Hi community!
I'm looking for a cheap gaming laptop, for around 500€. Is it possible to buy a good one at that price?

If you just want a good laptop which can run most games decently, then yes. But a gaming computer, even as an assembled desktop, would cost more then twice.

The 860M is decent for many games at mid to high level. If you want to run modern games at the best resolutions and frame rates, you definitely need a 950M at the very least.

But, the 860M has really good benchmarks... and it's less expensive, obviously.

+1 gaming laptop are pricey & no where good as a desktop but I guess easier to move about

A laptop MADE for gaming? No.

However, there are plenty of laptops that can handle some hefty games. My wife has a Dell, not sure of the exact model, which costed about $300 USD (I believe that converts to like 250 Euros), and it can play games like Left 4 Dead 2, Tomb Raider 2013, Outlast, etc., and all on medium to high settings.

Not bad for the price. If you want a laptop that can handle new new games, like GTA V or DOOM or Dark Souls III, then sadly, you'll probably need at least 1,000 Euros :/

There are concerns other than hardware too. I too bought a nice Dell laptop for gaming (I paid rather more than that to get something with a decent graphics card). Turns out that while the components are willing the design is weak: the computer is terrible at disipating heat. Intensive applications run for very long put it in danger of shutting off. I don't dare run most 3D games and must scrupulously keep the ports clean or even Fez will cause it to overhear (it did).

It turns out others had this issue, and reviews could have warned me. Just keep in mind, there's more to iit than just the specs of the system.

It depends on what games you are willing to play on it:

  • If you plan on playing some indie/low-resource games (e.g. The Binding Of Isaac, Awesomenauts, Telltale games...) I guess you could find something in that range that handles them pretty well.

  • If you plan on playing some AAA/high-end games (e.g. The Witcher, The Division, Battlefront...) I'm afraid you will probably need a bigger budget, around 900$ and up from there.

I personally have a pretty similar laptop to this one and it can handle almost everything, but most AAA games need to be played on medium-low settings at 1080p, the FPS drop is too hard past that point with a mobile graphics card and 8 gigs of RAM.

I hope it was at least little bit helpful, have a nice day!

I want to play Rainbow Six Siege, Mad Max, Fallout 4, The Witcher 3, Far Cry 4, with medium settings at least and some indie games.

I'm afraid that falls into the second category so I'd say you need to spend around 900$-1000$ minimum to get a decent package to run those games. I however agree with the other comments about building your own desktop PC.

Do you plan to move around/travel a lot? Are you going to use the laptop as your main machine or as a secondary tool? You should carefully think about all that since building a desktop by yourself with the exact same parts as a laptop of your choice will be more powerful and also way cheaper.

My 2cents :

Laptop and gaming doesn't go well combined. Laptop are usually more expansive and perform less for the same price counterpart of a desktop PC.

For that price is almost impossible to get anything good even if you were assembling a Desktop.

However if you need it because you travel a lot, you could tell us what you want to play and with which setting so we could help better.
If you don't need it because of whatever reason a desktop is way better.

Check newegg.com. They usually start at around $700 and go to about $2500.
NewEgg Gaming Laptops
I dont think Newegg ships internationally unless you were to go through a parcel forwarder but at least you can get an idea of whats available.

Got a Dell Inspiron 3542(GeForce 840M 1GB,8 GB RAM, Core i7 4th) for ~400$ and I can run everything I want to play except the new AAA games like Arkham Knight and Mad Max, having less than 30 FPS is uncomfortable to play =d

If you want to play games, I'd suggest you to build a desktop computer, not a laptop.

If you want the laptop, choose wisely, you need a decent cooling system and a GPU, Intel Core i5 3rd+ generation, 4 GB RAM+, and not a bad display, pay attention to weight and display resolution, how long can battery work on a high performance mode etc.

Also take a look at the "cooling holes" because if they are under the laptop and you need to play on a table, they can end up blocked which will overheat all the parts...

You can buy a special additional thing to a laptop if it has its holes below(?) =d

+1 on attending to the cooling setup. I have a somewhat newer Dell Inspiron and have had a ton of cooling issues. (see above)

If you're looking to play games that demand powerful hardware, I'd say you should look for a PC and possibly even used screen to meet that price. I advise you check www.systemrequirementslab.com to find the most demanding game you're looking and choose computer parts according to it's system requirements. You should pick slightly more powerful parts than listed for the PC will be more future proof.

You can get decent performance on older games like Witcher 1 or port like Final Fantasy X but would see horrible FPS on newer games like Witcher 3.

