A 'free trial' also known as a demo. I remember when those were the standard for most big games!

Yeah, exactly. Not this is the super amazing kindness from dev that he even conider making demo. And actually the demo is just for people, who wouldn't buy because of the reviews.

Of course a demo is a promotional tool, but it's a win-win case because it helps the player instead of annoying, teasing or deveiving him like many other marketing devices.

I don't mind demos. But demos should be in EVERY game today. We have end of the second decade of XXI age. We are not in ancient times where demos were in some games. And even back then, demos were very popular.

Sure. We are not in ancient times, we (sadly) are in vote with your wallet times. So if a game has no demo and I care enough to bother with it, I'll download and play the Caribbean demo and either stop or play the whole thing and eventually buy it.

It's not my standard procedure, but it does happen sometimes. In this specific case, I know I will play and like the game, it's just a matter of waiting until the GOTY edition is out and cheap enough for my tastes. :)

My current way of buing games is...

  1. When it's bigger game, announced many years backwards, I wait for it.
  2. Then I complain how expensive it is.
  3. Then people either hate it or hype. Usually never fairly. (Remember hype about NMS? And then hate? Yeah. That's like that all the time.)
  4. Then I don't buy the game. Not because I don't want it. It cost too much.
  5. So now the game is for really low price. O rather decent low. It should be like that on the release day. Maybe a lil higher for first day. But such price that wouldsatisfy me should be 50% off, while normal price should be even 5 times lower than it really is.
  6. Then i check some videos to look how the game really looks and feels like.
  7. Then I buy it.
  8. Or not. And so I have another game in eternal wishlist.

The question is what's worse: eternal wishlist or eternal backlog?

Permalink

Eternal wishlist is certainly cheaper. Gray market sites make discount prices stickier, so you should really only buy when you will play straightaway (says the one with 3600+ games in the library).

Backlogs are bad, but... I think wishlist are worse. Why? You can always change the future and start playing. You can't, if You didn't buy the games :) Also I have backlogs everywhere. In watching videos, in browsing arts, in cleaning my PC, in cleaning my browser's bookmarks, in cleaning my room, and in games ^^"

You can always remove the game from your wishlist...

But the person here is wanting a game. Wishlist is just a tool. removing a game from wishlist doesn't remove the problem, cause the want is still existing. Removing a game from wishlist is just short term fix, like drinking an alcohol instead of doing something to fix issues.

Yes, but you don't want to play all games equally. Some games you want to play more, while others less. So if you have a wishlist of hundreds of games, that you know you realistically will never play some (because by the time you reach them - newer games will be released, and you will want them more. Or the games you want to play now will be obsolete).
So there is no need to keep such games on your wishlist, and they can safely be deleted.

If the game is obsolette, it was a bad game in the first place.

Also not, it's stupid thinking. I would never play Crysis, which became my fav game, if I was thinking like that. I give a chance to a games, I think they look interesting.

You have Wolfstein 3D on your wishlist. This is a 1992 game, do you realistically think that you will ever play it and enjoy it?
Of course not, it's a 1992 game! It might have been great to play it in 1995 or even 1998, but in 2019 it's absolutely obsolete. AND you have 400+ games you want to play more.
There is no way you'll ever get to playing it.
So why keep it on your wishlist?

Even if you have a 2015 game, that's near the bottom of your wishlist, by the time you go over 400+ games to get to it, it's going to be 2025. And believe me you're not going to enjoy a 10 year old game, just because you once wanted to play it... 7 years ago,,,

Not to mention, that by 2025, that 400 games wishlist, will become a 1000+ wishlist, as meanwhile more games are released. So you won't reach the bottom of your wishlist in 2025, as you'll have all these new games that were added in between.

Well, why not? Did You assume that I play only new games and can't find fun in old ones?
Also... Wolfenstein 3D is pretty poor game, yeah. But why can't I just for fun, instead of taking this game seriously? And tbh, I played worse games than Wolfenstein 3D. Also it's higher chance that I randomly play game like that, than I play bigger game, because bigger game requires You to take it serious, take the time and efforts, while games like that are for relaxing purposes.

This is the reason I haven't finished Dark Souls 2 and 3 yet. Cause I have to prepare (not to die) for it.

Also, no. By 2025 the wishlist probably be smaller. Cause most of games I want, from like 30 years range are already here. Just by 6 years I won't double it. If the new games will be as boring as they are today, my wishlist will rather decrease. Also You know. I got plenty of money to buy games in Steam Winter Sale. Maybe I will pay 200, maybe 500 dollars this time. It depends if the games will have good deals or not.

Plus, You know? I know I added Wolfenstein 3D not so long ago. Like this year for sure. Maybe 2 months ago. Plus, You know. I just usually add whole series. All Fallout games, all Wolfenstein games, All Assassin's Creed games. I will enjoy some less than others, but come on. It doesn't necessarily mean I wouldn't enjoy WS3D because it's too old. There are games that are made today and You can't take them serious. Like Jazzpunk. But I want this game too. You can't take the JP too serious cause the mechanics is so old. Intentionally. And graphics? So ulgy. But the game isn't repulsing. This is why I want the game. I know it's not the same, but it's the same desire.

+1. They make it sound like it's something really special when it should be fairly common in the first place, and upon release instead of as a "free trial" when sales don't meet the publisher's expectations.

Are they offering a demo because the game didn't sell well compared to the previous Tomb Raider?

