I just bought 3DS XL with monster hunter pre loaded. I also bought a hard case that brought a soft cloth and screen protectors.
I'm normally very careful with my portables. Both my gameboy collar and advance have very little scratches on the screen.
Should I use the screen protectors?

Of course you should, it has a touchscreen, which you will be touching a lot :)

I use them even when not needed. Old habits die hard with newfangled tech.

You owe it to yourself to get Kid Icarus now that you own a 3DS. Brilliant game.

Not sure about 3DS XLs, but with the old one, it's another safety measure to put the cleaning cloth between the screens when not using the console (at least my friend's doing so). Nintendo messed up with (IIRC) the bottom screen (its frame to be exact) even scratching the top one if you're unlucky.

Hopefully it was fixed in XL, but I'm not sure...

thanks for the interesting advice. I did notice that since the upper screen is larger then the bottom screen that the upper one might get scratched. I'll be doing what you suggested :D

I second this statement. I didn't do that on my 3DS regular, and it got a nice little imprint of the bottom screen on the top from riding in my backpack to and from campus. A cleaning cloth, or the foam it was packed in, stopped it though.

Also, screw screen protectors, they mess with my experience.

I've always hated using screen protectors. No idea why. :P

If you want it to last? Yeah why not. I have the original digitizer on my near launch DS, I've only used protectors on the lower screen.

On the other hand I did change the entire upper shell due to a crack due to it being dropped from a table by a cat so there's that, but the screen was pristine.

I never understood why people needed the DS and 3DS screen protectors so much. I've had my DS phat for 9 years and used the touch pad quite a bit, yet don't have a single scratch. I could understand for non-clamshell designs like the Game Boys and PSP, but still.

I never used one on my DS and have 0 scratches after 3+ years.

They just make the screen look worse imo.
