Problem with unknown key (Apparently Hitman Sniper Challenge)

So I got a supposedly "Hitman Sniper Challenge" key from a friend yet it's format is set in 5-5-5-5-5. I've contacted steam and the only thing they've said is that it cannot be activated on steam. Is there another step I'm missing? Or is this just something else entirely?

If they said its not a steam code then maybe its not a steam code.

nah, they just said it can't be registered on steam...guess it doesn't work then..oh well
