Hello!

Yesterday, I wrote a post about the problem my mother had with Win10, and now… it's my turn :(

When I upgraded my OS to Win10, the system was nicely; the start menu button and cortana worked properly and everything was wonderful. However, after a reboot (not exactly a reboot, I put the PC in "sleep" mode) the start button and cortana said "Goodbye and thanks for all the fish", and I'm doomed with a ridiculously limited OS. I can access to the software in the desktop or searching it in the folders, but this is a nightmare.

EDIT: I tried restoring the OS back to Windows 7, but the computer just said "Ok" and restarted, again in Windows 10!

So, I have a few questions, and as you were so kind in my last post, I'm asking here again. Thanks in advance!

  1. Is there any fix to the start button and cortana trouble?

    • I've tried a few solutions I found in the net, but none of them worked.
    • I can't create a new user account, or edit mine. Don't know why.
  2. Can I return to my previous OS (Windows 7)? I know I should, but I don't know how can make it without the Start Button.

    • I tried restoring the OS back to Windows 7, but the computer just said "Ok" and restarted, again in Windows 10. Why? :(
  3. Can I, maybe, force the OS to looking for a upgrade?

Maybe I'm forgetting something; in that case I'll update the post later. Thanks!

Sorry to hear you're having issues, the folks over at https://www.reddit.com/r/Windows10/ are super helpful and possibly better equipped to help you out! Someone over there may have a fix or suggestion, and there may be other people with the same issue. Good luck!

You sound like a legitimate support staff. That or you just have really good people skills.

My search function was a bit wonky (working, not working) so when it worked I just looked up the update center and indeed used the restore Win 7 option.

How? Did you use the "restore to Win 7" option? In that case, how can I use it without using the start button in order to find it?

You can try to kill explorer in the task manager and then restart explorer, that way I got my start menu to work one time.

You can reach the setting in My computer - in the upper row Computer - and here is the setting menu button

Win-Button + E, Info-Center... a lot of ways

the sad thing is: after all those years, ppl still aren't able to use windows

Nice! I didn't knew about that also, though I doubt that would have worked either. When I tried Win10 the windows button didn't work, neither was I able to use any of the icons in the app tray.

I had the same problem within a VM, I reset Win10 via settings menu and the problem was solved. There are 2 possible reset options, clean re-install and reset while keeping your installed programs

Oops, I'm not lucky at all. I tried restoring the OS back to Windows 7, but the computer just said "Ok" and restarted, again in Windows 10. Don't know why, but I hate Microsoft (today even more than yesterday!). What can I do now? Restoring deleting all my stuff?

Do you have the previous installation still on your disk? Because if you cleanup C and checked to delete the previous windows installation you can't rollback

Don't know, where can I check it?

That means you seem not to know this feature, which is actually good, so there might be a flaw/bug inside windows 10.
I guess somewhere on the windows forums there will be other ppl who have this problem too. :)

Try uninstalling previous updates. I had a similar bug with Cortana few days ago, I couldn't search in Start Menu neither to open Cortana. I tried that and it works fine later.

Where can I uninstall them?

In Start Menu, press in Settings, and then in Updates and security. Later press Advanced settings, and look Update history. Here you can uninstall any update. Probably you will need to restart your PC.

It's not letting you revert back to the previous os you had?

Really? So the revert back to windows 8/7 process isn't working for you? Did you try calling support?

Yeah, it isn't working :( I didn't call support, I've been trying to solve it myself.

Ok I see that there's two recoveries, maybe one of them isn't working for you but the other might
One is reached by right clicking the start menu, going to control panel, then there's an option for backing up and restoring windows 7
The other option is by right clicking the desktop and going to personalize, from there click the settings icon in the left hand corner, then go to update and recovery and from there go to recovery.
I am not sure which you've done or if they are both the same thing but I'm just trying to give you some options, hopefully you get the problem solved, keep the thread updated.

Thanks! In the first choice, control panel, I have no option to restore Win10. "Windows can't find a backup copy in this computer" (I'm translating from spanish) :(

Try Classic Shell, maybe playing with the Start Menu settings you can restore the original Start Menu, or at least you can use a Windows 7 style menu.

Oh man, this software works! I mean, at least I CAN HAVE a Start Menu, not the official but it's much more than nothing. It didn't reactivated the original menu, but I'll work with it for the moment. THANKS. However, I'll keep looking for a solution.

If you copy is activated and the key is tied to your account so you can just do a fresh install and log in with your account,i am not sure why you would want to roll back to 7 to just install 10 again so try this..

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10

Download that and due a fresh install when it ask for a key just skip it and when you login with your account you used to update it should activate it since the key is tied to your account. After you do a fresh install and everything works out then make sure to make a reset point before installing or adding anything in case something goes a miss then you should be able to reset windows OS within windows.I would still keep a backup of the OS on dvd or usb just in case.

Just keep this in mid...
If you reset your PC within a month of your upgrade to Windows 10, the option in Settings that lets you go back to your previous version of Windows will no longer be available.

Though at this point i think you might be kinda sol unless you can find out what is causing all the issues.
I do not think going into sleep mode caused those issues i never had that happen just boot issues in general so i just turned off all sleep and fast start up option and no more issue.

Anyhow it took me a bit to type this so i hope this has helped some i am sorry i had no real answers for your general problem but everyone suggested what i would have.

Hi! Sorry for the late response.

Yes, I guess I did something who disabled my "return-to-win7" option. So I'm fettered to Win 10, my enemy. I remember I tried to return to a no-so-old restauration point, and maybe this was my mistake and for that reason I can't return to W7. I guess.

If I do a fresh installation, will I lose all my info?

Thanks!

It is best to back it up just to be safe,as i think if you do a clean install it will put main files in your current installation into a windows.old folder. But just just in case things go a miss it better to backup things you can not lose.

Though if your meaning like apps and stuff you will need to re-install them, games on steam should be fine if you back up the folder. Also do not forget game saves and such and the app data folder

I would save anything you do not wish to lose just in case.If your windows is activated and you made an account then your info for the OS should be saved to it meaning the key.

I hope i understood what you mean by info
