I was informed earlier today that I could redeem a CD key from Half-Life to get several games added to my Steam library. Rather than enter every key I have, I thought I might just ask here and see if this works for more games before I go plugging in CD keys from the 150 disc games I have lying around.

Thanks, that should help.

Or at least I thought so, but it seems to be limited to new games. I'm talking about the old stuff, like my old Half-Life: Game of the Year discs. I was hoping for titles on old stuff.

You should read the note at the end: Only the retail games listed above can be registered through Steam. No other retail games can be registered and downloaded using Steam.

It works for some old games, but just lists them as Valve retail games with **** CD keys.

I was hoping for titles themselves.

Not a single one of the things you said is pre-steam. Congratulations.

What is the purpose of doing this? So you can launch the games through steam rather than from a disc? Not giving you a hard time, genuine question.

Less games I need to hunt through my disc wallets for, and rely on discs. I have piles of the damn things.

Installing games from discs:

  1. Searching for the right CD and hoping it's not too scratched and still readable
  2. Inserting it, running install (which is sadly not compatible with 64bit Windows) and entering the CD-key
  3. You somewhat manage to install it, but you also need to search for patches and download them (thats fun if the game is too old and the company went bankrupt), enjoying slow speed while downloading
  4. Playing.
Wasted time: around 1 hour or more.

Installing games on Steam:

  1. Right click on game, selecting Install Game and nexting till end
  2. Waiting for it to be downloaded
  3. Playing
Wasted time: depends on inet speed, HL1 takes less than 10 minutes on 10mbit.

Very true about damaged discs...I have always installed my favorite xbox 360 games for this very reason....been a while since I owned a disc based PC game, but I do remember some crazy slow install times.

OP: "Hurr durr, can I use teh nonsteem keys in teh steem?"

What part of PRE-STEAM is confusing? "Hey guys, lets make a game key for some program called steam that doesn't exist yet!" Yeah, sounds TOTALLY plausible

What's plausible is that you're a dumbass.

Some are usable. I had three keys in my old Half-Life: Game of the Year which gave Half-Life and several expansions / mods. I wanted to know if others were usable.

You - I DON'T FUCKING READ ANYTHING.

Seriously, you're dumb. Read the fucking thread, he succesfully redeemed a code for the Original half life, A PRE-STEAM GAME, on steam. Now, When that happens, you sure as hell get wondering what other games you can do it for, so how about you read the full thing first?

You are wrong, there more than enough retail games that you now can activate on Steam, there's a FAQ page for that.

One good example is Half-Life, it was released 1998, so yeah.. you do the math.

I just used a key for Half-Life: Game of the Year that was released before Steam existed and it worked perfectly well...

A little research before commenting can save you a lot of face, you should try it sometime. ~_O
