When you hit the space bar on your keyboard does the thumb you use correspond to your dominant hand? I'm left-handed and I use my left thumb.

I just tried typing a few sentences, and found I typically use my right middle finger. (I'm right handed.)

Sometimes I'll use my left thumb (right handed) if the last letter I typed was on the left side of the keyboard. Otherwise I just use my right thumb.

I took typing in high school and we were our right thumb for proper hand position.

If this is a puzzle, I don't get it.

If it were a puzzle it would be categorized under "puzzles", and you would probably see an invite-only giveaway on my SG profile to know there was a giveaway to look for at all.

Just like you, I'm left-handed and I use my left thumb to hit the spacebar.

I never thought about it much, but I'm right handed and have a tendency to use my left thumb often- but I think it works this way:

if the last letter I type is with my right hand, then I often tend to use my left thumb for spacebar
if " " " " " " " left hand, " " " " "' " right thumb " "

I tried randomly typing to see what I did and it looks like I use my right hand pointer finger (I'm right handed). I think if I didn't move both my hands like crazy while typing I'd probably use the thumb on my dominant hand but because I type faster when moving my hands really randomly it just feels more natural to use my finger instead of my thumb.

This is basically me.. I never thought about it but yeah, I move my hands so much that no thumb. I mostly move my right hand too more than my left but still both.

Funny thing is I type so differently from the way that I learned to type in school and it works just fine for me, lol.

I never really learned from school. This way works fine for me too, hell, I type faster than most people I know so I can't complain.

left thumb/right hand -- interesting question and poll results. =)

i think the reason that is and will likely remain the majority is due to habit of right handers having their hand on the mouse, otherwise if we never invented the mouse and we strictly used touchpad or similar where the keyboard is, right handers would typically use their right thumb. but we (right-hander mouse users) mostly adapted.

You know.. I just typed some stuff to test.. I don't use my thumbs while typing xD I was hitting with me right index finger.

I'm right handed (primarily) and I use my left thumb for the space-bar.
I think it's from playing so many FPS games, and space is usually the jump key, with the right hand occupied by the mouse. :3

But typing is different than just using it for jumping :P

When I play games I most definitely use my left thumb for the space, but in terms of typing my thumbs aren't involved.

Yes, I know, I'm an improper typist :X
I just got so used to using my left thumb on the spacebar that now it's bad habit ;_;

According to the posts in the thread it doesn't seem like an improper typist heh
Also who is to say what is proper and improper, if it works for you who cares ^.^

You sure it is not the proper way to type?

I have a bad habit of hitting caps + key + caps for capital letters but I sometimes use shift too.. it's kind of odd, I'm getting more used to shift but it is so much faster for me to hit caps lol

It would be interesting to ask this question to people who don't play games and see if those of them who are right-handed use right thumb more often.

I use both. Maybe because because some lady from somewhere told me when I was a kid that I can use both hands equally good.

If i practice that is :P

As others pointed out, for gaming, when the left hand is on WASD, I use the left thumb for Space exclusively. But when typing, I use both thumbs (alternating). Right-handed, btw..

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

yeah, for me i do alternate some too.. something like 3/1 ratio, 3x left thumb to every 1x right thumb on avg. but a little heavier on left even though i'm right handed.

Gamers will always use left hand thumb for space. My logic is that most gamers are used to the WASD position, with the pinky on thew shift key and the thumb on the space bar. People who type the "right way" though, will feel mostly comfortable with either thumbs because both are placed on/close to the space bar.

I think it would be fair to say I'm a gamer but I find it awkward using my left thumb. I think what may influence it is whether you play FPS games (with a keyboard) a lot before or around the time you learn to touch-type. I learnt to touch-type when I was about 13 and before and around that age I mostly played games on console, or games on the PC were mostly strategy or simulation games (Civlization, Simcity etc.). I wouldn't have played many kb/m FPS until 16 or past that.

Probably depends on what you're doing.

If I'm typing I can use either thumb but if I'm using the mouse as well then 100% the left thumb, and if I'm watching videos, right index.

Yeah, I realised after my post that maybe some people even interpret the OP question not specific to when touch typing with two hands. If I'm playing a platformer with WASD/spacebar or my right hand is on the mouse I'm sure my left thumb would be comfortable.
I thought it would be a given that if using the mouse with right hand, no one would be using their right thumb to hit space.

Right handed, I chose left thumb just to pick an answer... but I use both thumbs. We still had typing class back in the stone age and those repetitive exercises always stressed an economy of energy; which meant hitting space with whichever thumb is attached to the hand which was most recently moving.

I can still remember the teacher droning on. JJ space FF space FJ space FJ space, FFJJ space FJFJ space, for 45 minutes. You'd dream about it by halfway through a semester.

I'm right-haneded, but I use two fingers to bump the space o.O now I noticed that it is left thumb or right forefinger o.O and sometimes I bump space even with my right thumb. I guess it is linked somehow to time since I played something and to length of my commment/post/anything, just to write more comfortable ^^

I had to check and it turned out that I'm using my pointing finger of left hand while being right-handed.

Poll doesn't include such option ;_;.

That's only preference though, I'm used to writing using any combination of fingers and buttons, sometimes I'm using left thumb, sometimes left pointing finger, hard to explain.

Right handed (use left mainly)

Right-handed, right thumb.
I was surprised by the result. It seems unnatural to me know to use the thumb of my left hand. I may be wrong but I feel like the left hand does more of the work already so having it also hit the spacebar as well would slow me down. I wonder if the reason I use my right-thumb is a combination of that and being right-hand dominant.
