That depends on if he is giving away a beta key or a retail key. Right now the game is in open beta for 2 weeks which means anyone can play the game for free for those 2 weeks and then when it ends everyone will lose their game. They do not get to keep the free version past the 2 week period. If he is giving away a retail key, then that should be fine.
