My current setup can barely run any games on medium to high so this will be a huge upgrade for me. I can't seem to decide on these two cards. 7970 is appealing because it comes with Bioshock Infiniite but other than that, I don't know.

I also plan to get an i5 3570k and a new motherboard.

I currently have a radeon 6850 and phenom ii x4 925 (2.8 GHz).

edit: BTW, I just bought a 27" monitor and someone below said the 7970 is choppy so that's going to be pretty noticeable on a large screen. Is that really true? Can you provide some proof?

Benchmarks show the 7970 better than the GTX 670, and I believe that it comes with Bioshock, like you mentioned, and some other game(s), so I would go for that.

Wait until June.

The 8xxx series come out then, which means the 7xxx series will drop in price. That's what I'm doing :)

+1, your 6850 is probably still quite beasty, enough to wait for the next series... In the mean time you could consider upgrading your Phenom processor to something like 965 Black Edition, instead of an i5, saves you from having to buy a new motherboard. Although i5 may be 30-40% better than the 965, while 965 is almost half the price and with proper cooling can be overclocked nicely.

I'm running a 6870 and it still plays all of the latest games just fine. So its still okay :)

As for the upgrades without having to replace the mobo... +1

That's not a bad idea. Maybe I'll do that.

I'd take 7970 if it's GHz edition.

Why?
I heard the 7970 is pretty overclockable already, and even it's not the GHZ edition it's still better.

But a 670 isn't better than a 7970.

The thing is: EVGA

What about EVGA? A brand doesn't make a difference when it comes to GPU models.
Never really used their cards, but I know 2-3 people who used their cards in the past and disliked it.

gtx 670 if you pair it with the Intel Core i5-3570k

Why? You don't gain any performance gains if you do.

7970 is equal to 680, so 7970 is obviously better than 670. Also you get 2 free games Crysis 3 and Bioshock Infinite, very good deal.