This seems very likely since they already dropped the price to 50% off on sale. They've had a lot sales already and it's even on sale right now. And as far as I can remember the previous two games never had a free trial, or such big discounts so soon. They seem almost desperate to boost sales.

Around an hour long. If you've played the previous games don't bother as it doesn't really showcase anything new. The only thing that it has going for it is that it allows you to play with the full range of settings and also includes the benchmark tool.

I'm not saying don't play the game, I'm saying don't bother with the demo. If you've played the previous games then you already know what to expect, the demo doesn't offer anything new.

Thanks for the info, I've played the previous two games extensively, and the reviews seem to agree with you. I will buy the game eventually, but don't wan't to unlock any achievements yet since they'll ruin my average completion statistic.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

You won't unlock any playing this, they only unlock if you actually buy the game. I'mm assuming the full game just checks your save for what you've already done and then awards the appropriate achievements.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Most, if not all, free Steam trials I've played had achievements unlock normally which mess up your average game completion rate if end up not buying the game, which is why I'm wary of free trials. Even though I'm sure I'll buy this game at some point, it will annoy me that it ruins my average completion rate until I do. Also the website states:

Unlock the complete game to carry over your progress and achievements/trophies!

Carrying over (from the trial) implies that achievements/trophies can be unlocked. Perhaps I'm misinterpreted this but I'd rather not take the risk.

As other people said, this isn't special. It's a demo.
The game didn't sell well, so this is just a way of trying to earn a bit more.
Of course, the game didn't sell well because this is Tomb Raider 2013 for the third time. No shit people don't care anymore. I'm surprised that RotTR even did that well. Though, in retrospect, it also didn't do well since it quickly went to the Monthly, got deep discounts and is now being given willy-nilly in random places.

I liked RotR because of the Byzantine theme. Yeah, that's about the only thing which differentiated it from the previous one.

First release sells well, people rush out and buy the second because "hype". It's not till after this and the upcoming release of the third that people start to realise there's really nothing special to see.

Books, music, games, you can see it in pretty much any medium.

sales were bad and the game sucks that why they release a demo! 😡
hope the game bombs hehehe 😡
it's nothing special it's a demo! 😡
wow they suck they release a demo now! 😡

maybe the developer already reached the profit threshold they wanted, and now it can be sold for less than $60 (doom 2016 anyone?).
but of course, if the game was still $60, devs would be greedy idiots trying to keep their game at maximum price till 2034! 😡

or maybe they released a demo so RTX card owners can test it?
nah, rtx also sucks and people buying those cards are fools wasting money! 😡

sg-mode: easier to say "the game is bad so they put a demo!". 🤦‍♀️

Doom has a multiplayer component. Games that have a heavy focus on multiplayer are marketed differently since attracting players is more important. Developers, not per se, but publisher for sure are extremely greedy. Lowering the price so soon for a game that's selling well is a bad business practice, and I've literally never seen any company do that.

Though it's possible that there are other reasons for such a high sale so soon, it's extremely unlikely. The game not doing well is the most likely scenario, especially if you read the reviews. I loved the previous two Tomb Raiders and have played all other Tomb Raiders before those, but the reality seems that this a mediocre game (based on the Steam reviews) with a bad story sadly. I will still get it, play it and probably enjoy it at some point, but the reality is they didn't make a compelling game according to the majority.

i don't see where the majority of the playerbase claims the game is bad.

https://www.metacritic.com/game/pc/shadow-of-the-tomb-raider/user-reviews
and i'm ignoring critics reviews, which as usual, if they contradict users, they have been paid, so it's biased?
well, i guess this time all users got paid too, generous square-enix at work. ^^

and steam? https://i.imgur.com/orRyC99.jpg
considering steam playerbase would put a negative vote because the game stuttered 1 second during a loading screen, i see nothing there that tells me this game is mediocre.
if the game was truly bad, everyone with a negative opinion would have posted a review since that's how it works (it's easier to feel compelled to make a negative review than a positive one).

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I didn't say it was bad, or at least that wasn't my intent, I sad it was mediocre (in my opinion from what I've gathered reading user reviews) hence the low sale figures. There are a lot of 6 and 7 in the metacritic score link you posted, as well as the overal score being 6.9. For me that confirms it's a pretty mediocre game, especially if you compare it to the previous two installments Tomb Raider & Rise of the Tomb Raider. Perhaps we are both drawing different conclusions from the same data, that is your right of course.

Steam's positive reviews are easy to explain for a mediocre game, since you can only like or dislike a game, most people will give a positive review for a game that is just "meh". The numbers are pretty insignificant in that case, I've drawn my conclusions from the reviews I've read. Yet in the end there's no point in arguing over taste, I'm not here to tell you what's right or wrong, believe what you want and I'll do the same, I just wanted to give my opinion on what you said.

On a side note it saddens me to still see you so angry (or that's how it seems to me at least), I do hope things go well for you.

Honestly, I miss the days of Shareware. When a game was broken into 3 or 4 episodes and the 1st part released for free
-Then the laughable demos appeared with one level...two if you got lucky
-Now all we have is the cancer called Preorder, and the virus called Early Access
-And slowly the Free to Play plague has crept in, riddled with the ugly sores of Micro-transactions
...all in the name of greed

Damn, I played the demo and really loved it. Seriously, gamers have got to be one of the most whiny and spoilt cultures out there. With all the nitpicking, complaining and moaning I read in the reviews I wasn't expecting to find a more than decent game which was evidently improved compared to the previous ones.
