My husband was talking to me about how he wants games with better AI. However, he also says that he likes games with zombies. Maybe it is because I am relatively new to core gaming, but this seems like an impossibility. Since zombies do not have any brains, they cannot be smart. Additionally, if you want a smart games, than you cannot have zombies. The way I see it, you can have one or the other, but not both. Can somebody explain to me what is the deal wanting these two conflicting ideas?

Stubbs the Zombie in Rebel without a Pulse. You are a zombie, fighting against humans, and you even have some limited squad control if I remember correctly (but I haven't played for several years, so my memory might be off).

Same here, wish I still had my copy. Not available in Steam at this point either, which is a shame.

Got this one on a daily deal just before it got pulled from Steam. It's a fun game, although it gets a little samey after a while.

Zombies can be "smart" (as in better AI. It means better pathfinding, attacking in hordes, etc.

killing floor has zombies that each act differently. its a less team-oriented survival horror compared to left 4 dead and every type of zombie acts differently. this could fit his desire

AI in games controls behaviour of creatures and the AI doesn't act as a brain, acts like a creature should behave, it's more of a behaviour controller but it's more easily called AI and just be done with it.
Even if zombies don't have brains, they act like rabbid animals so the AI must control them accordingly, without AI they would just be props.

L4D2 has special zombies that have special abilities but also coordinate with each other and are able to make use of the maps choke points. Also LFD2 lets you play as those special zombies, so while they may not be AI they are smart and well organized.

Maybe someone should create a "Zombie chess" game (with Fritz engine inside). A game that has both brain and zombies :)

Zombies can be as feral and instinctive as animals, and a game can always do what, for example, L4D did with its' specials - they all have unique strengths / weaknesses, and behavior that matches that. Smokers and spitters are elusive and try to avoid confrontations, for example. I get what you're saying about zombies and all, and part of what makes zombies so cool is their brainless, relentless shambling, but a decent zombie game wouldn't just have those base kinds of zombies alone anyway. Also, even though he might like both, they can both be in different games, right? Better AI and more zombies? Or hey, what about a game with smart opponents AND the shambling undead? :D

Better does not have to mean smarter, it can just be more realistic.

He should play the original F.E.A.R, not a zombie game but the A.I is great.
