I was wondering if it isn't a bit harsh to ban somebody for 4 days because they accidently won the same game/DLC twice. My bf singed up for all the smaugs treasure DLC's (As did I) because we wanted it. He won it, by accident, twice. Both givers had send him the codes as well already. He didn't want too but the RNG gods decided that because just about 50 ppl signed up for those, he needed two. Since regifting is illegal he gave me the second one. Result: he got banned for 4 days.

Can anybody explain to me what he should have done? This sounds a bit harsh to me. It's not that he was delibratly cheating.

I think it should be 7 days

It's actually 5, but as soon as you apply the suspension, it's 4 days, 23 hours, 59 minutes, 59 seconds... which the site shows as "4 days".

But yeah, the site's bizarre display policies take some getting used to, for giveaways as well.

Personally I wouldn't want to reroll if the steam key had already been sent to the previous winner because I think under the current rules you would get in trouble if the key had been used =/

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

In that case, winner could have created a support ticket himself explaining the situation.

In case second winner (after reroll) would say it is not a legit key, I am sure support can help further with that.

But not doing a reroll will probably mean a reroll in the future, or a bda feeling after somebody has given a nice game (which happened to me on one of my more recent giveaways). And that does feel kinda harsh to be honest, seeing someone with a double win get the game you feel others (more honest folks) deserve more.

Doesn't support take at least 2 weeks to get a response?

Depends on what kind of ticket it is. Rerolls are usually handled pretty fast in my experience, of course it might be different if it is not from a GA you created, but won instead.

Also, if that would be the case, just don't select either option in the 'Received Gift?' menu after the 7 days.

+1, says it all!

A four-day-ban isn´t "harsh".. he broke the rules, maybe without meaning any harm, but 4 days is a "pat on the fingers" and not a serious punishment. No need to feel bad about himself or feel like an outcast criminal or anything.. its a simple mistake, the rules are the rules, and four days is like saying "allright, just dont do it again".

Don't do what again? Win twice? How, exactly, did he ensure that he broke the rules? "Broke the rules" implies he did something that resulted in the rules being broken. Entering giveaways is allowed and he has no control over the "winning" part.

It's one thing to be selected as a winner as two giveaways.

It's another thing to accept both keys and mark them both as received.

As a safety feature, would the site consider an option (or default behavior) that would remove you from all similar giveaways when you win a giveaway? In other words, if you win Death Rally, then any entries you have in any other active Death Rally are automatically removed.

If that is too complicated, then perhaps an option to trigger an automatic re-roll if you win a giveaway for a game that you already have an open win for?

If you enter giveaways for bundle fodder, it is quite possible to enter 20 giveaways for the same game that may all be resolved in the hours between your log-ins.

Worse, bundle fodder are giveaways that tend to be keys. Once you send someone a key, you cannot be sure that they won't activate it or give it away. That makes it risky to try to give the same key to another person, even if the original (double winning) recipient promises to not use it.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

It isn't done, as there are the occasional fake giveaways. How would you feel if you were removed from a high odds private because you won a public that was later discovered to be fake?

In my case, I removed my own entries after winning a copy of Saints Row IV, that was later deleted as a Fake, and could have remained in a 9 entry giveaway.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Making it a user-settable option would allow people to opt out of the behavior (and explicitly acknowledge any extra responsibility that might incur.)

Allowing people to win multiple giveaways has its positives and negatives just as preventing it does. Fakes are annoying, and the idea of missing out on a real giveaway because you won a fake one is annoying. But the issue of emailing keys is also real. There are also generally more minor issues like potential inconvenience of time wasted, if a double winner perhaps takes a day or two to notify a gifter that a re-roll is in order.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Once you marked you gift as received, I agree that it should automatically remove you from other giveaways for the same game. Not until then though, because if you win a fake giveaway and the gifter doesn't deliver, you still need to be able to win another one.

A games that you have won and received should also be marked as owned on your account, whether it's in your library or not. It would prevent regifter to enter again for the same game.

Whilst #2 and #3 are pretty straightforward, #1 would not apply if the winner doesn't have the game/DLC already or had not won/marked as received already.

In case of multiple wins they should always reject the duplicate(s).

He might have asked for a re-roll for one of giveaways, if it wasn't about steam codes. But since both steam codes were shown to him, I suppose, there was not much to do.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Of course there is. Just not use the code you got from the person you are asking to do a reroll. Sure, that person does noet have the guarantue it is not used, but it can go through support in that case, if you just think like, hey, free 2nd key, there is only one explanation. Which is, receiver broke the rules.

Comment has been collapsed.

yeah I don't like this rule either... it once happened to me but I was at my computer so I wrote the second GA author to not send the key and re-roll so I avoided punishment but if I was somewhere else I would get suspended... I think the giveaway authors should check the winners before they send anything so this could be avoided but I'm not sure if the win is displayed on somebody's profile before he marks the gift as received...

edit: I misread actually :) if he gave you the second code, he broke the rules... he should deny the code and ask the GA author for re-roll

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

That's difficult because nobody can see what someone else won before they've clicked 'received' or 'not received.' It's not against the rules to initially win the same thing twice, it's against the rules to accept both gifts/keys

Win is not displayed on profile, until the gift is marked as received.
Also, it is very risky to re-roll key, which was sent to someone before.

Permalink

If the new winner says the key doesn't work, I'd have the person who was rerolled against make good on the gift. The gifter held a giveaway, the person who messed it up should deal with it or take the ban for entering for something you already own.

But the System messed it up. Its not the Winners fault that he wins a Game in the Same Time twice...

reroll? I never won anything here. I know the rules but never read anything about how to reroll. And how do you even do that after being kicked out of your account?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Let's imagine you have won 2 copies of the same game. You get the first one for your account, the second one you have to give back to the giveaway creator and ask him to make a re-roll (it's pretty easy: he just presses a button and the system chooses another winner)

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Actually the giveaway creator doesn't "just press a button". When you click the link to request a new winner it takes you to a form to fill out where you have to provide a valid reason for wanting a new winner. Support members will review it and issue a reroll if your reason is valid.

Sorry to be kind of anal but I want to make sure any new user viewing this thread doesn't think that you can reroll your giveaways yourself for any reason you want.

I guess it might have occurred to either of you to contact one of the giveaway creators and request a reroll. But it was way easier to use both keys, right? Why is that any different than trading the second game or selling it for profit?

If anything, a 4-day suspension is quite a bit on the lenient side. Coming back to nag about it would easily warrant a few more.

Best of luck in the future though. I truly do believe in rehabilitation.

He should've asked for a reroll on the giveaway that ended second. According to the rules, you can't win the same game twice. If you enter a bunch of GAs of the same game, and win in one of them, you have to cancel your entry to the ones that didn't end yet.
It happened to me once, I won the same game twice in two GAs that ended at the same time. And I requested a reroll on one of them and everything went smoothly.
