Hello adventurer,

Here's something to keep you busy looking forward and maybe we can all learn a few things about our favorite distribution system. Something you have been doing on Steam that not a lot of people do and think they should.

If it's not Steam-related, maybe something that makes the gaming experience on the platform better. So anything from tools, extensions, Windows features, or hardware you might use. Feel free to share videos if you fancy. I like watching stuff and learning new things.

I'll go first. get yourself people or family you trust and link up via Family Sharing. You'll save yourself a tone of money because 1 copy can be used across all other accounts and if you're a hoarder like myself, you'll have every single member satisfied playing a different game without knocking you out of your game, unless you bought the newest, nicest stuff out there. It's by far my favorite feature of the platform and it's a way I can give to my family games, saving them a fortune.

I guess ill share 2 such things:
Games that hate you Steam Curator
It even shares if they need an additional launcher or if it needs to be constantly online 🤮
HLTB integration Script
IMO it's way better than Augmented Steam becz it's right on top. 💖
It's helpful for me to discern if ill play a game by judging its plot summary, screenshots, review percentage and HLTB time at a quick glance. Thus, potentially helping me waste less time cz I can decide if X game really deserves 30 hours of my life or not.

Although I'm not bothered by such things, but it's a great to have this.

I believe Augmented Steam (see RobbyRatpoison's comment below) also adds HLTB (How Long to Beat) information to Steam pages, among other useful stuff.

Yea I'm aware, mentioned it on my comment as well😅

I actually have both installed, but have never once scrolled below to check Augmented Steam's HLTB. I find it a bit too inconveniently placed and in smaller font. If I want further HLTB data i click on the counter placed by the userscript, opening HLTB website. I usually do so to check the degree of differences in how different users vote their completion time. As It helps me ascertain how slow I would likely go. ( I usually always take longer than the standard HLTB timeಥ‿ಥ)

HLTB script is neat... but it seems to only show main story time, would be nice if it showed all 3.

As a Completionist, all I care is the completion aspect.

Strange how the script is implemented. Tampermonkey itself warned me it wanted to use an external url...
nothing wrong, he will fetch hltb i tought...
...but he asks for 2 urls. Before hltb it sends something to... this url:
umadb.ro

Entering the url is even more worrysome, as its a meme like someone trolling the visitor.

Im no coder(but i dabbled/tried in the past)- looking at the scripts code i cant see anything obviously bad; Idk if im looking right or wrong at things but its as if the steamapi id or hltb key are being fetched from that 'u mad bro' url instead of hltb itself, before querying HLTB for the time.

But even if the code itself isnt doing anything bad on its own(and i cant really tell) whatever is going at said url could. I know malicious actors do such things as fetching things from external sources that include malicious code. Like its going for one particular data that is the right one (ex: hltb api key) but what is delivered is like (malicious code)'key'(malicious code) in a such a way the javascript will read part of the data as code to run

Good eye!

// Define URLs
let fetchUrl = 'https://umadb.ro/hltb/fetch.php';
let hltbUrl = "https://howlongtobeat.com";

Am also unsure what it means. I get a feeling that it's just a spare website the coder has, they might have made a mini section for this script. The word API and the code written in that 1 sentence there, makes me think it's some sort of identifier or call back request they needed (fetchurl) for the script to work. So they placed it in their website. But this is an assumption.
I'll try to reach the developer of this script on discord, to ask about it.

I imagined something like that too

But damn what an url to choose huh? I wouldnt have noticed if Tampermonkey didnt warn me it was asking for an url wich is a fair warning - then said url is a joke.. not just any joke but the type hackers loved to do back in the 90s-2000s. Like the trolling virus "I Love You" and such. Its the perfect url for a victim to find(after being infected), to go there and realize they were screwed

HLTB doesn't provide an official public API, so people have come up with various ways to get around that...

That explains a lot. I use Playnite and the hltb extension gets updated constantly, apparently trying to jump through a bunch of hoops to make it work(until it breaks few weeks later)

Augmented Steam adds useful links to store pages and user profiles, quick sell button for inventory items, and click to reveal hidden achievements (and probably more but that's what I use it for)
https://augmentedsteam.com/

Playnite is a multi platform launcher with interface customization and extensions. I import games from Steam, Epic, GOG and Origin to have my whole PC library available in one place. It also supports other platforms like Battle.net and Uplay and itch.io and Rockstar Launcher. I can mark games as beaten or completed when I beat or 100% them. I use the Duplicate Hider extension to only show Steam version of games that I own on multiple platforms. I also use the StartPage extension customized to show my library the way I want to see it (installed, recently released, recently added to library, and some random games with no playtime)

Can't go wrong with that extension.

Despite loving it, I don't find myself using it as much as I game primarily on Steam. I do think it's a great alternative to GoG that sometimes bugs out.

I wish there was a Map Genie plugin for the Steam overlay and Big Picture mode.

It would make life much easier when tracking progress in games.

