Ok just now Summer Conference ended, apart from GODLY Witcher III trailer there was news about creating new platform called GoG Galaxy...

So it seems CD Project is aiming to build rival for steam...

What's good about it:

  • Still all games DRM-free

  • Totally optional (unlike Steam)

  • You don't have to stay online

  • Cross-play - you can play on multiplayer with players from Steam/Uplay/Origin

So what do you think about it? Does it have any chance? I mean steam is quite powerful enemy after all

Edit (06.06.2014)

Ok so it seems that finally page gog.com/galaxy is working like it should.

Still no more information than they said on conference, but now you can watch advertising material for GoG galaxy. I must say that soothing voice telling everything that most of gamers think... is enough for me to even consider it as "something"... Uplay or Origin did a great job to piss me off, and I'm never ever using those AGAIN.

But ya I agree that steam is top dog... or rather heavy FAT warhound... it might be not possible for GoG galaxy to be on par with it... but for DRM-free lovers like me... it might be just enough to win my heart.

Nothing will de-throne steam, simply because it would be a pain in the ass to move to another platform. If a new platform offered to copy your entire steam library to their service, along with giving free games if you give up steam, the majority of people still wouldn't do it because of the hassle.

You never know. Imagine a new generation of games with new technologies like virtual reality making games we play today so outdated that most people lose interest on them. And imagine a new platform leading that new industry: steam de-throned in a few years. It has happened before and it will happen again.

So by this same logic, Windows never has to worry about competition in computers and Android never has to worry about competition in phones. They've got the biggest market share right now and switching to a different OS is a huge pain if you want to keep your old stuff. Likewise, people will never stop using Facebook and iTunes is the only service people will ever use for music.

Someday, somebody will make something that is better than steam. People will buy a game or two during sales and over time they will buy less and less on steam until one day they decide to make the switch and only use steam when they want to play the old games they don't own on the new service.

Was thinking the same when I saw this. This would need full cooperation of Electronic Farts, You-be-soft, and Steam, and full integration with their API's. We'll see, though, and can always hope, right?!

You can play some games on Origin with Steam users, like Crysis 2 I think, but Origin bans you if you do that.

I have no idea where you're getting this information from. If you notice EA games that are both on Steam and Origin have a built in friends system. Why? so people can play with their friends who are on a different platform. You're pretty empty headed if you think that they would ban you since I've played Medal of honor and Crysis 2 with my friends while I was on origin and they were on steam.

A lot of steam games are just normal PC releases and don't rely on steam for any multiplayer functionality. If a game is available outside of steam then chances are its multiplayer is "multiplatform"

Even with the DRM functionality of Steam stripped, it still offers many useful features. An in-client store, wallet, full transaction support, a community, groups, chat and all that, an organised library with games that have an auto-patching service so you're always running up-to-date, and Big Picture mode. This new platform could offer similar features; perhaps more new ones, too.

Steam ins't an always-on DRM. One time activation is necessary, but later on you can play offline, so the point

  • You don't have to stay online

is moot.

Depends on the game itself really. But for the most part, you still need to turn Steam on (whether you are actually online or not) and then set it to offline mode.

I'm actually getting alot of free games thanks to Steam/Origin competition so.. Welcome aboard GoG Galaxy!

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

That might be Origin's reason, because they're trying desperately to build up their consumer base, but Steam isn't giving away free games because of this so-called competition. Steam doesn't even have a say in which games to give away besides their own, and these devs definitely don't care about what Origin is up to. These giveaways are usually meant to promote an upcoming sequel or something. Ie. Sniper Elite v2 was given away recently to promote Sniper Elite 3. Honestly, I doubt Origin is even a blip on Valve's radar right now. It's sites like Amazon and GMG who are the actual, healthy competition to them.

That said, good luck to GOG. Unlike EA, and much like Valve, they've actually earned the trust of their customers over the years and I have no problems supporting it along with Steam.

It'll never overtake Steam, unless Valve would sell to EA. I've been suggesting this drm-free platform to them last year on their forum, one that would work as a game launcher, friend messenger, online store and all the gimmicks while being optional, to respect those GoG lovers that fear anything that look like Steam. They did exactly this. This platform will make GoG more friendly to those that doesn't want to go check the main website on a regular basis and just want to boot up a little app with everything at their disposition. Means more players will be aware of their sales/new arrival so it's a win-win for everyone.

