You would have made headlines.

Bring me some Surströmming if you ever come to Australia.

Sweden -> Australia, most flights go through Dubai airport, and that might be cause for concern. They would likely not take as kindly to me carrying something that can potentially explode, even if the chances of it happening are really small, and I've taken precautions so that if it actually explodes, there will be minimal to no damage.

Hey, I was going to say this. You have broken my hearth ;_;

As I was 13 years old I brought one pallet Red Bull (24 cans) from a gas station in Austria to Germany (we was on the way home from vacation).
Back then it was forbidden to bring Red Bull into Germany. Luckily we passed the german border without customs inspection.
As we arrived at home, I told my parents that Red Bull is strictly banned in Germany. ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
But times change and later it was possible to buy it everywhere. Legal! :D

Let me think... the only foreign countries I visited were Vatican City and San Marino, but given that they're enclaves, I don't think that would count as crossing Italy's borders...
So, the strangest thing I carried was... a nail clipper, most probably...

Oh, I feel you mate! I was confiscated a can of mackerel in spicy tomato sauce at the Heathrow airport :(

When I was 14 or 15 I took a street name sign over the the Welsh/English border after a family holiday. Now that was illegal as I stole it, but it's not in the realms of drug smuggling or gun running etc. The Welsh/English border isn't really a proper border either, but it's the best answer I can come up with.
It was on the ground, and I think a car must have hit it and knocked it out of it's stand. Pic of the type of thing below for reference, but it's not the one I took. The name of the street had a nice ring to it in my opinion. I thought the sign would look good on my wall and act as a souvenir of the trip.

You are the reason we can't have nice things! >:( Shame!
When I've been visiting my family in Slovakia as a kid, we got a ton of chocolate. Regular bars, Milky Way, you name it... The trip was ~150km. In the midst of summer. So we have carried maybe a kilo of liquified chocolate. Still yummy, though.

My aunt and her daughter are in the antiques business. My aunt lives in Normandy where she is restoring a chateau and I had been over there helping out, but I was on my way back for a while and she asked me to carry a bag of antiques with me on the ferry to hand over to my cousin who was trading in the South in the England. I did this, and this and only after the fact discovered that the bag contained various nazi artifacts that had been dug up at Grandcamp-Maisy including a grenade (not live), a bayonet and various swastikas.

A boat made out of seashells when visiting Mumbai. And a 5-gum pack from Florida.
Oh yeah, and a fridge magnet with the shape of a drunk cow when in Andalucía, Spain.
...Holy fuck, I'm a pretty damn boring traveler.

probably a small keg of Jupiler, a Belgian beer (they have the best beers in the world). it was a gift from friends when I visited and it took up about a third of a suitcase. when it went through the x-ray they had to open the case and then the customs official complimented the choice and told me I should've thrown away the rest of my stuff and just gotten more beer
not the most exciting of stories perhaps, but best I've got since the "myself" answer has already been used :P

I went to London with my mom, we flew into Heathrow and our bags were scanned, checked, and sniffed, and we were padded down. My mom had to hand over her lipstick and they checked it for illegal substances...
When we got to the hotel I took off my coat and 3 darts fell out of my inside pocket...

I don't have any good stories to add (I'm pretty boring), but I have to say, I kind of want to try Surströmming.
I had to google the best way to eat it an found, "The most common way to consume surströmming is with tunnbröd (thin bread) which is a soft or crisp very thin bread commonly baked in the north of Sweden. The bread is consumed in Sweden all year. Usually a sandwich is made with surströmming, butter, potatoes, sour cream and diced onion."
That...sounds delicious. I tried to find something describing the taste but came up empty (plenty of videos of people trying and going, "ewwww" though...sigh).

A four pint unmarked plastic container of beer - well strictly speaking my wife did it rather than me. It was whilst we lived in Sri Lanka and although there were some decent bottled beers out there it was a rare treat to have some "proper" beer to drink. Apparently the customs guy was somewhat bemused when she took it through but didn't stop her :) That was in more naive times

Obligatory giveaway
Anyway, inspired by a discussion I had earlier today. What is the strangest thing you've ever taken with you across a border, and why did you do it?
I recently visited Croatia (beautiful country, and there are bakeries everywhere!). On my way there I had a pressurized can of fish with me. Well, that's not quite true, it was a can of fermented fish, where the internal pressure had got to the point where it bulged out heavily. Before going, I was actually reading up on if this was allowed, or if it was something that could get me into trouble, and it turned out to be a big grey area. Some airlines strictly prohibit Surströmming, some don't, and the one I was going by (Ryanair, the only airline actually flying to where I was going) had no mentions of this on their website, so I figured that the worst thing that could happen would be someone confiscating my can of fermented fish.
I did of course consider the risk of the can rupturing due to changes in pressure, and anyone who has ever been near someone opening a can of Surströmming knows that it smells terribly bad. And it's a smell that sticks to your clothes, so in the interest of me not having stinky clothes, and also not ruining everyone else's clothes, the can was wrapped in, if my memory serves, 9 layers of plastic bags, then those were wrapped in a towel to avoid any bumps damaging it. Luckily my fermented fish got across the border without a hitch.
The reason for my stinky pressurized fermented fish was that the person I was visiting had said that they wanted to try Surströmming.
edit And I know I should not have to say this, but no illegal stuff!
