Yep, but people would make bad aliens for sure. I imagine peaceful worlds filled with advanced forms of life and then we come along and "bring them democracy".

Photographs and other evidence have to be considered valid at a certain point; to some extent, an individual's own words (in Hitler's case, Mein Kampf) can prove the past to be true. There's actually some interesting ethical points in Kant's theories on the categorical imperative which essentially dictate that both trust and honesty are necessary for a functional society, which I think re relevant to the argument of "can we trust history". Quite frankly though, people who deny the documented history about Hitler are mostly idiots who hang out on /pol/ and think that their conspiracies have legitimate grounding. There is far sufficient documentation of the past, and if you want to critique the documented evidence such as the Nazi archives that were uncovered detailing their atrocities, you could, you know, look at the massive graves left behind by genocide in Europe. That works too.

Uh, not so sure about that. While his rhetoric targeted rich Jews because it was a more popular opinion (Of course blame the rich Jews who sabotaged Germany and let your sons die last war because they were hoarding gold, not a stereotype with popular sympathy in a country devastated economically by war or anything) he certainly was content with killing all Jews- the evidence doesn't suggest that he only had rich Jews rounded up, and arguing that he wasn't attempted to eradicate all Jews is historically fallacious. His "Final Solution" was explicitly targeted at eliminating "lesser" races to create a pure Germany (and, by extension, Europe, and eventually the world). Some Americans sympathized with Hitler, but that doesn't mean Hitler wasn't evil. And those numbers, 6 million, are supported by heavy evidence. While the blood isn't directly on his hands, his rhetoric and cadre of supporters instigated the violence. The "facts" that you're saying are false are contrary to commonly held, highly evidenced views that look at the situation very seriously. Honestly, the divisiveness of your so-called facts reek of /pol/ and other cesspits of factual inaccuracy. I'd like to see a single legitimately respected scholar who holds those opinions.

It's your right to think that, but the statistics are much higher, according to almost every source, than you're indicating, and Hitler would be no stranger to betraying his "allies".

All from reputable sources that have evidence-based backgrounds. I haven't seen anyone short of maybe Iranians (and one Egyptian guy, but I don't know if he was representative) who deny the Holocaust citing figures much lower than 3 million.

You mean like reciprocal bombing? Yeah, that's war.

For example the destruction of Dresden was a direct answer by the United States Army Air Forces for Germany completely leveling Coventry, England. War is hell, an evil all its own, but fighting back is not the same level of evil as picking the fight.

True, but many of those atrocities are war related, such as incidental civilian casualties, or crimes committed by individuals part of a larger whole without authorization or orders from above. While saying war naturally brings rape and civilian casualties is callous and dismissive, these were not sanctioned like the internal cleansings in Russia and Germany during the time.

Well, Nanking was actually a different case, because it was condoned by the Japanese officer core and to a lesser extent the Emperor.

Mind you, I heard about this in my Japan-Korea History class taught by a Korean man, but I believe that it is an accurate depiction based on the external sources he cited.

Just adding the tiny hint that i have heard too many reports on how things differ from "official" history and also on reports on how "opposing" individuals are treated.

You also may or may not have noted too that both trust & honesty are very much close to a low already. This will differ regionally but i'm speaking on a more global scale.

As a suggestion for the latter check out this http://petreraldia.com/reportajes/primera-aplicacion-de-la-ley-mordaza-en-petrer-y-primer-escandalo.html.

Spain has a new law, translated "Citizens’ Security Law"

In the article (you could have used google translator for) a spanish women criticized and caricuratized that spanish policemen used a parking lot reserved for disabled. She shouted this at facebook and promptly got a subpoena / court order which fined her for violation with this said new law by posting a critical stance to facebook. The confronted policemen obviously checked their "arsenal of retribution" and found the new law fit for the duty.
