  • The guy is willing to give you a free game in exchange for opening a 4-pack for him.
    You give him 3 TF2 Keys as collateral, he gives you the 4-pack. After you open it, you trade the 3 extra copies for your 3 TF2 Keys back.

Nah,they trade, he gives 3 key and he gets 4 pack to open, after he opens he gets game added to library and he trades again with Denek and gives back 3 copy of game for his 3 key.

3 key is just to avoid getting scammed and someone running away with your 4-pack.

Indeed. I'd gladly do it, since I've been wanting a copy of Terraria for a while, but I've only got one TF2 in my inventory and I'm not interested in buying more simply to have collateral.

I think he's saying you give him 3 keys in collateral, get a Terraria four-pack, open it, trade the three gifts back for the 3 keys, and then he probably sells them. Not sure if it's trading or not.

Sounds like you're right. I think most people don't understand how a 4 pack works.

When you open a four pack, one copy is automatically added to your Steam Library, while 3 gift copies are added to your inventory. If you already own the game (as Denek already does), then it won't work. So, its best to have someone who doesn't own it open the pack, thus they get a game and you get your 3 copies back.

There are a number of people that do this kind of collateral exchange for 4-packs on ST, which makes sense. You'd want the opener to have some incentive to give back the 3 extra copies.

He just wants someone to open the gift pack for him since he can't do it himself probably because its already in his Library. Then we get one Terraria and he gets 3 back from us. The 3 keys are what he will hold with himself until we return the 3 gifts, as a safety.

You can trust me, I'll give 3 back to you.

Playing those games has nothing to do with actually having the keys. You don't earn them from playing. They're purchased from Valve, via Steam, and make a useful commodity for the purposes of trading.

Just to be sure you are aware, you can't trade a 4-pack unless this 4-pack was bought using an exploit against the Steam store. And that isn't exactly a clean way to get a gift you can recommend to everyone.
