That's your only way.
They are not very helpful most of the time, you can't be sure they will accept to restore the gift, still it doesn't hurt to try.

I think you CAN'T add it in the inventory if it was gifted by email.
That''s why there is a 1 month after purchase rule. Scammers would just do so instead of trading between accounts.
Try asking steam support for help, they MAY help, but probably will not.
...or try asking for refund, maybe that works.

Well If thats true then steam is just stupid, it basically forces someone to send a game gift to another by email because he already owns it then it forces the owner of the game to add the game gift recieved by email to his library. Thanks for the advice though, I will try asking steam support or asking for a refund.

its unlikely you will receive a personal refund for a game you diddn't buy, they will most likely refund the original gifter then or restore it in your inventory/gifters inventory, however be polite and they will help, if it doesn't work the first time wait 24h and make a new ticket. it worked once for me.

The recipient has to check a box that says "yes, the original gifter can refund this gift," and then the sender is able to refund. That's how it worked for me :)

You can GIFT, you can't TRADE the game before the 1 month timer ends.

Every gift I've ever received by email has given me the choice of adding it to my library or my inventory. P

About two weeks ago I added three gifts that were sent to me by e-mail to my inventory. I bought a Skullgirls 4-pack for my housemate and then he sent the extra three copies back to me by e-mail so I could do a giveaway for them. We did it to get around the 1 month after purchase rule. He sent them by e-mail as he couldn't gift them over Steam due to me already owning Skullgirls (which is why I didn't just break the 4-pack myself).

I know that it is possible to receive a gift by e-mail and add it to your inventory. I'm afraid I have no idea what went wrong in your case.
If you haven't already I'd maybe suggest getting your friend to look at his gift history and see if that offers any insight into what happened to the game. But I think this is probably one for Steam support.

I can only say for sure what happened to me - but it would appear you were mistaken. I certainly do hope Mahmoud gets his gift!

Well the thing is that I never recieved this message, this message was supposed to appear to me but instead I got a stupid an error has occured message and when I clicked on the link again in the email to reactivate this message, the game was directly added to my library even though I own it.

Yeah I know, What makes it even weirder is that I aslo recieved a game gift of left 4 dead 2 by email and I had it in my library and when I tried to click the link in the email, the game wasn't added to my library and I could easily added it to inventory, it only happened with hot line maimi

Are you sure it was activated ? Did your friend check if it was gone from their inventory ?

If it was purchased/obtained through a non-Steam site, you'll have to contact that site and ask them to invalidate the purchase. Once they do that, the key should become usable again, that's how it worked for me.
Steam won't do anything at all if it was from another retailer.
I mean, in an official sense. In an unofficial sense, Steam won't do anything ever, no matter the circumstances.

does it show twice when you right click on the game > DLC? http://i.imgur.com/s2f8Z2H.jpg
does your friend activity show you got the game recently? http://i.imgur.com/Vgb1sez.jpg
go to your account details (top-right drop-down menu) and check if there's a duplicated game there: http://i.imgur.com/Ox1TncM.jpg
also, is the game listed in your friend's inventory > gift history? http://i.imgur.com/MLKB9np.jpg

Well I have checked everything and the game is nowhere to be seen, it doesn't show twice when I right click on the game and it doesn't appear in friend activity nor in the account settings nor in the gift history. The thing is that gifts sent by email never appear in the gift history because the other steam email gift that I got it in my inventory doesn't show either in the gift history, I don't know about the rest though.

Gifts that you have received don't show up in your gift history. Only gifts that you have sent. It isn't anything to do with e-mail.

And I hate to say it, but if it doesn't show up in your 'account details' or anywhere else then it may be that your friend sent the gift elsewhere before you redeemed it...

Ok, thanks for info, it is okay. I didn't really need the game gift because I didn't trade anything for it, one of my friends just offered it to me without anything in return and he must have forgotten that he had sent it elsewhere before. I just made this thread because I thought the whole thing was a bug and thought of reporting it, thats all.

I know a while back someone won one of my giveaways and I sent it to the e-mail address he had listed on this site, but that e-mail wasn't valid any more. He added me on Steam and explained this and I was able to regift it elsewhere very easily.
After everything you have said it really does sound like that might have been what has happened to you. I think it is more likely that the gift was redeemed elsewhere than that you were somehow able to add the game to your library twice without any record.

Ok, so basically a friend of mine had sent me a gift of hotline miami by email because I already own the game and then I went to the email to recieve the gift and add it to my inventory but when I clicked on the link and signed in, the game was automatically added to my library even though I own it and there is no way I can add it now to my inventory, should I contact steam support about this?
