So Wolfenstein: The New Order is going to be released soon for PC on Steam.

I was considering getting it, but decided to check some of the playthroughs. The graphics look pretty good, but it looks like a railshooter. The gameplay appears to be insanely linear, really turned me off from buying it. Also I noticed images of new weapons you pickup flash up explaining how to use them, horrible design.

How do you guys feel? Anyone plan to purchase it or already pre-purchased it?

Also I don't see multiplayer listed, so it's basically $60 for a linear single player campaign...

Looks like it's going to be a pass for me, maybe pick it up for $5-$10 in a couple years just to see if I was right. I'm getting really annoyed that most of the single player games are so linear. I want smart AI, I want levels that can be explored, I don't want set paths.

Thoughts?

By the sounds of it there are 2 different storylines and the possibility of either playing stealthily or guns blazing. Just what I heard.

Yeah I read that too, but look at the gameplay. You walk in a forward direction, pick up guns, kill enemies. Maybe you get to pick a few different paths, which change up the story. But overall it looks like game design from the 2000s not 2014. Everything is scripted, AI is mentally challenged, image explanations within the game.

I was just playing the original Dues Ex yesterday, and the AI there from what I saw is better than what I am seeing in these playthrough videos.

The thing that I think looks good about it is the fact that it's a bit old school. As in you need to pick up health to stay alive instead of it just regenerating. Probably won't get it, but it don't look too bad imo.

I could be wrong but old school games like Quake and Doom, had far more complicated levels than what I saw.

I haven't seen any gameplay, but all I can hope is that they stay true to previous games in the series.(except the last one) But if I were you I would wait for a sale anyway like you already said.

I wouldn't base your opinions off of random videos on YT. Chances are the people playing have it on a low, if not the lowest difficulty setting, making the AI look like retards and the whole game look like a cakewalk which you can simply waltz through in a straight line. In fact, the game is MEANT to be explored. Sure, some of the levels are pretty linear, but there are so many esater eggs and what not to find in out of the way areas.

I don't miss the complicated levels of old games. It's not really all that entertaining to search for 25 minutes for a key card, or secret wall panel.

The story trailer looked good. Intriguing setting, it got me interested.
Then the other trailer came out. It was meant to show how you could play either stealthily or take a more direct approach. The only thing I could really see was an ugly and plain level. It turned me off completely.
I don't mind playing a linear game from time to time, as long as it has nice setting and flavor (Bioshock Infinite, to say one), but that ugly and generic zone looked like a bad Alpha Access game. :/
I really hope for them they picked a bad level to show. :)

From what I saw the level design is okay as far as visuals, but very linear.

It doesn't look like a rail shooter to me...seems like it has stealth also which usually means various ways of going across a level.

Permalink

The stealth element looks tacked on to me and very basic, you can crouch and go behind a enemy and knife them. In the video you can see the enemy turning to the side which in any realistic scenario make you visible but they don't see you. I don't think you can kill every enemy in stealth anyways, because it all looks pretty scripted.

I've been downloading for 10 hours, yes 10 hours. It just finished downloading 5 minutes ago, and now it says 20 minutes till it's ready to launch for some reason. They really should've released the pre-load earlier, especially with the size of the game. But oh well, I'll finally be able to play it in 15 minutes! :D I just had to rant about the downloading part.

I saw that earlier, he did a good job explaining it and generally agree with TB 90% of the time. The initial playthroughs I saw the game appeared more linear than TB's video, I'm guessing I was watching the first levels. However I still see the game as being quite linear, I think the stealth part isn't that great and very simple, the AI is very poor.

This game appears to be quite similar to Prey, Quake 4, Doom 3, Rage, Duke Nukem Forever as far as progression and in some ways graphics. I played all of these games, thought they were okay for the time but it's a shame that a modern FPS in 2014 is still so linear with such crappy AI. For $60 it seems extremely expensive for maybe 20 hours of single player. That's $3 per an hour of gameplay. If it was priced in the $20-$30 price range on launch it would make sense, especially since there is no multiplayer or co-op or anything else really.

