Since Starcraft Remastered was confirmed today, and if you look at this job posting, it is safe to say that Warcraft 3 and Diablo 2 remasters will be coming next.

"Compelling stories. Intense multiplayer. Endless replayability. Qualities that made StarCraft, Warcraft III, and Diablo II the titans of their day. Evolving operating systems, hardware, and online services have made them more difficult to be experienced by their loyal followers or reaching a new generation. We’re restoring them to glory, and we need your engineering talents, your passion, and your ability to get tough jobs done."

Also Blizzard released HD Warcraft 3 assets for Starcraft 2 a while back. Undead Heroes, Night Elf Heroes

Never Steam. Blizzard has their own platform, and are big enough to keep with it.

-edit- To reword it to be perhaps a bit more accurate. Blizzard is big enough not to need Steam, ergo they forego it. The benefit of middlemen is awareness, distribution, etc. All of which Blizzard already has. They'd have to sacrifice control and profit to be on Steam, ergo they're not.

But Activision?

What about them? Though they do own Blizzard, they do give a great deal of autonomy (far more than EA or Bethesda do it seems), and Blizzard's brand stands apart from Activision's.

Blizzard retained its autonomy and corporate leadership in the merger so Activision couldn't make Blizzard do anything even if they wanted to :p

Same here. I still play D2 on and off. A remaster would be awesome :D

Restoring could be just making sure they work on new OSes with compatibility patches. Not really a proof a remaster is coming.

But i sure hope they will.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Both games have already gotten compatibility patches last year.

Warcraft 3
Diablo 2

I think this leans more towards remasters, they released the oldest game's remaster first.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Yes, they released patches fixing some bugs on modern OSes but that dont mean all issues are fixed, there may still be more problems they want new blood to investigate. Also could be not only current OSes but future ones as well.

While I could forsee a diablo 2 remake, due to its sucess and the nostalgia factor that people still have, I think warcraft is very unlikely. But this is a case where I want to be wrong.

When they say "restoring them to glory" to me that doesn't mean a compatibility patch, it means a remaster. I can see Warcraft 3 remaster happening pretty easily now, since they did Starcraft.

Warcraft 3 dont have one iota of the success that starcraft have though. Not saying sales number only (warcraft may actually be higher, dont know), but how it remained active after so many years. The amount of people who still play starcraft, a 2 decades old game, even with a sequel released is staggering high, it was like a national sport in korea until recently. Theres still tournaments happening.

Diablo 2 while may not be played as much, probably because it isnt as competitive, is still held highly in people opinion. I dont think warcraft 3 have that many followers.

you'll be surprised how many people still play WC3 with its insane amount of custom maps, heck there are websites dedicated to them, Hivesworkshoop, Epicwar, and even custom hosting bots that can host games with no MS/PING/LATENCY worldwide, there's at the very least 10k active people at any time.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Do you have a source for the 10k players? And when you say custom maps, you mean regular random maps or custom rules like DOTA? If people are playing DOTA and other non-standard games on warcraft 3, its not like blizzard will do a remake because of that.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

the source is me playing and seeing how many people are active, and i'm including both of them, it can be as far as mafia games, RPG games, RTS games, fun maps, mini puzzles, mini games, or even the occasional freaky horror one, my point is warcraft has alot of fan base, and making a remake would definitely make blizzard money.

When you say that Warcraft is not as popular as the other two games, or that it didn't have the same success, please remember that it was so popular it got an MMORPG based in its lore, its community played so much with its map creator that it gave life to what is now know as DOTA, it was the the pillar of what is now a new huge competitive market (DOTA 2 and LOL).
When you ask someone, he may say that he prefers Diablo or Starcraft over Warcraft, but you can't say it didn't have the same or more success than them.
In fact I played the campaign of Warcraft 3 like 15 times or more, while Diablo II and Starcraft II only once or twice each.

You replied to the wrong person, so I didnt get your message.

Warcraft 3 did have success, like i said it before probably sold more copies than starcraft or diablo (not sure). It was a big seller, theres no doubt in that. But i am talking about remaining popular after years kind of success. Starcraft is older and still have a huge following (dying out now), even have tourneys of millions of dollars being on tv, which warcraft 3 dont (was there ever any big tournament of it?). Diablo isnt a competitive game (i cant think of a single cooperative game in tourneys), but you can see plenty of people still having fond memories of it (more than warcraft 3 from my experience).

Also the MMORPG was around warcraft in general, not only the third. Companies seems to prefer to use fantasy worlds than futuristic ones in their MMOs, so it would make more sense that warcraft was chosen instead of starcraft. And Diablo is more restrictive in possibilities of expanding the lore, since its only about heaven and hell, while warcraft have multiple races with different motiffs each. Warcraft also got a movie, proving its popular.

I just think blizzard would pay more attention to those 2 games. And just because they remastered starcraft isnt proof that others are coming like the topic title. But i hope they all get remastered.

You are right but I believe most of the people that used to play it (as well as Diablo and Starcraft) are now in Wow or Hots since Online Games kept becoming more popular each year. Sincerely I wouldn't care less which is more popular because everyone has a favorite one and that's normal.
If I had to give my opinion I would say that even thought warcraft (1,2 and 3) is not played as it used to, it's lore was what became massively popular.

Comment has been collapsed.

Source is me isnt very helpful. A screenshot of the lobby with 10k people would be great.

