Still better than CoD.

Is it really though? CoD gets a lot of shit from people, but the games still have solid gameplay, even if it's pretty stale at this point. This game really doesn't.

I've played this back on PS3, where I also played a run of CoD games. They both have solid gameplay. Really, DNF works just fine. As far as modern shooters at the time of its release, it was probably the most enjoyable one I had played because of the Duke charm. I guess if you're not into that then it's going to be as dull as most other modern first person shooters, but it sold me. And most people hated on it because all the kids getting it probably didn't have a clue who Duke Nukem was as he hasn't been in a widely popular game since Duke Nukem 3D. The box didn't say Call of Duty, Battlefield, or Halo on it so why would the demographic care? Though I'd certainly rather it be more like a classic FPS than a modern one, and that's kind've the main problem. It tried to compromise on modern and classic FPS concepts, which are generally contradictory. So it ended up not only displeasing fans of the modern stuff due to zero name recognition, but it also fell flat with the classic FPS crowd. It gets way more hate than it deserves, honestly. The critics took a dump on it because they either didn't recognize the IP enough to bother doing the game justice, or were expecting it to be way better than it was and were just wallowing in disappointment. But hey, maybe that's just me. It's an average game with some charm and a nice tribute to the character. That being said, I also don't hate Call of Duty games, but DNF has more personality for sure, and it also has a better campaign than any of the CoD games I played. Sorry for the paragraph. Guess I'm just a little defensive because, much like the hate for Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts, it feels like people are more upset about everything AROUND the game rather than the game itself. Just my two cents.

Back in my Xbox days, I remember looking forward to it. Then I tried the demo and told my friends that it's not very good and that they may want to consider cancelling their preorders. They laughed in my face, saying pretty much what you said. It comes out, is critically panned, all my friends hate it. They did not care about it not being CoD or Halo. I didn't care about that either. They weren't looking for a CoD or Halo. They just thought it was a bad game, just like I did.

I've taken a couple of years off of FPS games. Maybe I would enjoy it more now than I did back then.

Also, I have never liked CoD games outside of their campaigns, and considering how short the campaigns are nowadays, there isn't much good I can say about them either. But I can at least say that I enjoyed playing them. This cannot be said for DNF.

I mean, if you didn't enjoy it then you didn't enjoy it. That's fair. Different opinions. I still think it's a large exaggeration to call DNF bad, though. It's an average game with some extra charm. I certainly wouldn't call it game of the year or pay 60 bucks for it, but I'd sooner go back and play DNF than I would any CoD campaign I played. Though I think there's some potential in the zombie mode and the spec ops missions in MW2 were super fun. Honestly, if the whole game were a bunch of those kind of missions it would've been pretty sweet. But there are so many FPS games out there that you might as well look for one you really like rather than settling. That's for sure. If you don't care about the character, then there's very little in the game that hasn't been done better before.

From what I've seen, Duke doesn't seem to have much character in this game. It just feels like he's trying to be what he was in Duke 3D but is failing.

But yeah, I'm a little disappointed that you weren't the winner of this giveaway. You seem to be one of the few people that genuinely wanted it.

I feel like he does just as good of a job, personally. Though while I like the whole tribute aspect of the game's universe, I do find it a bit less badass than when he was just an action hero dude on his own personal mission. To be fair about it, he's a fairly two dimensional character to begin with, just sporting a bunch of (mostly lifted) one-liners and doing action movie hero stuff. But the actor really sells it for me.

I did! It's one of the few things I miss from my PS3. Though I miss 3D Dot Game Heroes the most. My computer isn't that great so I wasn't going to spend 20 bucks on it to have it possibly not work. So I figured if I won it for free from someone who doesn't want it then I could have the game back and not be out anything. And also maybe play it in the future once this thing craps out on me and I get a new machine. But don't feel bad because a LOT of people have been giving it away and I did win one :D
