I think it was a great idea, but in my opinion Valve screwed it up.

1) Cards themselves are lame. Take Half-Life 2 for instance. It has a ton of cool characters and enemies: Barney, Dog, headcrabs, walkers, etc., instead we get a metrocop, Alyx, and G-Man, and then 5 different Gordons in different poses...

2) You get to collect the same 9 cards 5 times. Couldn't it have been 5 unique sets? Why on earth would I collect the same cards more than once? Just to get a slightly different badge? This is just grinding in the worst MMO traditions.

3) Cards disappear once you craft them. In this case, you are not collecting cards, you are collecting badges. I actually want to see my cards after I collect them. Wouldn't you?
Edit: As someone pointed out below, Game Card Binder could solve this issue.

4) Since we are not really collecting cards, then the 'rewards' of collecting them are also lame. Some of those emoticons are god awful: blue square box for being in the cards beta? I'm sure I'll use it in all of my conversations >_>

If I got anything wrong, please correct me since I have not crafted any of my cards yet (and am not planning to, unless I get to keep them after crafting)

To summarize: Steam collectible cards could be neat, but in practice they are not really collectible, or even cards. Just another way to cash in.

Thanks for reading my rant :)

What other way(s) of collecting cards would you propose? I know many people have said achievements, but these can easily be exploited. Trading, on the other hand is quite good. It encourages people to only collect cards and get badges for the games they really like, by trading away spare cards of other games.

I have no spares cards, I have 1/2 of every collection for all my TC games now : /

And you want badges for ALL of your games? There's probably one that you want more than the other, so just trade those cards for cards of the game you want. That's what I meant by the post above.

The point of Trading Card is to collect them all (that and playvgames with them). Yet Valve force us to buy it from other users. Thats just stupid.

Why do people act like they are being forced to collect them?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

You dont get it... No one acts they are forced to get them. But the people who want to get them are forced to either deal with a half of the cards from each game or trading away all of them just to complete one set 5 times.

You said "Yet Valve force us to buy it from other users.", that sounds like you are saying you have to collect them, and selling your cards and buying games isn't an option. Anyways, yes, if you want to get them you have to trade for them. They are trading cards you know.

Ever played a TCG? You mostly try to sell your dubbles for other cards you don't have. And since you only can get a full set by trading all your other cards. Thats not how a TCG is supposed to go.

Permalink

If you have a full set then you haven't traded all your cards. All of the steam cards are a part of it.

Actually, you get 10% of cards since you can craft each badge 5 times. And that is assuming you won't bother with foils...

There are some good cards as images I mean. (ex. Brutal Legend). You get coupons for games or DLC's for games (I don't know if it is for the specific game or just random DLC discount).
For me it is also not that good idea that your cards disappear after you make a badge. They could make your first set stay but not be usable in any other way other than taking your inventory space.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I agree that some cards are interesting. But Valve came up with the whole system, and has the most resources, so one would think their cards would be the best. Instead they just feel lazy, and purely for profit.

Instead of just leaving collected sets in the inventory, they could be transformed into a showcase you can put on your profile. Or maybe just add a new inventory category for collected cards. There are many better ways of handling this then just make them disappear.

In response to the third point you made in your original post, Valve are planning on implementing a trading card binder to show all of the cards you've collected, "including those you've crafted into a badge." Perhaps, they'll make that binder available as one of the profile showcases too.

Permalink

Didn't know about the binder, thanks for pointing it out. That would be nice and more in the spirit of collecting cards. Once that is available, I'll craft my cards :)

Maybe they were too busy persuading other developers. Or just as you said lazy :D As I looked around to see how the cards looked like (here) and top be honest it seems not only Valve were the lazy ones. Or it may be me that just want to see more than just a "profile" pic of some of the characters in game.
Forgot that I read some days ago about the binder as quislor mentions. That would be a good feature.

