Would be a nice feature. It would be very annoying to set up a private giveaway that goes for a week only to find out someone leaked the giveaway to a friend or an alt account and have them win.

Discussions, ideas and input is welcome.

I fully support this.

It is private for a reason. Cult if you somehow manage to implement this, i dont know how but i will find a way to get you a copy of Indigo Prophecy on Steam

Especially when you only have 20-25 people in your private up until the last hour. Then you get a rush of hundreds of entries unexpectedly. Mostly I've seen people being misled by private links being shared.

If it's private, I don't see any reason to fear abuse from people being able to remove entries from their own giveaway, but if possible, make it permanent? Else it would be equivalent to kicking a spammer from chat.

I had to have a private giveaway of rock of ages be removed earlier and started a new one all over again because it seems someone leaked the giveaway.

I had the same problem with one of my giveaways. Now I would of let it slip if the person who did crash my giveaway bother to write a comment or something. Yet he had no comments or giveaways and wasn't doing anything good for my giveaway or the community.

Yes, I also think that it would be a great feature for private giveaways.

I like the idea as well.
What I would also like, would be a function to make a private giveaway, which is publicly visible for certain people.
For example make a giveaway, which is only available for people from (a) specific region(s). This way all the region restricted games could be gifted, without somebody accidentally entering and of course no point generation.

Not sure, sounds like a sketchy idea, but helpful.

Love the idea, if you are making a gift private you should be able to chose who participates on all stages, not just the first.

There's a downside with this though. Since we all live in different timezones this could mean some people wouldn't be able to join the giveaway if it ends while you're either asleep or away and you were unable to approve their entry.

This idea might work this way: Anyone that the private link reaches may be able to enter it. But when the giveaway ends, the winner isn't chosen right away. Instead the system would wait for the gift giver to look at the people who entered, remove the check boxes next to the names of the people that somehow got in uninvited, and then give it okay for the system to pick a random winner. So it can be the responsibility of the giver not the site.

Actually, the only difference between yours and his is that when the giveaway ends those few that has NOT been approved need to be either approved or removed in order for a winner to be chosen.

You can, of course, still approve entries while the giveaway is ongoing, just like you wanted. That way the creator only has to check the remaining 20 users (as you say) that entered in the last few seconds.

Alright, I kinda misread. :) I guess what I wrote can be some sort of add-on for your idea then as you'd be able to approve/remove entries during the giveaway, but those few that YOU was unable to approve because you were afk for some reason, would still have a chance.

You're getting all your private giveaways from 4chan? You don't like the idea that someone would be able to remove you when you're not really invited in the first place? Make sense.

Everyone who joins deserves to get it ;)

Everyone who's invited, yes. Redirects from 4chan should be instantly banned. If you're actually saying you're one of those who enters any private giveaway you weren't invited to, then you're an asshole.

What if the giveaway ends with no entries?

1 decade ago

Why would it end with no entries? You make a private giveaway for a reason - to invite certain people. You don't remove them all for fun.

1 decade ago
Permalink

Although I haven't tested it, I'm going to assume: Nothing at all. We can already do this by not handing out the private giveaway's link.

Private giveaways also don't generate points so there is no chance what so ever of people making giveaways to increase their points.

Private giveaways that require you to beg to get access to peoples steam groups is already an awful idea, just puts people off gifting at all.

1 decade ago
Permalink

Private giveaways should let the giveaway creator send out emails that have a single activation to activate the invited persons entry. That way the Giveaway creator has full control over who he invited and the invite can't be abused.

Sounds like a bit of work. First you'd have to get everyone who you want email or steamgift profile, then send them out (assuming it's an automatic system), you'd also have to make sure it gets past spam filters and the like.

Private giveaways are invite only.

1 decade ago
Permalink

Not really, since anyone with the link can join, invited or not.

I like the OP's idea of being able to kick people from giveaways (private only, of course), since it gives full control to the person creating the giveaway. Passwords and secret links can be leaked, but if the creator can kick people from their giveaway at will, you can make sure only the people who are invited can actually win. It also removes the need to contact an admin whenever a giveaway gets leaked.
