I'm a minority here but I couldn't finish it. I simply got bored really fast, in chapter 1. It felt less self contained and atmospheric then Witcher 1. I also didn't like the combat system. It's really slow, especially since W2 it's supposed to be an action game, making it anything but action.
But's it's a good game so you should play it. But DON'T skip W1.

Well I want to properly play it before answering, just played around 1h of it on the 360

I'm playing it now (want to finish it before 3rd one comes out), I'm 26 hours in and I love it. Great RPG game. The atmosphere was better in the first game IMO but this one is better in every other respect (better gameplay, better dialogues, better voice acting, feels more professional and polished and story is more interesting plus cut-scenes are good looking and interesting plus the game has amazing graphics and great optimalization). Definitely worth it if you like RPG games.