The regional pricing is not GOG's choice, it's the publisher's. GOG is taking the hit in order to be able to sign them up and offer their games.

of course the eating the cost bit didn't come until they got some backlash for it(previously they had sworn up and down region pricing would never happen). it wasn't something they freely volunteered....
and the in store credit is the most annoying way they could have implemented it.

True, but if it's going to drive them out of business, I'd rather they just didn't sign anyone who can't realize regional pricing for digital goods is shit.

Publisher for Witcher 3 is actually Namco it seems. Witcher 1 and 2 were published by Atari. That applies to the majority of the retail copies at least, but in any case, there is something fucked up for them in order to get into the whole hussle with region pricing and trying to fix it for the customers. Otherwise they try to stay exclusively away from it.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I don't really know. If that's the case, it seems they like having their cake and eating it too. One difference is that GOG credit really amounts to more games, no strings attached. If it were Origin, I'd say they 're doing it to hook you on their service. As for Steam, well they just don't give a damn.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Yes, but they also have a publisher (Namco Bandai) for retail and that publisher wants regional pricing, so they won't allow GoG to sell the download version without regional pricing.

Since it's DRM free it can never be revoked.

Whoo, that was me. Yeah, real nice of them to eat the difference on the regional pricing. I think they said they'll do it with other games if the publisher's insist on using regional pricing.

It's definitely one thing that draws me to GOG, being in the UK we do get some things slightly unfair over here (not as bad as Australia at least)

That was just part of the knee jerk reaction to them adding the regional pricing in the first place. Then they had their back to their roots promotions and said they will try to offer credit on games above 9.99.. instead of doing the GMG regional coupon to bring a game down to costs of other regions. Pile on the annoying wallet credit.

Article

"This will apply to every single game where we do not have flat pricing, such as Age of Wonders 3 (full details here), Divinity: Original Sin, and The Witcher 3. If you remember the Fair Price Package for The Witcher 2, this will be exactly the same."

currently they have no client program bullshit. but people keep asking for it for some baffling reason so apparently now they'll have one like desura so the crazy people can have their steam experience. "oh no i can't open a browser to use a store, help me by putting it in my game for me all the time just in case I ever want to buy something" then how did they even post the suggestion in the first place, did they have help?

granted desura (and i assume gog will be) is worlds better than their alternatives but... i mean really? why? what could a pointless shell client possibly add?

(you can probably tell...im not a fan of the clients the last thing we need is the consolization pc gaming

its the same number of clicks to get to the in client store anyway. in your analogy thats walking to the garage getting in the car driving around the block to get to the other side of your house parking on the street and walking through the neighbor's lawn. instead of just walking to the back door on foot.

I can go to a website when i want to use their store, browse catalog easily, log in(which can be saved) to download my game collection ect. play game hassle free whenever and anywhere i want from my flashdrive or whatever.

or i can download and log into a wholly unnecessary client to manage my games and launch my games through that occasionally refuses to open for a bit while it updates(the client not the game) spams me with group notifications and ads for sales i don't care about, but its great because it includes a direct link to the store with a slightly clumsier interface. yep. sounds like walking 5 miles on foot for groceries to me. (9_9 the only good thing steam has is workshop and they didn't bother to add one for say morrowind anyway.

joy, i can update decade old games automatically when the devs release a new patch and only have to pay the price of welding an underused copy of google+ into the process tracking my playtime. edit- oh, i forgot. it has aol instant messenger built in too.

Since GFWL is shutting down, uPlay often doesn't let uplay your games due to terrible infrastructure and Origin is run by retards, it's nice to see a new player. GOG already offers a 30 day money back guarantee and is generally asslicking its customers, this might be an extra motivation for Valve to get their shit together regarding PROPER CUSTOMER SUPPORT.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Origin also offers a money back guarantee and in fact offered it before GOG did. Origin and GOG are the only companies to really explain a money back policy. Only thing Steam lets you do is cancel pre-orders.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Yeah but comparing Origin's library to the one of GOG, you can tell the difference.
Origin was never meant (or due to too little effort on EA's side simply didn't make it) to be real competition, that's why they keep asslicking and desperately throwing free games/DLCs at you and whatnot when you get to their support live chat. Steam is huge, they can lean back and basically not give a fuck as long as nobody establishes a similar service, with a similar size of game library and pricing conditions.

Now both, Steam and GOG have dirt cheap games and huge libraries, the only thing that GOG lacks is a client - that's about to change and we'll see what happens next. I sincerely hope Valve finally starts putting more work into their customer support. And even if GOG is no real competitor to Steam at this point, it's still nice to see progress, especially when the upcoming GOG stuff is fully optional.
