Saw a 3 game mystery bundle from fanatical, and decided to take my chances because I hadn't done it in a while. Instant buyer's remorse.

Such is life...

Feel free to share any similar experiences...

Hopefully a couple of people would be happy with these, both level 1:

"mystery" and $ is almost NEVER a good thing.

It's almost always a trick for a retailer to dump some shit that won't sell.

They will also throw in some gems JUST so someone on social media will RAVE about the deal they got and bring more suckers in.

I just read this article earlier and was influenced to give it a shot... much to my disappointment.

https://www.fanatical.com/en/blog/are-mystery-bundles-legit-your-myths-debunked

This is the first mystery bundle I jumped in for about a year, and now I am definitely staying away for a long time again.

so you believed an article about mystery bundle from a purveyor of mystery bundles?
Sucker.

Here's a way to look at it. I buy 90 games worth $0.25 each, for $22.50. I buy 7 games worth $1 for $7. I buy 2 games worth $10 each, and one game for $40. I've spent a total of $89.50 for 100 games. I sell 100 $1 mystery bundles, and make $10.50 profit. Yeah, one customer posts all over social media about the $40 game, and the two $10 games also stand out. Even the people 'winning' the $1 game aren't really complaining. But the other 90 people.... they regret it

Yup, I am a big sucker for things that are even slightly enticing. And I was willing to take the chance after reading the article. Fortunately this didn't hit my wallet that hard. My main regret comes from myself imposing a hard gaming budget, so as to not let it get too far out of hand.

Same, I have $40 specifically for the steam summer/winter sales and then I limit myself to the really too good to pass up bundles. I usually only spend maybe $50 a year and it's pretty nice.

That's how all gambling works. Really can't understand how anyone who passed elementary school math can think it's meant to bring profit to everyone taking part while the house loses. Same as buying lottery tickets, most people lose their money but at least they can dream of winning those millions.

Think before buying and you wont ever regret gambling since you were already ready to lose your money and are only spending it for the short moment of excitement of opening that lootbox.

People always hope it’s them. Worst is if someone wins a decent price it convinces then that they can win:
Eventually it always ends the same

Well someone always wins and I'd say buying crappy mystery bundles is a far less harmful addiction than most. For the price of one you could open just a couple packs of cards in some T/CCG for example and still need to spend hundreds more to catch'em'all. :)

Are Mystery Bundles full of stock we want to get rid of?
No way! When a Mystery Bundle starts out in life, it is carefully curated by our expert team who only use the best handpicked titles that are bespoke to each bundle recipe. Our ‘Bundle Gurus’ rise at 4am to do yoga and meditate on the lawn. Then sing historical Tibeten hymns lovingly to each Mystery Bundle, before it is sent out into the world for your enjoyment - much like the same grapes can be used to make different and unique fine wines, as can some games for bundles.

Hmm, very convincing, indeed...

Sorry for your experience. Just want to add that what you read is not an article, it's an advertisement put out by the same company that's selling the mystery bundles. Of course they're going to paint themselves in the best light, and claim that it's not gambling.

Logic dictates that if a 3 key mystery bundle is selling for $3, the average game much be worth less than $1 for them to make a profit. If some of those mystery games cost $60, then the average game must be worth much less than $1, and you'll need a ton of <$1 games for each $60 AAA title.

It's what I get for being a completely gullible consumer and my thoughts were a bit jumbled after having read that not long before the bundle popped up. I guess I was still hopeful for a nice surprise yield. There is the thrill of opening a wrapped box, though that's mostly before actually seeing the contents.

Unfortunately you can expect the seller to be honest about their merchandise. Fanatical stating that their own mystery bundles are bullcrap would have been surprising.

You are absolutely right. Though to get three games with the newest one being almost 5 yrs old kind really put reality into perspective again.

I'd buy em for 10 cents each key, but that's never gonna happen

I always treat mystery bundles as buying games for here. If I happen to get something I actually want, awesome. Otherwise I can just brighten someone’s day. Fanatical or GMG (I forget which) likes to tack on that “2-3 mystery bundle for <$2” whenever I buy something and for that little... why not.

That's a good way to go about it, for sure, though a lot of times I just hope to see a really dazzling gem. But I should know from playing the lottery... Some lessons are just not learned, ever. XD

It's as if people forget what site we are on as soon as they enter a deals thread. Why else do people still buy crappy bundles other than to harvest CV here? It's not like we get cheap cards that way any more which was the only other reason.