I also noticed in TB's video the level design is a little bland at times, textures aren't that great in certain areas as well. It's reminiscent of a basic corridor shooter. That weapon that cuts into certain areas looks interesting, but I'm sure it's mostly a gimmick. They took many concepts from COD games and combined it with 90s shooters.

I would like to see a story driven FPS single player game that places you in a large area, and let's you progress in a non linear fashion. Something that has multiple exit points, something that allows you to go back. I want to see really intelligent enemies. If they have low hp, they run away and attempt to get reinforcements. They run out of ammo, they try to find other weapons. I want to see enemies that do not spawn in areas magically but have some explanation how they got there, especially if you backtrack and all of a sudden there are a dozen enemies teleporting into an area. I want to see level destruction, why can't I blow open that door when I have a rocket launcher, or make a huge hole in the wall to enter a room.

Maybe I am asking for too much. I've been a huge fan of Wolf, Doom, Duke and Quake games all my life. But it's time to make them more interesting, the forumala for these games seems to have gone backwards in some ways. You have smaller levels, more hand holding, the same stupid AI from 1996 and zero innovation. At least when Half-Life2 was released there was some interesting physics and unique weapons. But now it's all been done before and it's getting boring.

Machine Games is a new studio, so I wouldn't judge the game before actually playing it yourself. The studio is made up of several people from Starbreeze Studios, the creators of The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay and The Darkness. Both of those games had multiple choices for how you could play the game and were both strong in terms of narrative. I still regard Escape from Butcher Bay as one of my favourite games of all time which is why I have confidence Wolfenstein: The New Order will impress me.

Linearity is a thing of the past, it's OLD SCHOOL and that's exactly what this game is about: a blast from the past, a throwback to the good old Doom days. If you can't see that, it means you're not a real hardcore gamer, but more like new age hipster Call of Duty lover. Not all games can(or should) be sandboxes. The previous Wolfenstein game tried to be a sandbox and failed miserably. Getting back to basics in a franchise so respected among veteran FPS players(almost a legend) might be the key to success.

GOTY. Sincerely. The gameplay is really fun, two different timelines and four unlockable challenging modes. But the story. That's what makes this a home run. If it were just killing nazis with really awesome guns on land, sea, and space that would be enough. But this game's plot so completely immerses you as the character of William J. Blazkowicz that you feel each pang of sorrow, each satisfying victory, his love and his loss.

Speaking of, yes as if they couldn't make this well rounded enough with dual wielding every gun AND the option to go completely stealthy, there's one of the best love stories I've ever seen in a game, let alone an fps. Even ignoring that relationship, the bonds you form with every member of the resistance are very memorable and each character grows throughout the story.

When I had finished the game, amidst my excitement and heartache, I discovered the hole in my heart this Wolfenstein: The New Order left me. I will be back to complete the other timeline, my 20 hours are not enough, yet now I cannot touch a single game. It is the feeling after you finish a really good book series, or movies, and you just savor the world that is gone from you now, a world you glimpsed into and shared a part of your soul with, a world that you carry with you long after it is done.

Get psyched.

999 mode: 999% more Action, 999 starting health, unlimited ammo, Uber difficulty

Walk in the Park: Hud is disabled (execpt prompts for ammo and interaction), more focus on your senses to survive, I AM DEATH INCARNATE! difficulty

Hardcore mode: Health and armor pickups removed from the game, Uber diffculty

Ironman mode: One life, game over if you die, Uber difficulty

A really large portion of the game's exploration I spent finding these enigma codes, so even if you don't plan on playing these modes I entirely recommend hunting down the codes and completing them in the extras menu. Great fun to be had, made the secrets feel like they meant something, as opposed to previous Wolfensteins.
