Because people actually have social lives and I can't just leave my PC on without a reason for 8 hours as I am outside.

If you're going to get a G2, why not get a Nexus 5 instead? It's about £100 cheaper, and it's essentially the same handset...

EDIT: I'm not saying that you're getting a Nexus 5, but it's just something I thought to point out.

Well, the G2 has a better screen and a hell of lot better battery, plus radio if you're into that sort of thing :)

Without going to look up benchmarks I'd say the best tablet is definitely going to be something from the Nexus or Galaxy lines, but at the moment there aren't any games I know of that require (are even really take advantage of) top end hardware. I've got an 8.9" Kindle Fire HD and it handles games with "console quality" 3D graphics just fine. Now if only any of those games were worth playing...

On second thought, get a Shield.

Benchmarks are crap anyway, especially Samsung (but pretty much almost every other manufacturer) have been caught manipulating benchmark scores.

Most of the games get on iOS first, many good games are ios exclusive and all of them should be compatible with that phone.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

exactly. and the reason simply is, that customers on ios actually buy stuff. many on android never buy anything. that makes ios very attractive for game publishers. if you want a big collection of good mobile games, ios is the way to go.

That myth has been debunked by multiple developers. Most of them make more money on Android than on iOS. Android cater to both the low and high-end market, and there is a smaller percentage of users willing to pay for stuff than on iOS. But with 80% of the market on Android and less than 15% on iOS, there are still more people willing to pay on Android than on iOS. Nowadays, developers who publish for iOS first (or only) are either lazy, just to set in their ways to get on with where the market really is or simply paid off to do so.

This is an interesting read from a developer's point of view

Isn't that about just 1 developer, 2 apps?
I think I found a more general comparison.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

that's not a myth. several developers quit android game developing, because they didn't make enough money. angry birds, one of the most successful mobile games of all time, is free on android and makes money with annoying ads, because the developers wouldn't make much money on android, if they asked for a small price as they do in iOS.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I'm aware of only one lazy crybaby who left Android and went back to iOS (Mika Mobile).

About Angry Birds, the app is free (with ads) with an option to buy the full thing to get rid of the ads. When the game was released, it was an experiment using ads because paid applications weren't available in all markets and they actually made more money from this than they did with iOS buyers. Later on, after people kept asking for an option to pay for the game instead of having in-game ads, they added the feature to purchase in game.

But there is another factor you need to count in: There is only 7-8 different iOS devices, and there is shitload of Android devices, so it's easier for devs to optimize the game for iOS.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

There's also a shitload of different PC, but that never stopped developers from making PC games. Although, the lazy developers go the console route just like they go iOS in the mobile world.

A few other developers I talked to actually find it harder to deal with the difference on different iPhone models than on Android devices. Android was designed from the get go to allow various screen resolutions and configurations. iOS has always been fixed hardware and feature set so it's up to the developer to do the leg work to support new screen resolutions and features. Plus, newer versions of iOS are made available on older devices but without the same feature set that's available on newer models, making it a pain to deal with anything new that may or may not be present on each iDevice.

i am a developer myself and have several (real-life) friends who develop for both platforms. even the android developers say, that it's easier to program in iOS. i don't who to whom you talked about that.

btw, i call it "easy", you call it "lazy". that really shows that you don't think about this topic open-minded. instead you have your opinion. you obviously don't like iDevices. and you will won't change your opinion even a bit, no matter what arguments we deliver.

one thing just doesn't make sense. on the one hand you call everybody who delevops for iOS lazy for choosing the easy route. on the other hand you try to explain that developing for android is actually easier. wtf? ^^

and regarding angry birds: the developers said in an interview, that they just cant make money on android, because so few people buy apps there. that's why they implemented ads instead. they said that themselves, you can't argue with that. i can only find a german version of the interview, so no point in posting a link here, i guess.

The situation is getting better. The last figure I remember reading is 2.5:1 profits for iOS:Android. Used to be 10:1 or worse.

Comment has been collapsed.

I haven't developed for iOS myself, only Android. (I do it for fun and don't get paid for it so the costs associated with iOS development is way too high just for some fun dabbling.) I'm going by what others have told me, including a friend who almost gave up on iOS because he felt it was a real pain in the ass compared to Android for his game development using Unity.

Doing something because it's easy, or because that's what you're used to, is lazy. It's true that I don't like iDevices much, for a growing number of reasons, but it's mostly that it irks me when I see misinformation being spread. I'm sure some things are easier done on iOS while others are easier to do on Android, what I mean when I say developers go the easy route is they develop for the platform they already know or the one they believe will be easier to develop for.

Regarding Angry Birds, I was going by an interview where Rovio had said it was because paid apps weren't yet available in a large number of markets that they decided to try an ad-supported version instead. Their market would have been too limited otherwise until payment options were made available globally. Especially since Android had just catched up to iOS in terms of market share back then.

Things have changed a lot in the last 3 years, and I'd love to see some hard numbers showing revenue from both platforms. (And not from an iOS-centric site like the link cams02 gave.) All I've seen so far are a few smaller developers that came forward saying that more money on iOS was a myth. Maybe they're isolated cases, but unless I see proof of the contrary, I'm inclined to believe them.

Plus most of them go free at some stage. So if you're not in a hurry you can get plenty of good games for no money.

Also, an iPhone with a dual core 1 Ghz processor usually runs much better than a more powerfull Android device.

Taking into account the cost, I would say one of the best phones you can get for gaming is the xperia SP. It's one of the cheapest ones (on terms of cost, not quality) that you can get with that CPU speed and GPU.

The Tegra Note is a tablet, with the Nvidia Tegra 4 in it. http://reviews.cnet.com/tablets/evga-tegra-note-7/4505-3126_7-35831314.html
As for a phone, pretty much anything with a Snapdragon 800. The fastest one with it is the Note 3, but for a much cheaper option is the Nexus 5.

You wont have much fun with a Snapdragon 800... because you wont have 2,3Ghz all the time. If you have bad luck, your phone will go down to 1 Ghz because of overheating.

Tablets/phones are not for gaming in any way, but if anyone for some strange reason would decide to use it for those odd reasons I would say a surface with windows 8 as it can run most windows games already.

However, you fill find very little games that are designed for a mobile device on the surface.

Mobile games/apps are not gaming. They are simply there to kill time while you're on the bathroom, they're more like flash based browser games than PC/console games. The creator of this post specifically asked for a tablet/phone for "gaming". I will keep assuming that he intends to use this device to play games such as Bioshock, Guild Wars 2, Counter Strike and so on, until he himself states otherwise.

Comment has been collapsed.

Gaming is playing games. Whether it's console, PC or mobile. Even the Facebook flash games is gaming, just casual gaming.

Trying to play games like Bioshock, CS, GW2 on a tablet is pointless. Those games aren't designed to be handled with a touch screen and will perform abysmally. There are quality games on mobile platforms, both casual and more hardcore titles. You just have to look through all the shovelware.

There are no tablets/phones meant for gaming. Obviously the most powerful ones are the best ones. So the best phone is probably LG G2 and the best tablet whatever is the most powerful tablet.
