Description

Welcome to the tenth week of the 52 weeks of Christmas!!!

What is the 52 weeks of Christmas you might ask? Well it is an idea I had where I will be gifting a new game every week for 52 weeks(that's a whole year!!!) and hopefully making someone's week feel like Christmas in the process. I hope you will have as much fun as I do with this.

New Week, New Question: What's your stand on indie games? Do you like them or hate them? Do you find anything original about them or are they just a waste of time? Are they games you would normally go out of your way to buy? Do you support them? In that same sense, do you think that greenlight is a good idea?

Thank you Sword~ for the question.

Response: I think i need to start by defining what I consider an indie game, every game that does not have a publisher no matter how big or small the team and budget is is an indie game in my book. From that I will say that they are hit and miss for me. I find indies that are centered around a mechanic and that are well made to be really fun. Overall I think that indie devs are more willing to bring something new and interesting and I like it. I don't go out of my way to buy them however, only the ones I am interested about. For example I have no interest in The binding of Isaac which everyone says is a great game. Most of the indie games I own are from bundles such as IndieGala and HumbeBundle. When I purchase from those sources, I try to pay as much as I can at the time of the purchase. I haven't really poked around with greenlight but I like the concept. Some devs really do not have the pull to get their game on steam and letting the community decide seems like how the store should work; the customer decides what they want on the store. Giana Sisters for example is a greenlighted game and it is awesome.

You can join my Steam group where you will be alerted of all my giveaways, participate from time to time in choosing my next giveaway and even chose which game related question to ask. Thanks :) A discussion thread will also be open with this question and the old one if you want to discuss it with me or others :)

Hey xamon,

You sure you wanted to create 2? And most importantly are you sure you wanted to make even one of Homefront?

I'll respond to the question in the coming days.

I just really really hate it and THQ because of it. Please ignore my prejudice. I get rude whenever this game is brought up.

Indie has been the new buzzword for the last few years. Remember a while back when EA were trying to make indie games? Yes, that happened. Some people throw the word around too easily, mistaking one for the other. There are games with publishers that look indie like Bastion, or Shank. Then there are games that don't look indie, but still are, like Worms, Ravaged, Section 8. Did you know that Serious Sam is indie? Indie is not something new. A game should be called indie if it has no financial support from a publisher.

The term indie should only be used to indicate the way the game was funded and is in no way indicative of the final game. In this respect, I treat indies like any other in term of how I view them. I'll like a game if it's good, not judging by how it was funded. Don't judge a book by its cover. Not having a publisher has its perks though. It's no secret that most indie games try something new or different because no one orders them to make the next big thing and the developers trust in their own abilities.

What I do see differently is my purchase decision. This is due to all of the bundles. I have bought some games only to see them later in bundles. I bought Amnesia a year ago. If I would have waited a month, I would have gotten it at half that price. I still haven't played it. I bought it again in the HiB. I don't see the point of buying them if they will be in a bundle later down the line. My backlog is already too big.

Greenlight is a good idea, executed badly. There was that thread on the forum about visual novels being allowed on steam, there was a submission to greenlight for an X-rated game that was immediately pulled. The point of greenlight was to put the power in the hands of the users, and open up the system. It doesn't seem that was very true. I also don't know by what standard a game gets to go to greenlight and what just gets put directly on the store. A Monopoly game was released a few days ago and it looks very unprofessional. Why didn't that go through greenlight? Why do big publishers have their way and skip it? It seems fair that they shouldn't be above the 'law'.

Thanks xamon, but I really don't want aids.

lol its Spec Ops the line.

True I bought Rochard and the day after the HIB came out with Rochard in it. It really makes you think twice before buying an indie game.
Like I said in my response I barely used greenlight so I don't really know how it works and cant really comment on it. Thanks for the answer

Homefront is the aids. I understood it was Spec Ops and I really want it.

I bought HiB 5 only for Bastion. I had some of the other games and wasn't interested in the rest.

I love Indies and I play a lot of them.
I think that Greenlight is awful, though. It's a lazy decision on Valve's part. It makes idiots pick games, rather than someone who knows what people will actually enjoy playing. It makes a lot of devs prostitute themselves in all the wrong ways to get votes. Because of its mode of presentation to potential voters it also strongly favors good looking games over original, substantial ones.
It is plain bad for the market. I hate it.

I don't really like indie games to be honest, with the exception of a few like Bastion.

Most indie is garbage, all this 'retro' crap, but there are some real gems in there too. I don't like buying them on release because they're usually buggy/not worth the price. </2cents>