Just make sure you pick laptop with dedicated GPU. There should be variety of laptop within that range with dedicated GPU (probably AMD), but it's better than integrated ones like Intel HD.

This is a really good answer, totally agree with it. I personally recommend looking for the ones with Nvidia M GPUs (mobile series of their desktop cards), AMD usually makes terrible graphic cards ports for laptops.

I might be possible but it won't be able to run newer games perfectly. Or just run games which don't need the high specs. Should be fine.

I can recommend this one (I have It since a year I like it :) )
It's ASUS's cheapest gamer notebook
It can run today's AAA titles on mid graphics but you need more money for this one

ASUS ROG GL552JX
Display: 15.6'' 1080p LED Matte
Processor: Intel Core i7-4720HQ (2.6 - 3.6 Ghz)
RAM: 8Gb DDR3
VGA: NVidia GeForce GTX 950M (4Gb VRAM, DDR3, Dx12)
HDD: 1Tb
full Windows 10 compatible

For that price you could get a decent laptop that can run most low demand games. However, if you want to run game that have higher demands (so about every AAA game from 2013 or later) you will have to pay more then that. If you really want a laptop, you will come close to 1000 bucks, if not more. A desktop can be cheaper then that, so unless you really want a laptop, go for a desktop.

At best, and if you're lucky you might be able to get a refurbished or used laptop with a 930m for that kind of price. Benchmarks can be found here if you scroll down. They put those in quite a lot of Toshiba Satellite models, they're in some HP Envy's and at the cheap end Medion Akoya laptops.

For new, it will probably have to be a 920m. Benchmarks here. You could get an Acer Aspire E5-573G or some of the ones off here for that kind of money.

Can be tricky to find a good or even reasonable performing laptop for a budget price. You're going to struggle to run the latest games. I remember when I got back into gaming in winter 2011, Skyrim had come out, I needed a new laptop anyway and wanted to play it. Didn't have much of a budget and ended up getting a refurbed Dell from their official site with a scratched case that made it cheaper for £330 which is about €400. Spent absolutely ages putting research in and trawling websites to find that.

Edit: Another thing you could do is look at youtube vids running different games on different laptop cards. Obviously that comes with a warning that sometimes people are BS'ing about the settings they're running the game at or even which GPU they're using.

Got back into gaming, and don't worry, I'm old too! Lost interest for most of the 2000s outside of playing FIFA and Champ Manager. Prior to that I loved it. Spent those years getting married, getting divorced, getting drunk, playing poker and watching a lot of football. Gaming took a backseat for a while.

500 euros... I would highly recommend a desktop for you, but you will need to learn to build it or have someone else help you with it, it's not THAT hard anyway :] And a 500 desktop will most likely wipe the floor with a 800 euros laptop (or even more expensive).

But the advantages of upgradability and buying used (very good) parts is unparalleled! I just hope you don't need the portability of a laptop... for some kind of reference at what parts to aim for an specific total budget check Logical Increments as a reference, but don't necessarily go for the part models listed there, you can do much better or cheaper in most cases and you can mix up parts from different tiers depending on your upgrade route in the future.

Find someone with 4-8 GB RAM and an i3-6100U or i5-6300U. Their iGPUs can handle a lot of games on low/medium settings, especially in windowed 720p on Win10.

Personally, I prefer to game on a laptop because I only want one machine to carry to school for schoolwork and to game at home. Laptops are very viable machines for people who have the money. Obviously OP is on a budget therefore he cannot get one that can run the newest games, but to say that laptops "are not meant to play games on" is rather elitist and just plain wrong.

On that range the only gaming laptops worth it have a 940M or a 940MX - and both of these are plagued by memory bandwidth.
950M and better GPUs have GDDR5 instead of DDR3, and the performance gains make it absolutely worth it assuming you can save up and go somewhat higher than your current price range allows.

OP wasn't asking for 4K VR capabilities. He was asking for a gaming laptop that is priced around 500 euros. Which is exactly what I've linked.

Sure, it's not gonna run games in 4K, it's not gonna run them on ULTRA FUCKING DETAILS. But it's gonna run most games at low-medium settings. At 500 euros, more than half of the responding pricks suggested a PC. Way to give the guy a hand.

The internet is full of elitist pricks when it comes to gaming.

it wont even be able to run most games on low quality at its default display resolution of 1080,he would have to set it to 720 just to run a game at low settings the 940M gpu is a multimedia gpu not a gaming gpu furthermore the hard drive used in the system is so slow that he would have long ass loading screens,he could do much better building a desktop or buying a used laptop with better specs.
here is a half decent build for under the $500 mark, and with this he can upgrade it as he gets more money to spend on it.

we are all just trying to help the OP get a good system together for gaming no need to resort to name calling:)

He's asking for a laptop. Not a desktop. How are you helping by providing a different solution to a problem?

