Long study periods tend to lead to me having writer's cramp way too often for my liking. I've tried different positions and taking 15 minute breaks but my word it just won't stop happening. Anyone here deal with it and have found their own solution?

Try to do something completely different, maybe watch a movie, go out with a friend or alone to chill in a park and watch nature do what it does, whatever floats your boat to relax. Works almost every time for me, just clear your head and don't think about it for a while, fifteen minute breaks would be way too short for my liking.

I'm not sure if it helps for hand cramps as well but have you tried Magnesium tablets?
Cramps often have to do with Magnesium deficiencies. Warmth also helps to relax the muscles when you're having or just had a cramp.

Haven't tried pills or tablets of any sort for Writer's Cramp as it seems a bit excessive to me unless it was really painful.

If it comes from actual writing, pay attention to how you're holding your pen/pencil. Keep your grip loose, that keeps tension off the muscles thus reducing the risk of cramps.
Massaging helps.
Pre-emptive breaks too, but if the cramp hits, 15 minutes isn't going to be enough for it to go away completely. Most cramps take an hour or more to completely clear. (the larger the muscle, the longer it will take.)

I get it from drumming occasionally, and found that doing stretches with my hands helps quite a bit.
Even something as simple as making a tight fist, holding it for 10 seconds, then stretching your fingers out as hard as you can for another 10 seconds helps me. Also, squeezing a tennis ball (or something similar) for 5-10 seconds, then releasing and repeating helps.

Are you getting these from typing or hand-writing? What kind of studying are you doing? I'm curious since most of the time I studied in college, it didn't involve a ton of writing.

Hand-writing. A memory retention trick I learned when studying for some hard exams. It seems to stick in your mind when you actually have to physically write it out which helps you remember a lot better (for me at least).

I'm studying for a certification in order to have something when I get out of college with a Degree.

That's fair. The way I grew up writing by hand is not the standard way, so mine tends to cramp up often, and having a jammed pinky on my right hand (AKA my dominant hand) makes it worse. I type whenever I can as a result. If the physical writing aspect is important to you, that's not gonna help, so I guess that's off the table. =P

This might sound odd, but do you write in print or cursive? Cursive sometimes is easier for people to write in for longer periods of time, so I figured I'd ask.

Try holding your hand in a sink full of warm to hot water until it cools down to room temperature. Usually only takes a couple minutes. Kinda wasteful of water, maybe, but it helps me.

Also, the previous poster that suggested Magnesium vitamin tablets is right as well, but also Potassium works too.

However, don't bother with the tablets that you can buy from a drug store. They're ridiculously expensive and the dose is so minor that it's not worth it. Just eating an average sized banana a day gives you four times the amount of Potassium that one Potassium vitamin has and they're much cheaper and healthier for you with the additional nutrition.

If you can't have bananas or if they're just not available in your area, raisins are a good cup-for-cup substitute..

I had a banana smoothie (homemade) which is basically lots of banana, some honey, and some protein powder. Sadly, hasn't mitigated my pain or occurrences. Though it tastes good :v

Well, yeah. A single smoothie won't help right away. You'd have to add it to your normal diet and stick with it for at least a few days if not a few weeks before you saw any improvement. However, this would be a long-term treatment if a vitamin deficiency is indeed a problem for you.

If you're looking for a quick fix, damn any pain you may have in the future, just pop some ibuprofen and call it a day.

No matter what you do, over usage of wrist will result in carpal tunnel. Since you seem to be in school, this might be a bad sign but it is good that you realise it early.

How long do you study before resting for 15mins? Ideally, it will 1hr imo for activities like looking at monitor, tv, reading. As these activities strains your eyes. What do you do in those 15mins? Do you do wrist exercises? Wrist rotations, generally loosening up you hands and wrists, do some stretching, walk around, reach for the ceiling, etc. If you just rest and sit down for 15mins it does not really help anything. Make it a habit to rest, stretch, walk around. It is not a miracle routine but overtime you should feel better.

Study periods differ.

Usually a straight hour to three hours. Sometimes pain prevents me from going on for long and I have to break. I do walk around, stretch, do some wrist/fingers exercises (helps to know from piano) but when the pain hits, it just refuses to budge :c

IF the pain refuse to budge then the muscle is already strained. You might want to consult a doctor, get some pills or medication that will help loosen your nerves before they clot-up. If it is left untreated for years like my mum, it can lead to numbness and loss of hand muscles basically loosing strength in your hands.

You need to rest your wrist more, find an alternative to study like reading out loud. Some muscle treatment of cold and warm temperature like a warm towel and ice bag may help in short term. Basically, its the blood vessels tensing up and clogging up due to overuse. I would say when you are doing wrist rotations pick up a light bottle of about 500ml and so some rotation with weight to help strengthen your wrist.

The doctor at this stage will provide you with better advise on how to keep the condition from worsening. you are already in pain don't push it. Since you mentioned piano, it means you are someone whom used the wrists for long hours and carpal tunnel isn't uncommon in that regards. You have a long way to go, it does help to learn to properly take care of yourself than regret being frail as you grow old.

Remember, recovery will take awhile and will get worse if you do not take proper care now.

If possible, use a voice software instead of writing/typing. See below for one I use. If you want a better version, you can look into buying Dragon Software.

Other options- try yoga, watch hand/gliding stretch videos on You Tube, and read more about carpal tunnel/Ergonomics to learn about symptoms and prevention. There are a lot of good resources online and try a mix of different methods to see what works best for you.

Book I have borrowed from library and recommend: It's Not Carpal Tunnel Syndrome!: RSI Theory and Therapy for Computer Professionals.

I do a lot of writing (working on a book actually), and I prefer doing my rough drafts on paper.

If I start getting a hand cramp, like soon as I notice it, I try to massage it out and do some hand stretches. Might not be the best advice, but I have a prescrip for muscle relaxers too, so when the massage and stretches dont help, I pop a relaxer and take a break until it kicks in. Also maybe not the more helpful advice, but if it keeps happening, you could also meet up with your doctor/a doctor and see if they can do something to help you out

My lady gets cramps in her hands very often, from writing (or excessive gaming) and she's actually got some injections when she had to use her right hand a lot for work. Other than that, things that work to relieve the symptoms: a good warm water soak; usb warming mittens, soft circular massages and slow stretches. A doctor recommended using a Gripmaster to exercize and strengthen her hands. It hasn't worked so far though her guitar skills have improved ;)

A warm cup of whatever.... for me itโ€™s coffee,with some tasty creamer... and take 5 min to sip, reflect, meditate on my studies while lightly grasping cup with both hands. The warmth from cup and the stop to relax does wonders!
