The entire DnD went into the way of a computer ARPG, where the players are constantly held by millions of safety nets so they always win any encounter. Remember when level 1 mages had 1 spell/day? In 4.5, they have 8.

Which is so weird, because that's the FUN part. My players just made it through an absolutely epic combat that no one (including me) was sure they could survive. Being on that razor edge is the sweet spot where all the "magic" happens.

I thought they were the same at first too.

Apparently Arcane is cultish magic whereas Divine magic is granted by god.

Arcane = Wizard/Sorcerer

Divine = Cleric/Druid

Arcane magic is learned through study and/or channeling personal energy. It has a wide variety of spells but incurs a penalty if cast while wearing armor (and no healing).

Divine magic is received via dedication to a deity, alignment, or force of nature. It incurs no armor penalty, but is more focused on healing and buffs/de-buffs.

Just ran an epic D&D session on Friday night, didn't finish until 6 AM.

Force of Nature is Divine, not arcane? Now I'm confused again. Divine magic for me then, we Trees already have power. Buy I'd still like to spite deities :p

While a wizard might choose to dedicate his life to the study of elemental magic, that power is derived through rote mastery (Intelligence).

A druid derives her power directly from nature itself. She hones her ability by elevating her mind to the heights of the forest (Wisdom).

I guess it's considered to be received as a result of dedication to pagan gods & goddesses. In the world outside of D&D, these would be like the ones that most cultures worshipped before the Judeo-Christian religions appropriated their festivals, such as the fertility goddesses celebrated at the Vernal Equinox (Easter) and the sun god honoured at the Winter Solstice/Yule/Saturnalia (Christmas).

When you say Arcane and Divine in the context of Wizards and Clerics, do you refer to them on the basis of D&D alone? There are several distinctions between Arcane and Divine in other media too iirc (Wizards vs Thalmor in Skyrim, Sauron/The Necromancer vs Elvenkind in Tolkienverse, and some of the Warhammer games as well)

The poll is subjective.

For me personally, D&D will always be king.

I see. Which D&D game would you recommend for a newb to play? I've never played a single game except a 3D phone version, and sufficce to say it was mediocre because of shit phone controls. I think I should like to start a D&D playthrough

I'd recommend leaving the video games alone, as nothing compares to the real thing!

I'm running a 3.5 campaign right now, but that's mostly because all of my books are 3.5. I do incorporate some of the newer things introduced in 4th and 5th edition such as skill challenges.

If you're completely new, just go with the current edition (5th). As a player, you only need the Player's Handbook. If you wish to DM, you will also need the Dungeon Master's Guide and a Monster Manual. It seems like they've smoothed out a lot of stuff with 5th ed. and made it very simple to pick up and go. Your local hobby shop should have some info on local groups if none of your friends are interested in playing. There are also some great free tools to play online now as well, but I haven't tried them personally because I really love having people physically playing around a table. I do listen to a podcast that plays over skype and it sounds just as fun (and certainly more convenient).

If you do wish to scratch the itch with a video game, you can never go wrong with Neverwinter stuff. Even the original Neverwinter Nights holds up well today. That said, once you actually play D&D tabletop style, you'll understand why it's "the best video game you've never played." When your possibilities are truly endless, it's an exciting thing to behold. IT'S MAGIC!

After reading your reply, I went and ordered myself every single book on D&D I could find including the Player Manual, Rulebook, starter pack something, the Dungeon Master guide and a couple more. Best 30$ I ever spent!

While I'm waiting for it to get shipped, how many optimal players do you think should be good for beginners? None of my friends have even heard of D&D. so it'll be me having to explain to them once I've fully read the rules myself!

Oh man, that's so great to hear! I am super pumped for you!

If I'm not mistaken, that starter pack comes with a pre-made adventure for beginners, so with your books you will probably be ready to go right out of the box. Traditionally, a party is 4-6 players not including the DM. However, you can have less or more; it's personal preference. For your first time, I would suggest at least two players and a DM, though I would shoot for 4 players. I have run "duets" in the past with just a DM and a player, these can be very fun but usually involve a little more work for the DM. Personally, I cap a playing party at 6 players. When there's more than that, i find it hard to keep session flow consistent. The current game I'm
DMing has 4 players.

I am truly excited for you! It's best to approach it all with an open mind and not be afraid to fail. Roleplaying a character takes some getting used to, and DMing definitely takes some time to get the hang of (it took me a long time to feel comfortable behind the screen). As you are the primary pusher behind playing D&D with your friends, don't be surprised if you end up pigeon-holed as the DM as well. I avoided this for the longest time, but now that I've finally given in, I feel right at home. But certainly let anyone try it out who wants to. An easy way to do this is a "one-shot," or a campaign that you only plan to let run for one session, so the new DM isn't intimidated. A one-shot is a great way to try out some ideas/mechanics, it's also a great alternative if you don't have all of your normal players.

Most importantly, just have FUN. Yes, there are lots of rules and stipulations, technicalities and balances. But, the ultimate rule is to have fun. The rules are there simply to quantify abstract actions into balanced math. But all that math be damned if no one is having fun. If your party is really into roleplaying, don't simply throw enemies at them every session. If they are new to D&D, you should probably lead with combat stuff and let the RP come over time. The whole game is a collaborative effort between the players and the Dungeon Master, and you are all there to have fun.

There is one catch. Don't be surprised if you spend all of your free time thinking about your next session!

Edit: oh yeah, and DICE! Most hobby shops have a bigass bucket filled with dice for a quarter each, always fun. Feel free to ask me anything about the game-- I'm always in the mood to talk D&D. And let us know how your first session goes!

As a beginner you could try joining up a party first to see what's what, here's the recommended reddit to find peeps. This is the most popular online tool used by people, although it's better to find a group first and then see what they're using \o/
Just tell your friends it's a game of pretend, don't bother with being overly strict with rules and stuff, because you might want to move on to a different rule-set depending on your player preferences, there's like classic D&D (with a few different editions), Pathfinder, Warhammer, Star Wars, LoTR etc. For the first few games don't worry about being the perfect rule enforcer, just try to make sure everyone is having fun with their characters and the world you put them in. Since you want to play with RL friends that will make your job a lot easier, you already hopefully know what they might like, will it be a dragon 🐉 they face or will they TPK 🎲 at the hands of a small group of random goblins 👺 Involve them in the world, the best games will happen when you went in with a plan to do X, Y, Z but your players or a specific troublemaker player decided to just go the other way or look in that secret crevice that you never even thought about, improv will make the games more enjoyable for you and them! Make sure there's plenty of snacks to go around, everyone has time to chill and most importantly ALL PHONES MUST BE PUT ON SILENT OR VIBRATE 😾