P.S. Please stop linking desktop computers that do not have at least a keyboard and a SCREEN. Both of which are included in the price of a laptop. It's like selling cars without wheels.

Were giving him alternatives for something that will actually be able to play current games for a $500 price tag,he says he wants to play witcher 3 and fallout 4 at medium settings how is listing a laptop that would be lucky to run ether of those games on low helping him any better, were at least telling him something that could run those games at those settings for his budget,as far as a Keyboard he can get one for $20 about anywhere and can use a tv as a monitor for gaming like most people do these days using HDMI that im guessing he likely already has.

Obviously if he only has 500 euros to get a new rig he already owns a HDMI-ready Full HD TV. A $20 keyboard is probably gonna last him less than a month, have ghosting issues, and whatnot. Not to mention audio, mouse, and other necessities.

Sure, your linked PC is great. For 30 extra bucks he can even cram in the new 480. But does it blend?

I had an Alienware M11X, the first version of the M11X that was produced. Yes I know that Alienware PC's are overhyped and that they are supposedly not as good as they were before the company was bought out by Dell, but I wanted a gaming PC and with the living situation that I had at the time, I was constantly on the go and constantly setting up and tearing down a desktop was just not feasible so it was laptop or nothing. I shopped around for awhile and went with the M11X because at the time it was the best value that I could find in terms of performance for the price.

It ended up being a huge mistake and two years later, when I built my next desktop after my living situation became more stable, I sold it as-is on eBay for less than half of what I paid for it; not too bad considering a couple of years had passed but it never was what I had hoped it would be. It overheated constantly, to the point that I could not safely run it without using an external fan. It would get so hot that it would shut down and after awhile I was worried that every time I would play a game, with or without the external fan, that I was risking burning it up completely. I became so worried that I didn't even want to play games on it anymore, and it became more of a movie streaming device. Also the hinge on one side began splitting open almost immediately after the manufacturer's warranty expired, and dust and other particles started getting in behind the plastic that was covering the actual LCD panel. I know because of the size the manufacturer had fewer options and space to work with when it came to cooling for the system, but when I told a co-worker I had at the time, he put the whole issue into perspective, and while I can't remember his exact words, he basically said that laptops and gaming don't really mix. Unless you are constantly on the go (like you have a job where you are living out of hotel rooms or in the cab of an 18-wheeler) I would advise against getting a laptop for gaming. If semi-portability interests you think about getting or building a desktop in a LAN-party style case. And myself personally, I'm in between actual gaming rigs and I'm currently using a portable desktop called the Kangaroo. It is a full fledged Windows 10 PC but it's the size of a cellphone. I can play Delver and some of the roguelikes I like to play but it isn't much for gaming, I just bought it because it was 100 USD and is getting me by until I can afford to build my next rig. If that interests you at all, until you can save up more money, it's only for sale on the Microsoft Store and NewEgg. https://www.microsoftstore.com/store/msusa/en_US/pdp/InFocus-Kangaroo-Signature-Edition-Mobile-Desktop/productID.328073600

If you really really have to get a gaming laptop, I'd wait until you can buy one of those behemoth ASUS gaming laptops, but again just think about how much less it would cost to build a desktop with more power.

No problem man. It's a huge decision and it's something you're gonna spend hundreds if not thousands of hours using. I really don't wanna see anyone repeat the same mistake that I made. Fortunately when the time came to replace my laptop with a desktop I ended up getting deals and employee discounts and accommodations from where I was working and what I ended up with was a retail desktop that was a discontinued "media center" model with a MSRP of 960 USD for $250, which ironically was the amount that I got from the sale of the M11X. And then I ended up throwing the mobo, blu-ray drive, HDD and along with everything else in a new case (a very simple looking, but sturdy, steal case by NZXT that retails for 50 bucks), upgraded the PSU(Corsair IIRC that was heavily discounted), GPU(got a used Nvidia 470 for free which was still decent in 2010/2011), and RAM (paid 30 dollars for four 4GB sticks of RAM) for next to nothing, and basically got a new system for practically nothing. I emerged from the whole ordeal basically unscathed. I got really really lucky and the odds of all of that working out the way it did were extremely unlikely.
So I figure I kinda owe it to other people to pass on the experience I had, not only because I got lucky and found a really great deal at just the right time, but because other people out there might not get so lucky. Not everyone can get the money for a new PC together very often or easily and getting burned when you spend every penny you have on something that you need to last for a long time really sucks.
