I'll try once more.
Three of the games I finished aren't on Akfas' spreadsheet, but they're all single-player, and I got all of their achievements this June and July.
Spelunky - "Made It"
South Park - "Stick Savior"
Mordheim - "Sisters of Sigmar - Act 2"
South Park had 3 minutes idle time prior to the event, but no achievements. Mordheim has achievements for finishing the story campaign with each faction, all titled "[playable faction] - Act 2." If there are any issues, I need to know as soon as possible for the sake of the event.
Edit: Thanks!

Cool, looking forward to this round!
This one was heavy. Instead of a small scale game of LiS1 where the "universe" is small, and it's kind about introspection within that small world and the feelings it evokes, the second game doesn't pull its punches, it has a smorgasbord of trigger warnings. It's politically and ideologically loaded, the locations change by season, you have to manage your brother's morality and power-confidence, while trying to pick the choice that is the best for both of you. And often get chewed out for it. Some aspects made it really hard for me to play the game as it made me feel almost physically unwell, but - especially thinking back - it's a really, really well done game, some parts of it really stuck with me, but at the same time I'm happy I'm done with it.
I don't know what I expected, but I didn't really like it. It looks good the story makes sense, but idk, I expected a simple, grounded and nice story, instead of that I got something that makes absolutely no sense in reality. I don't know if they elaborated on it, but it's likely memories mixing, that's why things just happen randomly, you find paint hidden within picture frames to continue your own painting... even mid-run it felt like those scenes in movies, where so many things off that you wait the reveal that this is a dream, or memories as the protagonist is dying, or...
Short, bizarre in a good way, basically a creepypasta game. I don't have any strong opinions on it. Was moderately interesting and because of the length was a great fit for the event :)
Mix of PS1 collectathlon games and some more modern QoL changes, a pretty cool game. Some features are spelled out for you more than necessary, others are not told or used a lot later, by the time you forget about it (water bubble breath can "water" dry plants to make better platforms). It's not too long, inviting, objectively cute. You have to collect most of the 40 eggs to finish the game, the difficulty is in finding stuff and managing to get it. Basically there's no combat.
Good old Scriptwelder's 4th Don't Escape game, likely bigger than the 3 previous together. Unique feature for a point and click, that you have same location throughout the 4 days, but for each day there are multiple options for dangers to manage. Day 2 - freezing cold or searing hot - these prompt the collection of different items and different methods planning for survival. You play whatever you want to play, but I DO recommend this because likely many of you have this game from a Monthly, and would scroll past it. It's a really nice game, done with care and expertise.
Oh boy. 100% achievements and thinking if I'd recommend it or not. It's kinda sloppy for a precision platformer, but the world/level ideas and their interaction with the "you can age things" arrows of yours is genuinely awesome. The story's first half is kind of nonsense, typical "don't do that, it's evil" "but I do that because I literally have no options, also it will move the plot forward!" things. Second half of the story is a lot better, and the gameplay supports the story, though in doing that you get ALL THE MECHANICS in the whole game dumped on you, and it gets... difficult? Complex? It's almost comical when I have to check, which of the three different bars / mechanics led me to die.
Also a reasonable issue that most of the story is presented to you mid-chapter, and the end of the chapter. And a chapter consists of like 10 puzzles, not counting the extra puzzles for the collectibles. So the story is fragmented, and it's hard to stay emotionally invested in a hamfisted "you're special, and brave, and you have to find your strength, you're overtaxing yourself" narrative randomly in the middle, while I'm actively cussing out the too sensitive jump mechanics on the 8th level since.

I second everything regarding "Don't Escape", great game, good short story, meaningful decisions.
Enjoyable few hours!

Honorable mentions to Valkyria Chronicles 4, ΞV: Rings of Saturn, and Vampyr which I started for this challenge but didn't make the cut. Valkyria was just too slow, Rings of Saturn is a sandbox game with landmark for completion, and Vampyr was a bit directionless. I'm glad we have the 2 months every so often to be able to experiment and work in some flex games.

