So I really want to play some good RPGs this summer. When the summer sale swings by, I'm going to pick up a couple. Which ones should I get? I'm getting Dragon Age Origins and the Witcher 2 for sure. I already have played the Elder Scrolls games, Torchlight 2, LoG and I have Baldur's Gate in my backlog. Are there any hidden gems in the RPG section of Steam? Or any good ones I don't want to miss out on?

EDIT: When I talk RPG I mean less APRG like BL2. BL2 is tons of fun but I'm looking for a more classic RPG feel. Dungeons & Dragons, Final Fantasy, and Elder Scrolls feel.

EDIT 2: People have also brought up rogue likes which are a personal favorite. I have BoI, DoD, and FTL but if others have more, it'd be appreciated.

You may also enjoy some of the Fable series. I little more cartoony/lighthearted at times, but can still be quite fun.

There are plenty of good CRPGs on steam. Here are a few that you might want to keep an eye on:

Avernum: Escape from the Pit is a solid CRPG with fun tactical battles and good writing. A remake of the first Avernum (which was a remake of the first Exile...).

Geneforge is another series by the same person who made Avernum. Unique setting and good writing makes this one a winner, even if the graphics look a bit dated.

Eschalon has a good character design system and a nice feel to it. A bit on the short side, but fun.

Legend of Grimrock takes the classic Eye of the Beholder-style gameplay and gives it a modern coat of paint. Was a strong competitor for my Game of the Year last year.

Arx Fatalis takes a lot of what was good about Ultima Underworld, and makes it a bit more accessible. The developers did actually want to make an Ultima Underworld 3, but were turned down.

Also do yourself a big favour and play System Shock 2, one of the most atmospheric games ever made.

I've never played any Fallout before Fallout 3. I liked it and New Vegas. Do you think the first two hold up and would still be good? I've heard good things, but I always assume that's the person's nostalgia kicking in, and they were only good at the time.

If ur all bout graphics and younger i guess it won't make an impact on you as the rest :) but storyline&gameplay is what matters first, graphics can be even ignored.A friend of mine plays a text based rpg sort of - Cataclysm: Dark Days Ahead

Is the storyline that good? Bethesda never even seems to try in their story lines. Fallout 3 and New Vegas story lines were pretty boring. Skyrim's was okay. Oblivion's was just awful.

The storyline are alright, the writing is considerably better than that in Fallout 3, and a bit better than that in New Vegas, and the world just feels more dangerous & unforgiving in Fallout 1 & 2.

Fallout 1 & 2 still hold up really well. The interface is a bit clunky, sure, but the parts that made them beloved classics (the setting, writing and feel) is still there.

also, didn't Bethesda not make 1 and 2? googling.... yep, it was interplay for the first 2, and tactics i believe. so, also, prepare for a different type of game.

Breath of Death VII, Cthulhu Saves the World, Precipice of Darkness 3 & 4, Anodyne & To the Moon. These are all like classic jRPGs, pretty fun. I don't have them all yet though I still need to get Precipice of Darkness 4, Anodyne & To the Moon.

To the moon is a very good game but not at all an rpg, nor a jrpg... it just have a joke about that, nothing else... I think it fits more in graphics adventure although I like thinking it as an interactive story :)

Like others have states, the Gothic series (really only 1 and 2) are great, also the Risen series, Dungeon Siege series (again I only like 1 and 2), Fable the Lost Chapters, The Witcher series are also great games in my opinion. In addition, while you cannot find them on steam, the Neverwinter Nights series is great and is available on GOG i believe. Also, the Mass Effect series is one of my favorite series, though it may not be what you are looking for, you should definitely try them out.

Are you kidding me? Gothic 3 is great, unless Metacritic is not your god, which tells you how you perceive the game. This is a fantastically atmospheric game, an adventure like previous games in series.

I liked it as well, but I was lucky since I played it after all major bugs were fixed. Metacritic votes are mostly related to the first days of the release. A defect still exists though, It lacks a good story like the previous ones.

lol, it just can't stands with Gothic I & 2. These are games that I love, and I really enjoyed Risen too, Gothic 3 can't compare to them even with the community mod. Fun game but that's all. Also I've pre-ordered it and payed full price for the CE, so I'm probably the last person to say this only based on reviews and/or other people minds..

I guess it is because I played it back when it was newly released and the bugs I had were so horrible I just got fed up with the game and moved on to other ones. I haven't tried it out since, though with the community patches and since I do love the series though I may give it another chance, this talk is making me want to replay the entire series now.

I had problems with Gothic 1. The controls were odd, nothing was all that clear (such as finding out after an hour I have a place to stay), and there were too many areas where I fell and had to reload, and being in town with no threats other than falling, I didn't save much, and never made progress. It needed a log and a control system less confusing/aggrevating.

Many people don't like the default controls, but there is a alternative WSDA + mouse mode in the options. In Gothic 2 the user interface was improved a bit.

Yes, I am pretty sure I changed the controls to something I thought was more comfortable. The only real problem I had with the game is that it crashed at the very end every single time so I was never able to actually finish it! Still thought it was great though.

Gothic 4 no longer exists, now it's named just Arcania. It isn't a Piranha Bytes game, it's totally different than Gothic. It's a sort of hack'n'slash..

King's Bounty is a great strategy RPG, easy to pick up. Hack Slash Loot is a simplified top down dungeon crawler that is random and difficult. Dead Pixles is an Action RPG I've put a few hours into.
These are just a few often overlooked games that are both affordable and fun.

I liked Dead Pixels a lot, and I'm gonna go for the rest of the achievements some day - but I wouldn't call it RPG at all. Is the ability to buy upgrades to your stats really enough to warrant that label? I think people playing Dead Pixels for the RPG in it will be seriously disappointed.

Sword of the Stars: The Pit is a fantastic roguelike. If we call Dungeons of Dredmor a roguelike with training wheels, The Pit is very similar, but removes the training wheels.

For actual RPGs, Breath of Death VII and Cthulhu Saves the World are pretty fun and VERY cheap, Drakensang is pretty similar to Neverwinter Nights and was in a bundle recently, Recettear and Chantelise are just fantastic all around, Legend of Grimrock is a fantastic throwback title, and the Geneforge series is pretty good if you want a lot of bang for your buck.

If you're willing to venture outside the realm of Steam, the Laxius Power trilogy are massive 35-75+ hour classic-style RPGs with mature tones. The best part is, they're free! The sequel trilogy, Laxius Force, was just on sale on GMG. The translation from French is a little rough around the edges, but nothing is unintelligible and it gets better with each entry.
