Description

Hello Everyone,

So I'm giving away games to raise awareness of a charity I'm starting (don't worry, I'm not asking for/accepting any donations). I run a company that sells an enterprise computer security solution, but now I'd like to give back by making it available for free for home use.

I think the free technology is a perfect fit for gamers. It runs in the background without any UI/popups to pull you out of a game. It won't impact system performance (back when I had more free time, I played a lot of competitive multiplayer games and hated AV products that impacted my games). And frankly as a demographic I think we engage in some, let's say, riskier surfing behaviors that make it especially necessary to have something better than AV.

You can learn more about my security offering, Solidus, and download it at http://GetSolid.us. Feel free to message me here with any questions you might have (Tech-wise, about my credentials, etc).

I'm also planning to do some non-bundled giveaways for users of the technology to increase adoption and further encourage users to spread the word. I'd really love to see this charity make as much of a difference and protect as many people as possible. Let me know if you install the product (honor policy), and I will add you to a whitelist for those future giveaways.

Thanks for reading, and I hope you take advantage of the free security offering.

Thank you for the giveaway, and I wish you luck in your endeavor.

That being said - and please don't take this the wrong way, but - how do we know what you're offering is not itself malware/spyware? Are there any third-party analyses to review? I don't mind giving support, but I like to be cautious about things like this.

From your FAQ:

I would advise against downloading software from unknown sources (that includes me). So you shouldn’t install Solidus unless you know me or know someone who knows me. But since I doubt you randomly found this site, you likely fit that description.

Well, I don't really know you, so that doesn't really fit.

Also, I googled Solidus before even going to your page (found nothing helpful on a cursory search, which is fine if you're new). In that search, I found the Wikipedia entry for solidus on my own, but the LMGTFY process seems kind of insulting insulting (maybe I'm being overly sensitive?) and defeats the purpose of the FAQ.

Thank you very much for the reply and feedback.

I completely understand skepticism around downloading and installing from someone/a website you don't know. I think it is an absolutely reasonable decision to err on the side of caution and avoid downloading for now.

I am setting up collaborations with a few universities and hope to have a few assessments/endorsements from them to make it an easier decision for people who are interested but understandably cautious. But I am still early in the process and figured there is value in trying to protect people sooner than later rather than waiting. For the moment, the best I can offer is the credentials (you may or may not have seen my LinkedIn link on the website). I figure transparency is the best way to help put people at ease (after all most malware developers/hackers are not forthcoming with their identities). Ultimately, I am putting my reputation in the industry on the line in an attempt to do some good.

As for the LMGTFY, it's not meant to be offensive. It's specifically in regard to the word solidus (not the security offering). But I'm sorry if you were insulted. It wasn't the intention.

Thanks again for taking the time to take a look and give valuable feedback.