Broken Age / Started on June 10th / Finishedβ on July 28th Unbroken. | Before playing: There are two sides to this game it's Tim Schafer's game and it was funded through Kickstarter. It's a perfect set-up for a potentially unfocused and self-indulgent game with a rushed ending. After playing: I liked it, but "the end" was a real ambush for me. "Act" structure made me think there would be 3 of them. No, actually after "Act II" achievement there was one more short "puzzle situation" and then the happy end. Even narratively it made more sense that there would be another heroic push against now fully established "big bad", but it's all resolved in a dozen sketches played along with the end credits. |
Borderlands 3 / Started on June 26th / Finishedβ on July 11th Bye, Felicia! (Pops up after completing the final mission. "Bye, Felicia!" is a 2012 meme (in the 2019 game) and a "Friday" reference - a dismissive way to goodbye someone. Here it applies both to the final boss and the player, I guess). | Before playing: I gather that people don't like "Borderlands 3", at least not as much as the second one. They say the writing became bad and cringe. I'm sure, I'll survive millennial humor as long as gunplay remains snappy and addictive. After playing: I remembered why I didn't finish bunch of DLCs in Borderlands2, why I even muted the game so I can listen to anything a little bit more meaningful than the same tongue-in-cheek comedy bits delivered in the same loud or deadpan manner. It's not bad (depends on how you define it), it's just too much of the same. And I'm having a bit of a problem that legendary weapons curse you with overpower. One-shotting everything is fun at first but soon it becomes mind-numbing. What do I suppose to do? You can't up the difficulty before NG+ and nerfing yourself deliberately by abstaining from legedary guns is antithetical to looter-shooter genre. |
π€The Callisto Protocol / Started on June 15th / Finishedβ on July 6th I Do Belong Here (Beat the game on any difficulty) | Before playing: I was so hyped for this game that I even asked my friend for his steam account to play it almost on release (he got the game for free with his new AMD GPU). My initial pure "wow!" impression carried me for a pretty long time until without any warning I got hit with "wtf is even this?". I finished the game and then needed some time alone lol, trying to answer this question. After playing: Still not sure if I like the game, but I like that it exists. It fills me with strange aprreciation. Like seeing a polished turd. Yes, the combat is a turd but someone successfully managed to polish around it with presentation, sounds and graphics (although UE4 engine now feels somehow old, since a bunch of UE5 games that I played made me aware of "engine looks" phenomena. UE4 looks are of plastic). |
βEvil West / Started on July 11th / Finishedβ on July 15th Expert (Beat the game on Hard). | Before playing: I noticed when it came out it was praised and recommended, but now steam reviews are not afraid to give this game some beating for being janky and old-fashioned. I myself clearly see that it's a game of smaller budget, so no inflated expectations. After playing: I was very into it! "Hard" difficulty very pleasantly teased and tickled all the right parts of my brain. And visuals are nice, art-direction saves the day. The story is straighforward, even simplistic but comprehensible and realized, the writer cared. I honestly wonder why even attack games like this! Well, I guess if you payed full 50$ for it, your expectation are stricker, but it's not at all the case for me, cause I traded for it on Lestrades. |
Blue Fire / Started on July 15th / Finishedβ on July 19th 100%. | Before playing: Success is never promised in "precision platformers", there is a ton of details you need to consider that make it or break it, especially in 3d. By all accounts "Blue fire" works, but I'm preemptively ready to blame camera for catching projectiles or missing ledges on jump. After playing: Couple hours in I was like "It's a platforming Dark souls!", and then I remembered we already have this. So - yeah - "Blue Fire" is a 3d "Hollow knight" with more complex platforming (thanks to extra dimension), the same narrative tricks (cute with sad), but much more scarce (and worse) combat (of course, if you don't count occasional battles with the camera). I liked it in the end, but platformers are not my fav genre. I only really love Ori out of them. |
Steelrising / Started on July 21st / Finishedβ on July 24th Queen: Versailles (Final boss achievement). | Before playing: "Blue fire" got me in the mood for some more pure soulslike experience. Steelrising is getting mixed reviews but many such game is getting buried in the rather wide zone of "not literally Dark Souls, so it's bad". If you challenge the king, you better become the king in the end. Otherwise it's a treason! After playing: It started, I'd dare say, great! But soulslike games, besides all obvious aspects, are information gathering games. The "unknown" is the main enemy. Alas, "Steelrising" reveal all its cards in its first half, and then: same enemies with same movesets in the same scenarios. Yeah, enemies tried to get beefier and add some new tricks, but I was overleveling much faster than them and I didn't need a new trick since nobody could foil my "immobilization" build, that I didn't know I had, until I realized that I first-tried 3 bosses in a row. |