I totally agree with you , when I joined the beta I hoped that the system will let you enjoy of collecting cards and stuff , and not collecting badges that you need to pay real money or other stuff.

I thought it will be like , play the game and collect cards , maybe from events and etc. , and the cards should be untradeable and unmarketable , so there will be no leachers and that kind of stuff.

I don't think you know what 'leechers' actually means. I understand your point, but clearly, Valve's intention was that the cards will be traded by users, to collect badges that they really want.

Yeah but I hate that this is all about money , I mean , you can't get level 5 badge without wasting a lot of money =/ , so thats kinda sucks , but as I said to the guy above , I'm thinking about the cards in totaly different way :)

I agree with you, I was very much disappointed when I realised that 1) only half of the cards drop from actual gameplay and 2) there are no card drops AT ALL anymore after you got those mentioned under 1) ... I wouldnt care if theyd make the drops A LOT rarer if only I could get all of them on my own.
It`s just yet another way to earn money, but in no way a fun trading card (ish) system

I think that aspect is fine. Otherwise, why would you trade? By not giving you all of the cards, it encourages you to trade. I mean if you collect anything in real life, you can't just find it lying on the street, can you?

Comment has been collapsed.

I get what you mean, but for me its troublesome because I usually only own games I plan on playing - I wouldnt buy a game for the sole purpose of idling it and using its cards to trade for the ones I want.

I thought of trading card games I used to play and collect when I was younger. Of course you always had to buy new packs to get more cards, but you always had the chance to get new ones and duplicates to use for trading. The booster packs (considering how rare they are) just dont make up for that. As of now, once you ran out of duplicates, there is nothing left for you to trade with and you are forced to buy. At the very least, they should reset the card drops after crafting a badge.

They added boosters, but the best way is of course to trade the ones you don't want for ones you do.

1) "Series 1", via the individual game's card page (i.e. http://steamcommunity.com/id/NucularSnaiper/gamecards/220/)
2) Yeah, multi-level badgers are kind of lame, with how scarce the cards are so far, but I can understand they wanted people to collect badges for their favorite games, and kind of express themselves with getting the highest level for their most favorite. But no... it's... pretty lame.
3) Yeah, that would have been nice -- maybe have a "binder" full of redeemed ones that you can't "play" with anymore, but can still at least gawk at and have "collected" ticked off. Or even the reverse, you can only "play" with the ones you've turned into badges. (Assuming cards will eventually have a way to "play" with them.)
4) Since everything's Marketable, I don't think it's that bad. Some of the rewards have to be better than others, unless we all turn into robots without opinions and preferences.

That's not what I'm saying. This sums it up nicely: "I kinda like the idea of cards and some of them are nice but the way it 'works' is just plain stupid." I like the idea of collectible cards, but I don't like the way Valve implemented this.

I agree with you. It's just a huge cash grab the way it's now.
Backgrounds: Well, yeah... This is no true social network and people don't visit my profile often enough to make backgrounds useful
Emoticons: Ugly as hell. Some of some are cool (balloonicorn) but emoticons are supposed to express an emotion or a a mood. I can't think of a situation where a crate emoticon would be of any use
Steam level: Nice idea to see the involvement of a user at a glance (that was the reason Valve mentioned for implementing it). With this implementation practically worthless since a few bucks will get you more levels than many years of actively participating
game badges: Theoretically they show how much a user likes a game. Now worthless, since a few bucks will give you every badge at lvl 5

You are wrong in one point: they will have a ledger to show off all the cards you crafted, it's just not implemented yet. This is said on several occasions. So, feel free to craft badges, your cards are not disappearing, they will be visible... just not right now.

Don't have time to keep up to date with all of the announcements, but thanks for pointing it out. I've edited the OP with this information. Still, I'll wait for them to deliver before I craft anything. Don't want to wait 5 years for the Binder ;)

Even without a binder, you can still click on the badge for each game and view the cards along with the HD artwork (which in some cases IS very nice, though sometimes is kind of lame).
