http://steamcommunity.com/groups/idlemastery#announcements/detail/666902171288054077

In light of the upcoming Steam Marketplace changes next week, I’ve decided to discontinue working on and supporting Steam Idle Master. As someone who is unable to use the mobile authenticator, having trading cards put on hold for 15 days prior to being listed in the market makes the proposition of selling them a difficult one. As most of you know, the value of each card can fluctuate wildly in that amount of time.

This, bundled with additional security measures Valve has put in place are a good step forward in that they make Steam more safe for its users. For me personally, the cost of this safety is inconvenience. For people in my position who are unable to use the mobile authenticator, this effectively makes idling for and selling Steam Trading Cards a futile effort.

Idle Master started out as and always has been a hobby project. My personal attitude towards it has always been “It’s something I built for myself that I find useful, others probably will too”. The first part of that statement, however, is no longer true.

Going forward: I will be updating the Idle Master homepage so that the “Download” button links directly to the portable version of Idle Master. The homepage will remain online for the foreseeable future, but I’ll be adding a statement to the site that the program has been discontinued and is no longer being supported.

The source code for Idle Master is and will remain available on Github under an open source license.

Finally, I would like to say “Thank you” to all of Idle Master’s users and fans. Without you, a project like this couldn’t have been as successful as it was. For those of you who this security change won’t affect: happy idling in the future!

Steam is changing shit for trades and the market again? Where is this announcement?

Anyway, I don't have a smart phone either, so I use the Steam Desktop Authenticator instead. I had been thinking of getting a tablet for a while, so I finally bought myself a cheap one for xmas. I still continue to use SDA rather than using the official Steam Android app for authentication because I find it more convenient.

It's good that Valve is implementing better security to protect users, but I hate that they're requiring everyone to use it for trades and to use the market. Make these security features optional and make it so opting out forfeits any support from Steam if you fall prey to fraud.

you wouldn't get any support anyway, so that wouldn't change a thing

I don't understand how someone who owns a computer isn't able to own a smartphone. It's not that expensive.

Comment has been collapsed.

It's not that everyone wants to have a smartphone. I personally know 3 people who just don't want to have it - they don't use internet, don't make photos, don't play in angry birds. So it's useless to them, they preffer to have something which battery will last longer than one day (two at tops) and will give them ability to make calls / send sms.

Also there are regions where GSM signal is weak or non existent, so it makes having wireless phone useless.

I understand, but in that case, it's not about being unable to have it. It's about not wanting to.

Me. :)

I still use Windows Phone, but because I needed something for easy internet access when travelling. But unless I'm travelling, I'm never playing/using internet on it/taking photos or anything like that, as I think its not healthy to be connected 100% of the time. Its just like a dumb phone.

And even having a Windows Phone I'm screwed as well as there is no Steam mobile app for it. :/

tbh the only reason i use an "smartphone" is to use whatsapp (and i dont even need one to do so), i've had the same phone for the past 3 years, i concider buying a new phone a total waste of money because i have no use for it, why do i need a gigantic phone with procesing power ? phones are for texting and calling and the casual game while taking a dump.

It's not just about having smarphone or not.

I do own smartphone [even thought I don't really care for those] and can't use it. I'm not getting another one just so I can use Steam App.

jschackles (Idlemaster author, fyi) said " I've still not been able to get the Steam Authenticator working with my phone/carrier. I'm not particularly mad, but it makes buying games from Steam a lot less appealing of a proposition going forward.", which implies that he does have one too.

At least we can still use it for some time (hopefully a long time). Valve will probably never do anything against the app.

Directly from the steam discussion thread,so maybe you'll see this message and get motivated to keep on developing your program, since there is a fix for the 15 days problem. Sorry for bad englando.

Use the steam desktop authenticator instead of dropping the ball on a program tons of people are using just because it doesn't work for you anymore, when it can be fixed? I thank you for making the program and not asking anything for it , but i don't get why you're stopping developing your program... because you can no longer sell the cards you unlock for 15 days? AFAIK you will STILL unlock the cards , so the program will still work for you,if it's for the 15 days stop, just use a desktop authenticator. Thank you for the program.

He also originally backed out of developing Enhanced Steam for Firefox when he felt that it was too much trouble to port the changes he made in Chrome to Firefox. He's very tempermental and if anything inconveniences him or makes him have to do anything he doesn't want to do, he'll drop a project in a heartbeat.

I looked into this and unfortunately there's no good option for those outside the US (ie. a helluva lot of Steam users).