I have a google doc for this event, it shows what games are eligible for the event and what is needed etc..
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1xBd5rltp8WxQSnG2BVKPzr7quTLJCvCt2MaGCxzs-d8/edit?usp=sharing
Also a website with same game list as google doc but I first update google doc and then some time later website
https://www.choiceevent.xyz/games
If any suggestions for website or excel to add or improve, feel free to write to me or contact me.
Also I think it's about time to make this official, at least google doc. (already wrote to CJ) But any comments about this? Maybe you think this shouldn't be made official, aka next to "List of eligible games:" as no need? Or any other comment?

I would love it if we could sign into the site with our steam account, or sync our library some other way. We could filter the games we actually own that way.

and a tip for this link, just change appid for your specific game, i.e. "601510"

Yes, this is a great way to check if the game was played only during the event(not before or after the event (you can play it after of course, though the proof of finishing the game achievement matters)).
Also it shows if you finished the game, that is if you got needed achievement. (any ways to confirm if you played correctly we would look at achievements of the game if it has it, otherwise screenshot of the end game/credits would be needed etc.)
TLDR, your current screenshots are not needed but you can link to your achievements for games to easier check if you followed the rules and finished the game. :)
It would look something like this for your game

For the sake of future events - Figment 2 is both more, and less than the first one. It stops being a unique (and annoying) puzzle, and becomes a standardish action game with 3-hit combos and dodgeroll. The story remains interesting. It was a nice surprise me, as I similarly didn't enjoy the first Figment too much.

Bump! Explanation for Aaero since it doesn't have an ending achievement:
It has 3 difficulties, 15 levels and 3 bosses. Progress is tied to Stars, 5 for each level, so even if player failed to kill the boss it still counts the level as beaten and with enough Stars they can continue to another level. But! End credits only rolls if the player beats the third and final boss, if not they're back to level select screen.
So I count beating all levels and bosses as the finish point! Game's fun enough that I finished higher difficulties as well ^_^

