This. Activity is pretty much what's needed. Though it doesn't hurt to ask sometimes, some groups get so many people adding them and demanding an invite (sometimes quite rudely even) that it just gets frustrating. That's the main reason for the "You will get invited when you deserve to be", usually.

If you are active, people will notice that and either invite you or recommend you for an invitation.

How are they elitists? You haven't even said thank you for half the giveaways you joined. If anything they are generous and you are ungrateful.
