I've played so many characters that it would take days to type that all up. :)

I'm always a DM... But I can pick an NPC, why not? :-)

Joel, 36 years, human male, lowborn. Born in a middle-east-ish (maybe a bit more to the north) area.

In his twenties, Joel fell in love with Avaÿn, a young woman from a noble house; she loved him, but her father exiled him under penalty of death. Joel became bitter and went to Yothor, to study among the Puppeteers (equivalent to necromancers).

Around the age of 33, when he was an initiate of the 3rd Circle of Darkness (a low to mid Puppeteer level), he learned that in Avaÿn's city, wakeplague appeared (a slow, uncurable, deadly contagious disease that makes its victims more and more tired, until they can do nothing but sleep; it doesn't kill directly -- the victims die of thirst or hunger in their sleep, or when their tongue rolls back and they choke).

Because of their pact with Death and the Onyx Heart (a mysterious rough onyx boulder at the center of their temple), Puppeteers are immune to diseases, so Joel decided to break their law, desert them and help Avaÿn. Initiates of the 3rd circle or lower, however, can only animate puppets when touching the Heart, so Joel secretly underwent the severing ritual -- touching the Onyx Heart with one palm, and his own with the other, saying "I'm yours". As he wasn't a proper 4th-circle initiate, he had never been told what the ritual costs, and never knew what the sharp pain he had felt at that moment meant.

When he reached Avaÿn's city, he found its inhabitants dead or dying. He found Avaÿn, who was already able to spend only minutes awake each day, and was on the brink of death. Joel took care of her, his immunity allowing him to feed her. He animated some of the dead, and with the puppets' help to tow the wagon with Avaÿn and provisions, he left his birthplace, determied to take care of her, and find a cure. His puppets protect them, watch over Avaÿn when he is asleep or away, help gather food and firewood…

He lives in caves or in deserted places now, away from people, but still near. His skills as a Puppeteer are difficult to sell while staying undercover (people would kill Avaÿn if they knew how close to their cities wakeplage has been brought), so the employment is on the shady side. Driving settlers out of their new village with skeleton incursions, that sort of thing. But mandrake roots, and other substances to try against the disease, are expensive.

Joel is gruff and humorless, endlessly devoted to protecting Avaÿn's life, alignment-wise somewhere around Neutral. He's gentle and doesn't like to hurt anyone he doesn't have to, but when being tracked, had no qualms about killing his horse, puppeting it and sending it away to create false tracks (a living horse wouldn't be able to do such a complicated thing on its own, only a mind-controlled puppet).

So when you discover that someone has been robbing graves in your village, taking not the treasures, but the bodies… when you feel like you are being spied upon by a strangely still pigeon with a dead look and a needle sticking out of its forehead… when you find out that the ancient mudslide in one of the nearby caves has been cleared, and there is a deep impression in the ground in the shape of a huge, mummified, ancient cave bear whose body is nowhere to be seen… when you hear a strangely tender, yet gruff voice coming from a small fissure in the ground, singing an echoing love song to a sleeping woman… maybe don't go looking too deep into those caves.

I played it since it was called 'Blackmoore' before the White Box was released. Single campaign for over 3 decades ran by my friend Dave Arneson. The year after we started playing he showed the game to Gary Gygax at GenCon because we used some of his 'Chainmail' rules. Then after some more development the game was called Dungeons and Dragons.

Characters many. I won the ADD Open many times. Sorry to say even in college I knew the rules to the game better then what i was suppose to be studying. :) I had some real long back stories for some of my characters but I can not find my logs. I stopped playing when Dave passed. May he R.I.P.

Thank you for the giveaway.

Yep, been playing D&D on a semi-regular basis since early 2000's.

My girlfriend is currently DM'ing The Curse of Strahd for us, but our sessions have been suspended for a while because of covid pandemic.
My current character is a half-orc bard chef (College of Swords, dual wielding butcher knives) named Garnir Five-Spices ("Garnir" is russian for "side dish" and Five-Spices is a reference to chinese five-spice powder).