The Textnow.com private number expires after a few days of not sending out a SMS text, and for Steam use that would be disasterous because it's a number which you'll need access to on a permament basis for your acount (with the way they have it set up now).

Valve is the bad guy here because they are trying to get all data they can get their mits on, screw up our privacy and not protect it at all (like in the recent leak). They are actively punishing people who refuse to share sensitive data with them

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

When did a phone number become sensitive data? I get a book listing everyones in my area every year :p

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Sure, but these books contain people you either know or have no contact with (and usually landline phones, not private cell phones), and not random people on the Internet who want to stay anonymous. There's a difference between real life and the Internet, people go nuts, it brings out the worst in us. Just look at Twitter or Tumblr, sickening shit is being said constantly, but most would never even think those things when faced with "real" people. There's a difference between knowing a random phone number and knowing a phone number of that asshole who wrecked you at DOTA2.

You can make one's life very problematic just by knowing their phone number. Lots of potential for trolling, doxxing, or even tracking down and stalking.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Ya but they aren't putting your phone number beside your profile name for everyone to look at. And if stuff gets hacked I'm more worried about payment info and the like than a phone.
Even if people did hack it, and get my phone, I can always change my number. Or do what I do with cold-call telemarketers, blow a whistle into their ears.

I mean hell, they get hacked they are gonna have my Address, that scares me far more.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Well, I was referring to the cache incident, where people's phone numbers (and addresses, and other things, including enough of credit card number to fuck you over) were leaked, and a bunch of stupid people posted screenshots to prove they could see the whole things...

I have way too many business contacts to change my number

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

It was only the last 3-4 digits of a CC, that can't mess with you. Also Steam doesn't display your full phone number even in your account page. Just says "Ends in ####", last 4 digits.. so like your CC, even if people see a snapshot of it, you are still left without much of the needed info.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

4 digits plus address and maybe your name is enough to mess with you, and if you get a phone number on top of that? You could do nasty shit. Most services only require you to verify only 4 last digits.

During the cache incident, their privacy stuff went haywire. It's show only partial number, or the whole thing. You can do a lot with info that was provided.

TotalBiscuit did a stupid thing and talked in detail about that incident, and accidently gave a detailed tutorial how to frak with people with what was provided.

Card price can fluctuate wildly in a span of a few days, much less 2 weeks. You miss it by 1 cent, and you're stuck waiting another 15 days.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

^

This.

To explain better, when you list a card for example $0,10, and there are 30 cards selling for $0,08, 40 for $0,09 and 20 for $0,10, when you list yours for $0,10, you will be the 21th of the line.

So you have to wait the day that there is more demand than offer for all prices (which can be random), and see all the $0,08 cards be sold, all the $0,09 be sold, and all the 20 cards at $0,10 before yours be sold.

So if in that day, lets say, people buy all $0,08 and all $0,09 but only 10 at $0,10, you will drop to 10th of the line, but then eventually there will be more offers than demand and people will list their cards for less, until there is a lot of cards with lower value to be sold before yours, and when the demand reaches $0,10, you will still have to hope to exactly 10 at the price be sold that day.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Not really the same at all, because sellers often reprice their cards depending on supply/demand forces at any given time, and that will mean a new 15 day wait each time a relisting is made (AFAIK). Which pretty much makes it a nightmare for that reason alone.

And those fucking scammers just create an authorised account with the help of a 2-5 dollar SIM card and a week of waiting and continue scamming people as much as they want.
Meanwhile, average users without the mobile guard now more or less cannot sell anything on the market that has a decent amount of daily exchange traffic.
So yeah, great protection.

Fun fact: Valve will not return your stolen items anymore - you're guilty until proved otherwise, which is "are you a Valve-Game Pro Player? No? Fuck off".

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

  • Valve introduced skins/items in game.
  • Valve wanted a cut of the profits from selling those items and skins between players.
  • Valve created the community market, and even added trading cards, emoticons, and backgrounds to make still more money.

We wouldn't need any of this garbage if Valve hadn't created such a screwed up item economy in the first place. They practically waved hackers and account thieves in with the lure of hidden treasures, and now they're trying to patch the levee with duct tape.

I beg to differ -- I have every right to direct my frustration toward Valve. ;)
The hackers and thieves are a close second, followed by the idiots who don't know how to use the internet safely.

It will be discontinued, but it doesn't mean it will suddenly stop working. Steam always knew about IdleMaster and not even once they've tried to block it. The reason for this is: more card selling = more money for them. And you can easily trick steam by changing ID of a game in a file to an ID of a game you want to idle. More work, because you have to change ID manually every time and you need to know how many cards each game drops, but still possible.