Not even all that much cv to harvest lol. Games are generally bundled or previously free with low retail prices. But you know what they say about one mans trash

Well you're already doing it right, I was more referring to the countless people complaining in every bundle thread that they already have some games, just want 1-2 from the bundle or whatever, when it's clear they should be giving the rest away. :)

I am absolutely grateful for cheap gaming bundles, giving me exposure to many games that I would otherwise never touch/play and I have found quite a few very nice titles in trying out all kinds of funky indie games. :D So I will keep buying bundles and sharing what doesn't interest me/duplicates.

You know that 5% discount that you get for sharing Fanatical on Facebook. I did it, and someone apparently purchased a game using my link and I got a mystery key. Instant regret. 30 cents saved plus that mystery key wasn't worth it making myself into an advertisement banner in front of millions of people on the internet. There goes what little reputation I have. I'm now known as a PC gamer and a sellout.

Sadly, not something I would play or add to my library. I'm not really into straight puzzle games. I'll probably make a giveaway sometime down the line of it.

I don't think it's a BAD thing to be a PC gamer, but I personally don't advertise, especially not for 5% discount which Fanatical gives away 5-10% discounts like candy all the time.

Yeah, sadly when I was unemployed for many years, I sunk to working as a salesman of sorts. And when I did that I lost a lot of trust from my friends. Plus being a PC gamer sort of carries the stigma here that you're a loner, who plays online games. Same goes with people who watch anime or read manga. I have my outer-image as someone who really cares about his health, but people are always surprised when they hear that I play PC games like it's an unhealthy hobby. Yeah 5% was not worth it and neither was that mystery key.

If you want to try your luck, you can flip a coin, if it's FACE you can keep it, it it's CROSS you put it in here, after a year you can look at the box and see your "LOSES" and maybe buy you something.

Thanks for the GAs, the losses of one are the gains of another

As for similar experience, I have not so instant regret of getting Assassins Creed Odyssey... I so hate games that claim being rpg because you start with 10dmg sword and end with 200000 dmg sword...

You are welcome. They are actually decent games, yes, but I already had them, so it was not much of a yield for me. For the most part I buy bundles when there are 2-3 games I want and then the rest go to giveaways. This time the yield just seemed really low.

I am definitely going to be playing that at some point, though who knows whether that's going to be in the near or far future. Latter most likely, whenever a really good sale comes along. As for getting AAA games in mystery bundles, I don't really ever expect that for myself. Good indie titles are pretty much what I want.

I have bought a Mystery Bundle, from Bundle Stars/Fanatical more times than I care to remember. This time I resisted the little voice in my head saying "maybe there'll be something good". Because I've never gotten anything good in a Mystery Bundle.

I saw a bundle at BS/Fanatical which had 5 or 6 mahjong games and thought surely at least one of those must be good, even though the other games looked like crap. Should've looked more closely at them before I bought.

So here's a train of that because I'm never going to use them. Maybe someone else will get something out of them. Who knows.

Space Engineers. For a while I regretted buying it because I then tried it, was completely confused at how to play and didn't touch it for a few months... but then things turned around when I saw a beginners tutorial online, watched it, then launched the game and used what I had learned to familiarize myself with the game. Since then, I had many hours of enjoyment and will probably play it some more from time to time as well.

So it was a momentarily buyers remorse.

That sounds like a positive experience that perhaps I could learn from. So many times I start up a game and give up on it quickly because of a massive backlog and unwilling to spend too much time on a game I deem to be a waste of my time, and I have to admit, some times I don't get into the meat of the games before I quit and launch something else.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

If you ever start a game that's confusing at first, enough to make you quit, consider watching some beginner tutorials when you have free time. You don't need to commit to playing the game after that - you'll retain the information you've learned anyways, then you'll be able to use that information later when you feel like giving it another try.

There seems to be a lot of games that go on heavy discounts before they show up in bundles. Fortunately most of the time those heavy discounts are acceptable for what the game is worth and if you like it, sharing the extra bundle copy could turn it into a positive experience too.

I am ashamed to say that I don't even have that on my current backlog. The problem of having too many games and buying even more before getting a chance to play what I have is only getting worse with time. But thanks for the heads up, maybe I will install it and actually take a look some time. :D

Sorry to hear you got a horrible mystery bundle :(. I had a laugh today with fanaticals newsletter.

They first announced the playway mega bundle. and then at the end with the mini mystery they say "Size isn't everything and good things DO come in small packages.". So I guess the playway bundle sucks... :P