Very cool maps for lots of games, particularly useful for marking which parts of the map you've already visited/finished, and seeing anything you might be missing. I found it super useful for Fallout 4 and RDR2, but I'm also the kind of person that wants to make sure every part of the map is visited and each collectible is picked up.

Unfortunately you have to pay to get full access to tracking, with a free account you're quite limited but at least can view everything.

Cool! So having this as maybe a community-made feature as part of the guides could work. A free version is always welcome.

True.

It's 9,99 dollars per year.

There's an extension on GitHub that lets you get the paid features for free.

But yeah, use it at your own risk, as I don't know if it's completely safe.

If you pay the annual fee, you get access to lots of interactive maps, which allow you to track progress in games.

This is especially useful for games with lots of collectibles that are not shown inside the in-game map.

This way you can finish your game quicker, as you don't have to go all over the place looking for things and bumping into them by accident.

You can more easily set a location in the in-game map and just go there.

The current game I'm using this for, is Assassin's Creed: Director's Cut (I've already used it to Black Myth: Wukong and God of War, but didn't finish these games).

I'm finishing AC1, right after that, most likely I'll play Ghost of Tsushima and eventually buy Rise of the Ronin later, if I manage to afford it.

Today's my 34th birthday, but yeah, so far, no luck with any particular giveaway in here.

It would be nice to get Rise of the Ronin (we'll see, if will depend on if I receive something from family today or not).

I have money for it, but I gotta be very careful with it, as I need to cover my music lessons and other expenses first, only then gaming and entertainment can come into play as a purchase decision/move, as money it's kind of tight (I have enough to cover the music lessons and bank comission expenses: then I'll eventually have money for 1 or 2 good AAA games, depending on how I use it).

I'll try to see what I can do, to get a reliable source of income and try to buy myself some games and give back to the community.

Thanks 😊👍

Augmented Steam allows for custom buttons on the Steam app page below the ITAD button. This way, I can find the game on GG.Deals, Barter.vg and SteamGifts with one click each.

Steam Inventory Helper

It helps sell your card on the Steam market. It can auto-sell steam inventory items on their current value or for more/less. It is good for selling common cards and TF2 in mass. But try to avoid selling rarer cards with it as they tend to be worth more after the few cheap ones sold. It is a little bit ad heavy so I always turn it off when I don't want to use it.

And of course, ASF to help you farm those cards.

fuck me... ive mauneully listed them all 1 at a time 7,452 Market Transactions

made over 100$ off steam card selling tho.

I use Steam Economy Enhancer.
I don't know how it compares to SIH since I never tried that, but SEE does what I need from it. It can list all my cards with a single click.
It's also a userscript rather than an extension, so arguably safer?

very important if you do idling sessions bi-annually for cards before sales(to sell off foils/trade dupes)

still remember my first big idle session... boot up idlemaster.... suddenly get asked WTF I am doing because apparently steam spammed people with 30+ carenard is now playing X game popups.

Yes, the advice is great, but not very relevant for players who participate in MiM , like myself. I don't really want to accumulate time in idle and then explain to CJ that I have never touched the game.

A good way to combat this issue is to turn Notifcations off or set yourself in Do Not Disturb. It's what I do to get notified I get a message and respond at my own time. I have had chat messages coming in, didn't notice it and was not aware or forgot to respond.

Grab Free Games - Steam Only
Grab Free Games - All Platforms

These two groups. If you subscribe to the notifications you'll get steam notifications when a game is free to play. You can pick whichever just steam, or all platforms which includes, steam, epic, gog, etc. just don't forget to sub if you want the notification But basically instead of getting a notification for a friend request or something you get one every Thursday that there's a free game on epic games. I tend to be forgetful so it helps me out.

PS: Steam has messed a little bit with the notification system so sometimes I get the notification late, but it still works.

I also use some of the above but they've been mentioned already.

Steam game sharing works but is limited. Better than not having it, of course.

Your achievements are only displayed for a few days after you stop launching the game, 2 weeks I think. And you can't compare them to a friend's because you don't own the game.

If you go to my profile, I was able to put God of War into my perfect games panel, but I can't see ANY stats about it (achievements, dates, play time). It is a game from a shared library so after you stop playing it you lose access to these stats (they are saved though if you buy the game or lunch it again).

I played other games like Horizon Zero Dawn and there is no record of them unless I buy them.

Comment has been collapsed.

Glad to know those details. I agree that the feature is not perfect and sometimes I want 1 or 2 more extra spaces to add a few more people. I normally prefer to buy the game despite having it from someone else from my family members as if there are 2 or more copies, means that more people can play and use them and I like to own the games I play. I am also worried more about achievements than not being able to display them. It's something I'm deeply proud of.

Steam overlay now is extra usefful.
Notes function even accept screenshots and notes can even be pinned, apearing floating over the top of whatever game.
URls can also be saved (useuful sites, wikis etc) and url in notes open in the overlays own browser, all through the overlay

Steams overlay browser also allow for bookmarks, they exist per game. Clicking new tab will show all bookmarks made via the browser for that particular game

and theres the fancy steam recorder and clip editor i personally dont use but are really cool too
