we all know that games won here must be activate on our own steam account but what will happen if i remove it forever from the support?
this may be a bug of the rules, if the action is regarded as not activating it and be banned from using this internet.
And about will i remove the game is that i don't want the booster park of that game and i have get the stage clear

You'll get 5 days off SG for every win you delete, you won't be able to enter SGTools giveaways, and they brand you like cattle. Okay, maybe not that last part - but it'll show up on SGTools checks.

ok also good to know.. I always thought that you get a random booster from one of your games.. because a friend of mine had a lot of borderlands booster packs since it was his only game and i never or hardly ever get booster packs for AAA Games and i guess i also have ~100 - 200 of them

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Who gets a booster is random (though chance is higher depending on level), but the game is the one for which someone completed a set. Sometimes you can even notice this for freshly bundled games (more cards for it, more badges and thus higher chance for receiving a booster).

Permalink

And what is the downside of receiving booster packs, that makes you want to change the SG rules?

Permalink

You know that dropping a booster for game A does not influence the chance of dropping a booster for game B in any way?

So after removing you will not get more boosters of other games, but the same as before and just less in total.

According to http://steamcommunity.com/tradingcards/faq/

Every time a badge for a game is craft, one out of all elegibal owners of that game gets a boosterpack.

Latly I have been arguing with some people if it is set to a fixed droprate, i.e. 1 per week or so, but so far I could not confirm that.

At least a while ago it was definetly not the case.

Sorry for going off-topic and possibly into personal stuff but you can always choose to ignore me :)
Are you actually diagnosed or is just something you feel like because I can relate if it's the latter. It would almost seem like everyone suffers from a mild case of OCD from time to time :P

Edit: Never mind my diagnosed question. I've googled a bit and it seems to be an uhm... rather useless diagnose anyway. I prefer the way it's used colloquially :)

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Just self diagnosed. (although I know that's something you're not supposed to do) I'm not going anywhere near psychologists and psychiatrists because I'm afraid they might find out my terrible secret ;)

Not the wash my hands every 5 minutes type of OCD but I still think some parts of my behaviour like the way I tidy and clean up my apartment (spending too much time on 1 thing while ignoring 3 others), removed game collecting, proof-reading my comments and correcting typos and also my fondness for SteamGifts are slightly obsessive.

But jokes aside... I'm actually a little intimidated my mental institutions although I know it would be highly unlikely for me to end up in one because I don't pose a threat to myself or others. And apparently I'm not the only one considering they make such great locations for Horror movies and Thrillers.

And I agree with you that most people seem to have some sort of obsessive behaviour one way or another. Further it seems such habits seem to be particularly common among gamers or maybe we're just more open about it / able to identify them easier.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

It's more something you've noticed and formed a theory about that will bias your perception to only count occurrences that confirms your theory. Like when people have something special happening to them they tend to note this thing but they are not accounting for all the non-special event that's more frequent.

There's an illustrative example in the book Your Deceptive Mind - A Scientific Guide to Critical Thinking. I'll try to recount it as best I can but I can really recommend listening to this book if you're at all interested in how our brains shapes or perceptions.

The situation is basically a couple in an argument about whether he puts the toilet ring down or leaves it up after a toilet visit. He claims that he always puts it down while she claims that he always leaves it up and the funny/surprising thing is that they're both right, to some extent.

These two seemingly contrary statements can easily be explained by confirmation bias as he only registers the times when he actually does remember to put the ring down and naturally forgets about the times he forgets to put it down. The fails are non-events to him and for her side of the story she only registers the times when he actually forgets to put the ring down, the rest are non-events to her.

I hope I didn't butcher the description too badly and that it's still understandable. It's very illustrative in the book :)

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

No, you explained it well. So basically people believe what they want to believe and they tend to remember things that support what they believed to begin with more.

Sounds quite interesting since I consider myself a student of human nature but when it comes to SteamGifts reading recommendations I have to read the cult leaders handbook How To Win Friends And Influence People by Dale Carnegie first.

By the way if you're into stuff like that I also highly recommend The Tipping Point: How Little Things Can Make a Big Difference by Malcolm Gladwell. It explains how social trends function very similarly to viruses.

No. Card progress is linked to your account, not to any owned licenses- this is why you can play a game during a free weekend, and then pick back up on your card farming and achievement progress when you obtain a full copy of the game, later on.

