Apparently there's a yearly giveaway train and there's no way I wasn't going to join!
I'm just gonna ramble here, feel free to skip it. Sorry for any typos, it's probably my keyboard fucking up.

So for the last two or so weeks the game that captured my attention is Hollow Knight. I've had in my library almost since launc and I gave it several tries over the years, but something always went wrong, so much so that Hollow night became kind of my "unicorn".
The 1st playthrough went great (albeit incredibly slow compared to the latest one) but then my keyboard broke (from cleaning I swear) and I had to get a new one, and for some reason it had issues with the game.
My 2nd playthrough ended because of JoyCon drift™.
In the 3rd playthrough I got frustrated because I lost all of my geo (still hate that mechanic) and decided to take a break that became a very long one.
And finally, my th attempt failed simply because I really needed a break from gaming at the time.
I didn't know if I'd ever give the game another try. And then, over two weeks ago, I opened Reddit. Silksong is coming out in... TWO WEEKS?!
I knew I had to give the game one final attempt. aybe this time it will click with me. And boy howdy did it. I've played nothing else those two weeks, finishing the game hours before Silksong launched. More than 40 hours long playthrough. I even did some of the extra challenges at the end of the game (not all of them though, I have limits). ames rarely capture my attention that fiercely. But Hollow Knight really did, and I'm really glad I gave it another try.

That's it. Boring story over. Move on to the next giveaway already!

The same thing happened to me with Hollow Knight lol.

I was sick during the first playthrough, put it on hold, then forgot where I was. Second playthrough, I had a lot going on then and got frustrated when I got killed in a room and needed to walk back to the room each time to pick up the "coins."

I will try playing it again soon.

I actually wrote a paper on accessibility in Metroidvania games for my Game Design course. lol. (I built a demo for one for my end of year project) The paper was sparked by playing and failing at Hollow Knight due to my own limitations when I was going through illness. I do see that the new one has a "save anywhere" feature and a feature to help those who are not good with timed events. That's brilliant. That's going to open the game up to more people.

Hope you're well!
Is the paper publicly available?

I'm doing a lot better. Thanks for asking!

The paper isn’t publicly available. it was part of a one-year Level 8 course (honours BSc. level), so it would have stayed within the course rather than being published. (They did ask me to continue it as a PhD and I declined for now lol)

After my illness, I decided to take that course to get myself back out there. It was really hard because it's like squashing the important parts of a 4 year BSc into 1 year, but so much fun too. =)

Not so far. Really, I've just been learning and fleshing out that game demo.

I came in from a graphic design background, not a coding background, so I do have a lot to learn still, code-wise. But I really love it. Kinda wish that I went into computer science from the get-go.

Thanks for sharing! I've never tried Hollow Knight but I've had a few cases where I had to try a game quite a few times before it clicked, but once it did, it was absolutely incredible and I wondered how I missed it the first few times. It's funny how that works!

Right?? It's not just the game or even the player, it's the circumstance. I'm itching to try and continuing other games right now but I'm not sure any would fit right now. Next time, definitely.

EDIT: Sorry, had to fix some typos. This damn keyboard...

Amazing you managed to do so many attempts! Hope you enjoy Silksong too
.
Wasn't with Hollow knight for me, but if I give a game 2-3 attempts, I wouldn't be able to keep trying, too stressful for me. Sometimes I can't give them second attempt after abandoning unfinished save file for years

Yeah, I have a category on steam with more than a few of those. "I'll definitely continue this one soon!" last played: 2018. Hollow knight was the king among this group for me, and If not for the Silksong hype I don't know when or even if I would give Hollow Knight another go. Now that I finished that the new king is... Tears of the Kingdom. Soon™

Never played it myself, but won it on SG. I'm thinking of getting my first controller this year. After which I will address all my SG wins that deserve a control experience! Yakuza, Uncharted, and games like Hollow knight! You seem to have had quite the experience, hope to beat it on my 1st try

Glad you enjoyed it, I managed to get pretty far on Hollow Knight ages ago, but, couldn't finish the last few hidden challenges, still I'm glad I played it.

Ugh... I had also put down Hollow Knight for several years, and then did a playthrough a few months ago, anticipating a Silksong announce. Geo is a scam. Don't worry about it.

Silksong, I'm about 40 hours in and for me that equates to late late act 1 -- I think the only things I have left in act 1 are the two regions that are most-avoided by players and the boss with the runback. I think. god knows. I keep changing my objective or doing some unhelpful sidequest and attempting one of the same three things and.... dying. I will beat this game while I still have game pass. I will.

JoyCon drift™

Ha ha. I have nothing else to add as I haven't played the game, but that part definitely amused me. Story status: Boring=REVOKED.

My first playthrough of Death Stranding was blocked by LCD Failure (cheap acer nitro laptop, made even cheaper by being used). Ended up being the most expensive game I've ever played as I decided to buy a new, quality gamer laptop so I could keep going** AND THEN.... Lost interest after another 10 hours. Sigh. But finally got back into it almost 2 years later and really loved it.

** of course other games motivated the purchase too, but for the sake of the story let's ignore that.
