Seeing as there are many downtimes on SG recently and everytime there is a sale or so, i'd like to propose a idea

Why not build in a paypal donation button for server maintenance purposes only?

As long as it isn't mandatory, i don't see the problem in that.

And heck if just a small amount gets there, cg should go for a drink with the money :D

I think he deserves it for creating this site.

But I'm sure some will chip in, and maybe we get better servers/less downtimes this way?

What do you think?

I have said the exact same thing before, would gladly jam $100 down that donation hole if it meant more site stability. Let's do it! ^___^

I think it's a good idea myself. This website lets us give back a LOT; so it shouldn't be too much of a worry to kick in a few bucks to keep this place running smoothly!

Or an actual SG Premium :P

Maybe a $5 monthly fee for some cool perks/bonuses.

Edit: Not gonna reply to all of you below. By perks I mean cosmetic perks. Maybe a different profile, extra giveaway slots, a star beside your name in the forums, etc. Nothing that would break the site.

What perks/bonuses could you receive? I doubt anyone wants to allow people things like a higher maximum on points or something. SG+ basically has everything anyways

I don't premium members should get extra points or anything. Perhaps just invite them to the monthly coke and hooker nights that they put on for the staff here.

cg would never agree with this.

Angel wings around your nickname during the month that you paid premium for. Like on Bookcrossing. Anything else would be uncool...

make it so you can hide giveaways for certain games without having to install an addon

Good idea! I wonder, though, how much the ads on the site make, what with +/- 50 page views a second. How much is being made on them, and how much more would be needed to get a fatter pipe / better DB design / whatever is needed to make things run better? I'd need to know that before I considered a donation / the height thereof.

Don't think throwing money at it will solve it tho. Not like it is a traffic problem all the time...

If more money means getting a better host, then it'd definitely help Steamgifts.

So, you know where the site / DB stability / speed / congestion issues arise from? You know what hardware the site's running on, what kind of DB structure it uses, and precisely how fat a pipe it has?

I think they said that a donation button would make people think the site is a scam.

I do think it would scare away a lot of potential new members. I mean, a lot of outside people already do think it's a scam, even without donations.

so let them? who cares? we have enough people here that trust the site.

I don't know, they only asked me 200€ to make my account, so I don't think so.

its a good idea, however i think they want to keep this site completely independent from cash donations (dealing with 2 people who give and receive the games willingly through a set of rules governed by this website with the gift never actually passing physically or digitally through SteamGifts is one thing, however it becomes completely different when something that is directly entering the system gets involved.)

Beyond that the money itself would not change the downtime... a majority of the time its due to relocation of server, recovering corrupt data (data corruption would still occur), DDOSing the server on a mass scale (which upgrading the servers might keep it up for an extra 2 or 3 minutes before it crashes).

I doubt cg somehow is ignorant of Paypal's existence. If he hasn't added an option to donate, then it's because he doesn't want to.

Not knowing much or anything about him, I can't rule out that he will change his mind at some point, but suggesting this over and over again, hasn't been working very well so far.

How much do you guys think it takes to run this site? And how much can cg earn off ad revenue? He must be monetizing this somehow - I dont think too many people are interested in spending thousands a month just to keep a site up.

There are ads in the site.

1 decade ago

Yes, but I don't think the ad revenue covers the server costs.

From my perspective of a complete outsider, it looks like this website (and steamtrades) were well designed and realized, but they're stuck in version 1.0. For one reason or the other, bug fixes and almost-obvious improvements are not performed. And the way I see it, the replies-to-my-replies bug on steamtrades is a breaking one, considering the nature of the site. On the other hand, improvements on steamgifts are implemented client-side through SG+, which is obviously not an optimal solution.

If money is the issue, donations would certainly help, but it seems pretty clear that they've been considered and decided against.

The site has downtimes because it has MySQL behind it. That is all.
