Personally, I have a middle class Lenovo G580 laptop with gt635m, 8Gb ddr3 memory and Intel core i5 3230m (2.6-3.2GHz). While I can play with most games at medium-high details, I still think that it is only a perk and laptops are never meant to be gaming devices.

I think you already know what most people will choose. It's just not worth asking.

I think it depends on the person. If you travel a lot and want to play all games you would go with a laptop and a mouse but if you don't travel that much I guess it would be better to get a gaming desktop pc.

But even then you can argue that you want to play outside and stuff so :).

That's true though. Still, laptop gaming is not so much fun imo.

Even if you travel often, investing in a handheld like the Vita is smarter and more convenient than splurging out tons of money on a gaming laptop.

A "gaming" laptop doesn't have to be dedicated to just gaming. If you are actually traveling, you will probably have a laptop with you anyway, may as well be a gaming laptop.

That doesn't exactly make sense :P There are plenty of affordable laptops/netbooks out there. There are also "gaming laptops" which are significantly more expensive.

Well, instead of having a gaming PC, an affordable laptop and a handheld console, you could get a gaming laptop. If you add up all the costs, a gaming laptop doesn't sound that bad after all :P

I was thinking more like buying a gaming desktop AND a handheld console instead of that gaming laptop ^^

If you're traveling though, it's unlikely that you won't have a laptop with you. Then again I don't know, people use their overly smart phones for all the internet stuff on the go, so maybe a laptop isn't that important...

If you are going to go outside, for heaven's sake it shouldn't be to play video games.

Personally I think it is a completely worthy investment to build a gaming desktop. If done correctly you can have an above average PC for a decent price.

My Specs:

8 gb RAM

750W PSU

Nvidia GTX660 GPU

i5 4670k processor

Corsair 300R Carbide Series Case

(I forgot which motherboard I have but I know it's ASRock)

Price: ~$900 USD

I hope this helps you determine your answer.

And then there's "gaming laptops" with shit tier CPU, mediocre GPU and double the price.

And why isnt playing on a laptop fun? I enjoy playing something on a laptop when Im not home. Its the same game after all and it doesnt really matter that I play on med settings rather than high on the desktop.

You clearly have never used a decent gaming laptop. A good laptop can run any game at 40+ fps maxed out at 1080p, and that's assuming we're talking about really demanding games.

Laptops are good for people who move a lot like students who go to school far from home and have to go into dorm. I was constantly going back and forth across the country to live here for 4 months, there for 1 month, back over there for another 5 months, etc. I am not lugging my desktop and monitor with me across the country.

I believe laptop might be a satellite device for your desktop if you have to travel or have some friends visiting you who you would like to play with. And of course you can get gaming laptop if you have much money and don't worry about overspending them. But IMHO gaming desktop is mush sheaper and gives "better bang for the buck" because it's much easier to upgrade.

I have a gaming laptop. I travel more than I'm at home. I can play any of my steam games (with room to spare on high graphics)(plus many more with steam sharing) and keep anything I don't play constantly on externals. I'm also frequently out of cell range so being able to carry my entire system in a shoulder bag with a spare battery lets me keep on working (and gaming).

I will just say that gaming desktop is master race. Laptops are so much expensive, and if you compare a laptop to a mgaming desktop with the same price, desktop is so much better in all.

Desktop, but don't get one from those mainstream brands like HP or Dell, too overpriced. Get a custom built one (or those like prebuilt ones from falcon and ibuypower)

I'd decide depending on how often you're at home to play. If you'd like to play on the road or where ever you're going a laptop would be more convenient. Personally I'd never trade in my desktop for a gaming laptop. I know that I can upgrade several parts whenever I want or need. And I've got bad experience with laptops. Not one of my 3 middle class laptops lasted more than 3 years tho' I haven't been playing a lot of games on it.

Personally I'd go with a desktop like I have. More room to upgrade. Laptops not so much. My current rig I built 2 years ago now and still haven't met a game yet that can push it to it's limits. Cept maybe battlefield 4 if I have another game running in the background.
Laptops are great in their own right for the mobile gamer. I just don't care for them much myself

How do you define "smoothly?" I have a GTX 770 and there are plenty of games that require AA or other settings to be turned down in order to stay at 60 FPS.

While I would prefer a laptop due to my travels, the price:performance ration compared to a desktop was too lopsided, so I ended up just building my own desktop for gaming.

Your laptop is not a gamer laptop. The 635m is not a graphic card from gamer. Lenovo don't have any gamer laptop. Gamer laptops are Dell Alienware, Toshiba Qosmio, MSI GT/GS, Asus ROG.
For the moment a good gamer laptop it's a least CoreI7-4700MQ 8Go 770M

Wrong. Lenovo y510p with gt750 sli is a solid model with a good price tag.

1 decade ago

gt750 is not really a graphic card for gamer. Graphic card for gamer are Nvidia GTX not GT. With a GT750 you should reduce a lot of settings to play Battlefield 4. 770m or better are recommended. If you have less money you can try 670M.

i don't like laptop for gaming, tough if i didn't have a choice to have a desktop, i think i would still get a non gaming laptop, but
with something half decent from intel so i can at least launch stuff on low settings if needed.

Some people don't really have a choice tough, so it's gaming laptop or nothing
