The price you pay in the market does not represent the value of the key itself.

Traders need to add the 10 % that valve gets off market purchases plus profit for themselves.

Actually, that's 15%

In general no one goes off of the Mann Co Store, from what I've seen at least.

If you decide to deal with traders you can get them in the $1.80 to $1.90 range, paid by Paypal.

If you want to buy them "safer", Community Market or TF2Shop.net (currently $2.25) is the next best bet. Mann Co Store is the most expensive.

Well the first thing you do if you want to start trading in keys is to buy one from the MannCo store to get a premium account.

Unless of course you already owned TF2 prior to it going F2P (like from The Orange Box).

When you pre-ordered Don't Starve it came with 2 copies. I sold my extra copy for like 2-3 keys I think.
Maybe that's the reason?

It [was] at 7.49 on the first day of the Humble Store sale iirc, and that's the cheapest it's ever gone [when it's on sale] (no doubt because of all the free game giveaways as mentioned elsewhere in this thread) - during Halloween is another period where I remember it was on sale on both Steam and using the Humble widget, again for 7.49

No, it hasn't been bundled, and aside from the GOG fall sale last week I don't remember having seen it for less than 50% off. When the game was still back in alpha it was possible to get a 2-pack for like $6 or something but that was quite a long time ago.

I also got a 'free' Steam key for Don't Starve for pre-ordering the Eets Munchies Early Access beta (2-pack) from Klei (via their Humble widget), but I don't think that would account for very many, if any. I have to say that was a very nice and sensible gesture from Klei though since they ended up bundling Eets Munchies in HIB9 not too much later. Technically, they didn't have to, but they realized that it would be a smart move on their part to offer compensation. That's the kind of thing that fosters fan loyalty and shows that they are a good developer.

That Fall sale wiped me out. I'm still trying to recuperate.... P

Agreed on Klei's move. +1 for smart business decisions.

The discounts in GOG's sale were good for once (usually it's 60% or less unless maybe you buy a whole bundle of games), but I have to say I was not a fan of the format at all. In order to even get anything you potentially wanted you had to wait for it to pop up on the main page, where it could disappear in as little as a minute or two. With one game on sale at a time and no way to know what was coming or when, to me it was a very ill-conceived and poorly thought out format. People have better things to do than sit around waiting/hoping that something they want might go on sale. Poor business decision by GOG imo.

That said, I did get lucky and managed to snag a copy Heroes of Might and Magic III, however, truthfully that is actually the first and only thing that I have ever purchased there despite having an account for quite some time. The reason is actually simple to be honest: historically speaking their sales have generally sucked in the past. And anything that I might have been interested in I likely ended up picking up (DRM-free) in a bundle elsewhere anyway. Sorry to say that GOG's latest sale has done little if nothing to change my perception. It's a place I might go to to if I want an old game, but I doubt I'll be shopping there otherwise.

I got mine for an old IndieGala Bundle URL a while back, and then a 2nd one for a TF2 key or two later on (for a giveaway). It's never been worth a whole lot in the trading community due to it giving a free copy when you bought it back then.