This seems more of a case where the engine ability to support so many different mods types is popular, not the game itself anymore. If people are only playing mods of mafia or puzzles, its not like they are actually playing warcraft 3. Like many people bought ARMA just to play dayz, or half life to play counterstrike.

And yes, theres no doubt they would earn money in that remake, it is a beloved series. But big companies dont seem to be interested in merely making money, but making WAAAAAAAYY too much money. Theres plenty of things that seems like a no-brainer. Like metal gear series would be great for a remake on pc, bringing all titles here. Yet konami is mostly doing pachinkos (and making lots of money due to it). Electronic Arts have a bunch of beloved franchises doing nothing.

But again, I wish they do make a remake for it. I just think its unlikely, and I hope I am wrong.

99% chance it will never happen.

I do agree with them about Warcraft 1, that game is way too dated to be enjoyable today for more than 10 minutes. Warcraft 2 is still very dated, those games are over 2 decades old. I think they decided to go with Warcraft 3 because that gameplay can still be relevant today.

Shame though. At least they are still using old music from them, in Hearthstone for example.

Warcraft 1 was clunky when it was released already. That needs a full remake, not a remaster. (And then they can retcon the game to fit back in with World of Warcraft lore, which retconned out most of Warcraft 1's key plot points...)

Warcraft 2 was vastly superior and is still playable today. But it shows it's age and lacks depth compared to later games. (Especially given how the unit lists for horde and alliance are almost identical copies.)

Well after reading that I noticed a particular article. . . it seems that the Necromancer class is coming to D3 and that makes me excited since Necromancer was the only class I ever played in D2 (simply because having an undead army was awesome.) I'm really excited for it and wonder how much it will cost and how long before it comes to PC and than at a later date. . . consoles.

Me either. If they do the Warcraft 3 Remaster, and if they release Halo 3 Anniversary on PC, I think I'm done buying new games lol. W3 is my #1 game of all time, I spent over 10 years playing custom games on it, H3 is my #2, couldn't get enough of the multiplayer and custom games. To me that is what makes a game addictive and a success, great community, great community features, easy to use tools for players to make content, and easy ways to share that content and to connect with others. The ability to create, share, connect, that is what makes a game great imo. Great memories of playing the most random and funny custom games and meeting people in W3, and getting 16 people made up of friends and randoms together to play Halo 3 Forge maps we had made. I need these 2 remasters!

This is one of the weirdest programmer job ads I have ever seen. =D

Create conditions for experiences that look as good as they play.

What the hell does that even mean?

Own implementation and curation of features new and old.

Or this.

Diagnose and fix all the things: crashes, deadlocks, overflows, heap corruptions, etc.

Translation: "yeah, it says 'senior', but we are actually looking for a beta tester and general bugfixer…"

Experience debugging unfamiliar code

"Even we have no idea what is in there!"
(Considering my theory is Blizzard never actually made anything on their own, funny enough it would kinda fit into that. :))

Excite us

Ooooooooooookay…

In-depth familiarity with Blizzard products

"Does knowing how to create a rapid-clicker program count?"

Also, sorry, but I don't see where this indicates they are remastering anything new. They would more likely start by hiring more artists to recreate the artwork, textures, and models in high definition. This looks like more for an ad that looks for someone that can help with the SC1 remake.

I wouldn't call Warcraft 3 or Diablo 2 new lol. If you look back at Bliz games pre WoW, these are the big three that make sense to remaster.

Comment has been collapsed.

That is granted, but I have seen people looking way more into job ads than they should have. Even if you hunch is correct, that will take over a year to get anything worthwhile of it… but knowing Blizzard's pacing, more like 2-3. Also, don't forget that they have also dropped almost-finished projects because they just felt like it. So the point is, you can expect something of this, but unless there is an announcement, don't get your hopes too high up. :)

i highly doubt them dropping those projects, 1 reasons.

I do enjoy RTS Games a lot , i grew up with Dune and C&C games ... later on with Broodwar ... Its just the warcraft series never really clicked with me .

Sadly the genre is just dead nowadays :| No one dare make a AAA RTS game anymore ( other then blizzard i guess ) ... and the ones that come out ( Hearts of Iron 4 ) for example are just military strategies that im not a huge fan of either :|

Ah, i see, again, its a shame, esspecialy now that youve expierienced one games enriching lore and story to the universe, its realy odd and i cant understand why it didnt click with you, but you gave it a chance thats all i could have hoped for, so, thanks i suppose, doubt you will try out Warcraft 2 eheh...grew up with dune, C and C, Broodwar, i realy wonder with what else.

Mmhm, it is dead, only indie devs now make games on it, they are not bad games per say but they dont match the greatness of older titles. Well, Microsoft dared make a AAA RTS, Halo Wars 2, but thats just about it.... Blizzard doesnt make anymore, unless we count this announcment i guess...? Hearts of Iron is a turn based hexagon strategy game, those make me barf...last one i played was Tom Clancys End War on the PSP, it was...eh, alright, neat, but i grew sick of it realy. Do you try to follow all RTS games that get made? Cause once a while one comes out and such, you could also watch sergiuHqdragoon who plays nothing BUT RTSes and other strategy games.

me neither. i wish they would rather invest their time in new games. also, remastered version usually are way too expensive for what you get. a 20 year old game should not cost 20€, unless they really redid significant portions of it (which usually is not the case).
