". Don't change the context to make it seem like I was the one who missed the point. He doesn't have an addiction to buying games, he has no self control or responsibilities. There is a big difference between a drug addiction and buying a game.

My girlfriend actually had a similar setup for a separate savings account, she had it setup with only an ATM card so she couldn't just spend it without having to drive to the ATM to get cash, then last month her bank decided everyone gets debit cards now. It was somehow cheaper for them or something, good luck on your self restraint.

One advice is never add to paypal a card that is directly tied to your bank account, worse don't even think of adding you bank account to paypal.Same applies for websites that don't accept paypal and you have to enter your card info,if someone steal that data, they'll have your entire bank account in their hands,NOT A GOOD IDEA!
What I currently do is have my bank account with a card that I use for payments and withdrawal only.I then have a prepaid visa card that I've added to my paypal account and that I use for online purchases only, this way not only I feel safer but I think keeping thinks separate is a good thing. The good thing is I can directly refill the card from my bank account,so I don't have to go to the post office.
ALSO for a house I suggest this they don't look that bad!
