As you know there were lately many threads about Snow Globes and predictions about card prices. Some of us (me too) were predicting that prices will fall to 0.03-0.05 euro… as you see we couldn't be more wrong. I think that main problem is that we didn't calculate important factor: servers being jammed. Probably that's why there is "panic" on market right now and the prices are slowly rising… many people are having hard time buying it cheap so they decide to go for cards with higher price…

But never mind this.

The really issue is: did you profit? Or did you lose? That's kinda funny battle of traders, sellers fighting with buyers.

As for me (we are talking only about Snow Globes)

I sold all in all 14 cards - > "earning" 2.27 euro -> average price per card 0.16 (after steam-tax)

Bought all in all 10 cards -> "paying" 1.30 euro -> average price per card 0.13

Outcome ->0.97 euro (It proves that I'm rather poor trader)

And from crafting 1 badge I got: :tcry: emoticon, Holiday Sale 2013 - Surgeon Simulator wallpaper and Portable Smissmas Spirit Dispenser (I dunno why but I can't even sell it)… so yeah it was gamble and I lost the game.

Can't say that I lost something… didn't spend single penny so it's not that bad…

And what about you? How much did you earn/lose? How many badges? What items? I'm especially curious about heavy spender .

Yesterday I traded 5 Snow Globe cards (3 + 2 x same) for Batman: AA GoTY.

If it was a gift, it's a decent deal, if it was a key, it's a really nice deal for the other guy as the game worth $0,25 (humble bundle).

Comment has been collapsed.

No. The Bundle was minimum $1. So Batman AA key is worth $1. You couldn't pay 0.25 to get it. There are no averages. It's $1 whether you want 1 game or all the non-BTA games. Besides, that bundle is long over, so the "value" goes up. 5 Snow Globe cards yesterday were around 0.13 - 0.17 each depending on your market luck. I would say its a fair deal even if it was a key. In fact, had the Batman owner held out longer, he probably could've gotten even more in the future.

sure i can buy just one game for 0,25...

If Batman AA is for $1, are you saying rest of those bundled games are for nothing?

Since you can sell each key individually, when you talk about their value you need to consider that detail too.

But, since you can't buy that bundle now, it's value isn't that low. I sold mine for around $2 (give or take exchange rates).

In the Group Buys Steam group you could get it for $0.25, still might be able to if you're lucky.

Granted, Group Buys only has 4,000-and something members so it's not massively widely known and only a small volume of Batman AA will have been bought and sold on there (we're likely talking single figures). So it's not going to generally affect trading prices - their rules are no profit allowed btw, hence the cheap price. Still, it remains that you could and might still be able to get it for $0.25 if you looked in the right place.

Batman AA it's not worth 0,25$ since you can't buy it at this price, I see people easily trading it for a key, so in the end it was a good deal for both I'd say.

Crafted 10 badges, the best I got was one rare Phase whatever worth only 30 cents at the time I got it, otherwise mostly common items and one rare emoticon worth 20 cents. I ended up with -10 euros.

Me for example. I'm from Argentina (where you have to multiply the price of any game by 10 in some cases) and I don't own a credit card. Also thanks to the policy we have in our country I can't add money to Paypal. That being said, using the card system I can afford some games by my own (for example Tomb Raider, I bought it at 12bucks earning money via cards). Otherwise it results more complicated to buy original games to me.

It wasn't that much of a gamble as you might think. There were only "few" cards on market (in tens and hundreds) and with Steam having millions of users and many of them are crazy when it comes to leveling/buying/getting stuff right away when they are introduced it was rather "clear" that the price will go up for the first few hours/days.

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

It was actually a gamble... I don't even get what happened... The cards were at 0.15 for the first few days, then they suddently got to 0.50... How was that even possible? More cards = Less Value, yet this time it changed like Hell... Probably many people, like you, bought all the cheap cards, and then people saw the prices high and let them high too, but it was still a big gamble, since in terms of logic, that could not happen at all... I was hitting myself on a wall for not doing this too...

