The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Special Edition

Ooh, I never even thought about playing an Argonian for that playstyle! (I come from a D&D background and am still a bit confused about the different races in the Elder Scrolls universe.)

Breathing under water give you many options to fast travel by rivers or to get hidden loot without the need of a late game item that would give you water breathing or spamming a spell every 60 seconds :)

Also the bonus to lockpicking, sneaking, pickpocketing and light armor makes them a great rogue from the start.

And their racials are 50% resist disease and ability to regenerate fast to heal.

They also get bonus to restoration magic so you can heal yourself even more and to alteration magic so you can create immobilizing traps for enemies to change iron into silver and silver into gold or create light so you don't need torches to see or to buff your armor to the point of ignoring 80% of physical damage, also detect enemies in the area or paralyze the enemy etc.

I think they are the best for a rogue/ranger playstyle. I also think they are the best race in Skyrim :)

I think their racials can fit any playstyle and will work for any build while other races have racials more focused on 1 thing like orcs and melee fighting or Altmer and spellcasting or Bretons and magical damage tanking.

I also come form D&D background ;)

I tell you, I was completely boggled by the playable races until I read your note. (And, well, I had completely overlooked the non-damage uses of spells, too!)

I'd give you another blue heart if only cg would implement that ability. :)

Destruction magic is nice for dmg but most of the time you can't be far from the enemy and after the spell hit all enemies will know where you are while with bow you can just sneak around and do sneak attack + crit damage with a bow to one shot most enemies but also remain undetected :)

And Restoration spells heal you if you get into trouble and alteration spells give you traps and paralyze to stop enemies chasing you if you are in trouble or to paralyze them and kill them before they can harm you plus many useful spells in everyday adventuring plus a way to ignore 80% of physical damage be it enemy sword or bow or anything.

Also Restoration skills tree makes your magicka regenerate faster and makes your healing spells restore more hp and also stamina and if you ever got hit and go below 10% HP once a day you will be healed for free for 250 hp.

Alteration skills tree makes you block 30% of magic cast on you by enemies so you get damage less by enemy magic and also 30% chance to completely absorb enemy spell that makes you get 0dmg

Alteration + Restoration makes you really really really hard to kill and bow + sneak makes you kill enemies really fast and from a great safe distance. And you also have all the useful spells for everyday adventuring :)

You should also focus on Speech skill to be able to sell everything everywhere and to be a fence to just sell stolen items everywhere :)

For me that build is a great rogue/ranger :)

Picking The Thief Stone as your guardian stone when you find it will make you learn everything you need 20% faster so you will level faster :)

You should also join the Dark Brotherhood when you have the option (https://elderscrolls.fandom.com/wiki/With_Friends_Like_These...) as their quest line will give you good light armor (Shrouded Armor) and later even greater ancient leather armor (Ancient Shrouded Armor) that looks great and makes you immune to poison, you move more silently and bows do 35% more damage and daggers do 2 times more sneak attack damage.