You have been giving us this beautiful backlog/treasure chest-killing event every month (and change) for over 5 years, spending your money and time for us... you have nothing to apologize for, CJ. You don't owe us, we owe you.
First one is a game I meant to play for a while but couldn't find the time. Metro Exodus. Enjoying it so far but it's a bit of a slog with immense areas to explore, a limited map and very similar looking settings. I got turned around a lot and lost, which is not very fun in a FPS. I normally like exploration in games but this feels like it's distracting from the main story. Too many collectibles and such maybe, I dunno.
Next was Builder Simulator. All in all it's an ok simulator. I wouldn't recommend breaking the piggy bank for it as it has completion bugs that are frustrating and they haven't been fixed since 2022 so probably won't be. I wish I'd known about Playway's scammy practices but then I didn't give them any money for the game so my hands are clean. Kinda.
Descenders was a bit of a let down. After sinking hundreds of hours in Riders Republic, I was expecting something just as fun and maybe a little more realistic but it was insanely difficult for no reason at all. And I guess the devs didn't think the game was hard enough from the achievements at 2% completion so they dumped a bunch of ludicrous precision platforming levels as an update. The completion numbers tell you everything you need to know about the fun to be found there.
You wipe out so randomly that the only way to get some of the achievements and finish levels is to ride the bike like you're in traffic without even trying to do any special moves for fear you're going to have to start all over again. It's frustrating.
Paradigm was funny. I'm usually not that into surrealist games but this one really takes the concept and runs with it. You get to do some crazy stuff but it's hilarious.
Stray Gods was a mixed experience. I really liked the art, the voice acting and most of the writing (although the story was kinda predictable if you know anything about Greek mythology) but the music? oh wow. I know quite a few musicals and this is by far the worst I've ever heard. The music and the lyrics are so bad, I literally ended up turning off the song volume and laughed at the lyrics.
It's too bad because there was a cool concept there, some of the characters story since ancient times are well crafted and making a rock (uh ish) musical game out of it could have been fun. But yeah not everyone can write music, or a musical, let alone a fragmented one where songs change depending on your choices mid-song.
I ended up racking 15 hours trying to get all the achievements because you can't skip the songs, only to realize you need to have the DLC to 100% the game. I'm definitely not getting that.
Now Western Press is a loooot of fun. It was on my wishlist forever until Dolly gave me a key for it (thank you Dolly!). I'm so glad I got to play it. It's very much like One Finger Death Punch with a western theme but way shorter levels. Tournaments are cool and it must be a blast to play with friends so i'll try to convince my tribe to play it with me during my vacations. I'll definitely sink a few more hours into it by myself anyway.

Last time I participated for Metaphor selected another Atlus game. Cannot do the same so will try to feature at least one (maybe 4?) french game, however already played Plague Tale (both) (and Steelrising), so need some research first.

Copy pasta of copy pasta of endless copy pasta.
Hello and welcome to the madness!
The challenge is simple: Play and beat any 6 games, starting today, that have been featured in any given Humble Monthly/Choice bundle in two months.
The prize: 2x Clair Obscur: Expedition 33
Note: This means I'm giving away two copies of the game and will have 2 winners.
Game length does not matter and I'm not looking for 100% achievement runs. So long as you play and beat 6 games, I'm happy. You can go easy mode and play a bunch of 1h games or go crazy and play 6 +30h games. So long as they were in a monthly at a given point, it is all good.
Just post a comment with either screenshots/ achievements showing that you fulfilled the criteria and I'll add you on Steam and give you the link. Feel free to share your thoughts on the games you've played, but it is not required.
FAQ:
Why you doing this?
I hate money. That and I realized I've been subbed to the monthly for over nine years (yes it has been that long, I checked) and it occurred to me that I've barely touched the games I've gotten from it, let alone played them. Figured the same would be true for a few others, so I figured this is a good way to change that. A sensible person would probably unsub in this situation, but please refer to the beginning as to why that will not happen.
I've played the first X minutes of a game, can I pick it for the event?
No. You cannot have any play time or achievements prior to the start of the event. The only exception is idle time from farming Steam cards.
Can I play a MP only game?
No. It needs to have an "end" in order for me to count it as beaten, so it needs to have a campaign/story mode.
If a game was sold as a non-Steam copy in a bundle (origin/uplay/drm-free/etc), can I pick it as a choice if I own a Steam copy?
No. The reason being that those who own a Steam copy would have an extra option that would not be available to everyone who bought the same bundle. If the game was originally sold as a non-Steam copy, but Humble later provided steam keys to everyone who bought the bundle, then the game would be allowed.
Why six games?
The first few monthlies had 6/7 games in them so I went with that.
How long are you going to do this?
Until my credit card statements gives me nightmares.
This event "ends" on August 5th when the next next HB Choice releases, though the giveaway itself will end the day after. If you manage to finish game number six in between that time, feel free to post, but know that I cannot guarantee that I'll be able to give you the link in time.
Good luck, have fun and stay safe.
Thanks for reading, and enjoy the view.

Sorry again for the late thread. The start time of the event will match the bundle release date.
