Your last suggestion reminds me of the 1993 mini-TV-series "Wild Palms" with James Belushi.
To be honest, I never thought about creating a cult - at least not in depth. Maybe something about merging science and religion ? Or maybe something about metaphorical werewolves and the struggle between having to stay in control for social reasons and letting your inner wild side run free to keep your sanity.
