I do a lot of digital painting and I have used Photoshop in the past. For various reasons I mostly use GIMP nowadays so I'm unfortunately not up to date on the latest versions of Photoshop. But I thought it worth mentioning that Photoshop CS 2 is still pretty good for 32 bit OSs and is basically now free (mostly as Adobe couldn't be bothered running the authentication servers anymore) - details here and various other places.

There are plenty of tutorials about but people use Photoshop for so many things they tend to be focused on one subject or another (digital painting, image manipulation, etc). I'm afraid I wouldn't know where to start advising you.

What do you want to do, classic "photoshop" that means edit photos ...in this case switch to an 64 bit OS on a Machine with enough ram....do yourself that favour. In picture editing it´s all about RAM. And if you can pay for Photoshop you can also upgrade your ram ;-)

Looking for old tutorials is really not the best way, I had to change my workflow from time to time, with more , more efficient functions (started with photoshop in the last century). If you have no one that could show it you directly, maybe try http://www.digitaltutors.com

if you don't need anything fancy like 3d tools you can use an old version like ps 7 or cs3 (ps7 was free a few years ago but they removed it from adobe's site).