Deleting games from account will allow you to activate new licenses for that game, which can be useful for activating a different language or censorship version of a game. Past that, your status with that game isn't affected in any way ( and as one achievement-hungry SGer I know notes, this can be frustrating if you do want to reset achievements for a game [say, because you can't manage to get 100% on it and don't want it affecting your overall completion stats] ).

Honestly, I agree. It isn't fair. The rule is that the game needs to be activated on your account. Once that's been verified in a sync there is zero reason for the SG system to check for that game again, since the rule has already been followed. It would be trivial to just mark it as checked and activated and move on. The system would still work exactly the same, just less calls to steams API.

That being said the rule and system is what it is - if you delete a game you'll be marked as not having activated the game. if you don't like that I suggest you post a topic in the bugs and suggestions forum asking to change this. I estimate such a change should take approximately 1-2 eternities before it is implemented. Good luck!

Or we just rephrase the rule to say what it actually means which is:

Won games have to be activated and remain in the account used during registration.

Easy as that.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Sure, but why? The point of the rule is that people shouldn't be able to not activate games they won, and not be able to enter giveaways for them again. Both would be solved by storing a one bit value in the won giveaways table stating that the person has activated the game.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Sure. I would love to spend my money to give a game to somebody (hoping it will get played) just for them to delete it afterwards because they couldn't be bothered to research the game before entering. /s

Just plain no. Why should we pander to people who treat this site like a free Candy store for candy they do not intend to eat ?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

So it's better that it just goes unplayed? I play the games I win here and I research before entering - still at least one game I won has turned out to be totally unplayable for me and ended up in the category where I hide games I will never install or try again.

I mean that's just not a rational argument, because people who enter shit like that do it all the time as the rule is written, and would do it no more or less with any change.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

So it's better that it just goes unplayed?

It's pretty much the same but why should we make an effort and change the rules unnecessarily just to pander to people who can't even explain why the existance of said game bothers them ? It's a licence for a digital game. It doesn't take up space. It doesn't collect dust. The problem exists just in their heads.

Truth is the moment you start using this site you give up a certain tiny amount of control over your Steam Account.
If that is a problem for somebody I recommend them to simply not use this site.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I do agree that it's not an issue. Personally I just hide the games I end up not wanting to ever see again, most of them I purchased or got in part of bundles. Shit happens.

But if there's no rational argument against giving people this option then the fact that some people have an argument for it - no matter how flimsy - should be enough that it's worth considering.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

The fact that the community in general and giveaway creators in particular are firmly against it is argument enough for me to support the current solution.

Also on a less emotional note: Many games and almost all DLC are not recognized properly by Steam API.
Thus the only way to check if a game was activated at some point would be manually which is not possible due to the size of this community, so all wins have to remain in the Library of the winner so mods can look into it if something smells fishy.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Huh, I didn't think of that case. If someone deleted a game or DLC that wasn't detected by SG via the steam api then it would indeed be a problem for moderators checking into things since it couldn't be marked as "known to be received" automatically in the first place.

I can imagine a few workarounds for that, but you're probably right in that they'd be more work than it's worth for such a small gain. Here's to hoping steam fixes their API!

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Well as soon as you ask for a refund your account gets flagged and you have more trouble mining cards, which is what most people trying to cheat the system do. So that seems like a pretty minor problem. But if you think it's a big deal it's as easy as another row of coding... make sure the game is activated for at least two syncs 15 days apart.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

It still would be possible to cheat. Buy key for the game you won on some third site. Wait 2 weeks, revoke payment, key gets deleted, profit.
Why embrace options for bad people to do bad stuff, just because some don't want to see won games in their library anymore? Makes no sense at all.

So, for your own good, I would avoid removing any games from your account.

What do you mean ? If the game was region restricted and you could not activate it you should not mark it received. (but rather comment on the giveaway asking the creator to reroll or delete)

General rule of thumb: Only mark received after you have activated the game on your account.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Ofc I activated it, how else would I know it was a promo. It specifically said: US Alienware Promo, so generally, not being a USA resident, I could take part in that promo and get a key. Plus at that time it was forbidden to giveaway keys from such promos etc, AFAIK.

It may not seem like a big deal, but I've just had a restriction on my acc lifted (it was Steam Support mistake, but it took me a year to make them properly read my support request lol), so I was being especially carefull to avoid any potential problems.