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Because you could get them from the 10th but the greater majority did not know about the cards until the steam sale started. That´s when (and why!) the price jumped. In hindsight it wasn´t too big of a gamble, but sn00ze did take a risk. Somewhat calculated, I´m sure, but a risk.

But you had Snow Globes from crafting badges before Steam Sale? 0.80 euro for one card is great profit! But you could earn that much only of first day... I kinda was late for biggest profit. But 8 euro that's nice! It's like another free decent game.

Actually, people go for more expensive cards because before you F5 and get Steam to load new list, other traders already bought everything there :) .

I spend like 10 minutes yesterday (when all was working like it should, not with today's servers...) trying to buy one last card to finish badge (yeah, decided to live dangerously instead selling them) and every time I loaded page everything for less than 0.14 euro was already purchased after I seen list.
So I started to wander to second page, where it suddenly was not 0.12, but 0.15 (shows how bad those steam traders from first page are) and were F5 hoping some 0.12 would appear on second page. After less then one minute some massive wave of cards came and 6 appeared on second page, had no problem purchasing then. Crafted and got some rubbish.
Rest sold for 0.15 euro pm market - all went in one hour, even through Steam still reports lowest price being around 0.12.

Also, had pre-voting cards, sold them for 0.3 euro only through - which means only around 20 euro for me, not around 40 :(

I decided to invest about $15 this year into just buying cards, so now I'm up to level 30. This'll help my booster pack drop rate, up my friends list, give me another showcase, all sorts of things. Also bought a phased asa sydanya, Vasto skin, and Vauban skin for Warframe, but most of that I covered from other sales. If you look at the badges in a long-term view, over time it's worth it to sell the expensive ones ( use a site like http://ehsankia.com/steam/cards/ to help determine what cards are worth in what sets) and build badges out of the cheap ones. For the most part if you get half a set of cards and want to build a badge, just buy the rest, unless the price difference is exceedingly high. Also, if you can swing it and want to level up, save your cards until a sale pops up and involves making badges, and then you can make more prize cards or whatever with your badges. I may put in another $15 or so next summer or Christmas if I feel like I've got a swing at it and I'm not too busy buying games.

I'd say I profitted. I crafted to level 5 or 6 (not sure cause I cant see right now since community is acting dopey), but I made out like a bandit when the sale first started as I had 5 globes right when the sale started and sold them all for around $1.60 each. I've bought a few, traded for a few, sold a few.

As for items received, only got crap. I got one of the Dota rares that I sold for a few bucks though. The axe thing (I dont play the game) rest was all garbage.

I gained a few U.S. dollars by all the trading, selling off my dozen cards. I never crafted, and had no interest in the badge.

When I look at the Steam market, I think this is far too much time investment for far too little return. You accumulated hours of trading and thought for far less than the minimum wage. Perhaps it's a good gateway to stock trading.

I think such stability of prices - at least strange. More than 75,000 copies, which will disappear after 2 hours.., people are strange.

P.S. I earned about $5 USD . Cards are do not bought, (with this event) took itself only the background and smiles. :)

The real reason why prices haven't gone down is because of greed. People rather let their cards expire than to sell for .04 cents. There were initially 2 trains of thought:

1) when the sale nears the end, all sellers wanting some money will instantly lower their prices to get whatever they can (what most people would have believed), and/or
2) Buyers will be so desperate that they will buy up the cheap cards and eventually work their way up to the more expensive ones (what most of these 70,000 card sellers probably believe, and is actually happening).

Also, most sellers probably forgot they listed cards for sale.

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Yep I totally agree with you. The two main points are that many people doesn't know the cards are expiring and forgot about the cards they listed. Well, yea also a lot of greedy people don't want to sell them for like 0.05$/€ maybe even not for 0.15. What a shame.

Another thing is the market is overloaded at the moment it doesn't work properly. Many people will give up selling cards to get 0.10 cents.

Or, people can't lower their prices (or sell at all) because steam servers are completely fucked up today. I got a foil card just half an hour or so but cannot sell it because the steam website is always crashing at the last step -.-
