I keep looking at my backlog of games I want to play and finish, and it's just daunting. I'm not sure what to do, as there are many other things to do, but also the amount of backlog is still staring at me. With new games coming out, and other games on the horizon, I'm not sure if i'll ever truly get rid of backlog.

The question for everyone is what is the average amount of time you game?

I'm hoping to limit myself to 3-4 hours per day. But it's really hard to manage my time, I often go over 6 hours per day and I know it's not very healthy.

On a normal week, 3-4 hours a day but I'm starting to reduce that a little bit.

Like 10 hours at the beginning of the year and the summer.
Recently I've only been able to put about 1-2 hours a day with Uni, a new workout plan, and trying to read more. I am just too exhausted in the evenings that I go to bed early instead :/

You will never get rid of your backlog if you stay around... just all the contrary...

Funny you ask that today because I posted last night on the BLAEO group site about my decision to deliberately cut my gaming time to 1 hour a day.
I feel I've neglected my other hobbies and while gaming is fun, I need some down time to read books and make music.

I will agree with this entirely.

I've played the piano for 17 years, but lately I haven't gone to the piano as much as I would like. I'm trying to figure something out at the moment.

Yes, don't give up. I started learning the piano when I was 10 and had lessons for 4 years.
Then I stopped playing for a few years until I got into computer music in 2003. I still play other people's pieces once in a while but making my own music and sounds is what makes me tick.

try playing songs from your games by ear. you just need to get your mind on playing more and you'll be more motivated to do it.

You can't let the backlog get to you. My plan is to work on my backlog when I either

A) win the lottery or
B) retire from my career (in about 25 years)

:)

Much like others, my gaming time is very inconsistent. Some days zero, some days 2 hours, some days 4+ hours. Just depends on what else is going on.

Now that I am doing my internship and have a 40 mins commute, it's around 3 hours max on weekdays (between 19.00-22.00).
Some days it's less (when I am really tired), sometimes not playing at all (mostly Fridays then). Weekends depend, sometimes I play the whole day, sometimes I'm more in for Netflix and snacks. Having no homework makes the weekends so much more relaxed :)

My gaming hours are always inconsistent. Just depends on what I'm doing that day.

Try not to focus on backlog. You'll most likely never beat all the games you own, and more likely continue to add games to your backlog. What I did is make a list of games I want to play the most, and then decided to eventually tackle those games.

After my usual 10-12 hour workday I'm playing 2 hours maximum. That is if I am in the mood and don't have anything important to do. So on working days I'm usually playing shorter games like HOG's because I don't have the nerve for really immersive games. On weekends I'm trying to catch up with my backlog, which is a hopeless undertaking.....

About 3 hours per week.

My biggest secret: I don't give a fig about completing games. I hardly ever play a game that is worth completing. Most games are not good, so I abandon them. The ones that are good, most get redundant and repetitive after about the halfway mark. Enjoyment becomes a game of diminishing returns. Only one in a thousand is worth finishing and even replaying. Those are the gems!

For examples:
Shelter and Shelter 2 - worth firing up and playing long enough to get the mechanics and play through the content for an hour or so. And then, meh - nothing new. No reason to spend another 6-9 hours on it. Only worth playing more if you're really having fun. I wasn't. So I stopped. I enjoyed the parts I played. And I remember the game's visual style and approach to gameplay as novel and thought-provoking. I'm glad the game was made. But I wasn't going to get much more out of it than I had at the hour and a half mark. So I quit without regrets.
Grim Dawn - It captured me. I love the complex, spreadsheety loot and stat tables. I played pretty solidly for a few weeks until a had a good build and I played up to Level 50. Then I took a break. Was doing some research to see what playing above Level 50 would be like. And so far I'm not sold that I would love it. So, I have moved on.
Oblivion - I put a few hundred hours in over the course of a few years. I loved the variety of approaches I could take to the game, and I loved the mod scene. I wouls spend hours making a modlist that focused on combat - overhauling it and making it dangerous, fast-paced and challenging. And then I would play Oblivion as a combat game - adding mods to tweak the monster spawns accordingly. Then, I would retool everything to make it a stealth game. And then I would load up all the best quest mods and play them. Lots of fun, lots of replayiabilitiy!

I understand that others find different things fun. But I do not understand forcing yourself to play a game through to the end that you have stopped enjoying.

Let's see...

81.3 hours past 2 weeks divided by 14...
5.78h a day.

But that's a roughly estimated number. I don't game as much on weekends because I work part-time. I'm also on and off gaming, and I've been playing a lot lately. I've re-installed Battlefield 4 and I guess I'll be playing it for a while, so my gameplay time won't be logged on Steam.

Also, "5 or less" and "6+"? What if it's over 5 but under 6? :D
