If you want to fix a scratch disc, there is a product called SkipDr. It smooths the surface in order to make them readable again. The only condition is that the scratch must not be on the label side. Otherwise, the data is dead. Check the product at Digital Innovations.

If you have a original discs, just download Isos from the internet. It is legal if you consider isos as a backup of your original discs.

I used the banana solution. Rubbing with a bit of the fruit to get it filled up for two or tree minutes. Then with the peel, which is supposed to have a natural wax (don't know and don't care :P) for the same amount of time.
Get the cd clean with window washer liquid (I know it sounds crazy but it cleans the plastic nicely).
Use a nice cloth to get it dry and test it.

I got a few ps2 games back from the death with this. Some needed a second cleaning but it worked so if you try it, share the experience :)

I hear Sulfuric Acid works, if it starts burning, that's the scratches being fixed.

i would say that being the owner of the cd, you are entitled to have a backup copy for personal use in case your hd and the original physical support are damaged, if you know what i mean. anyway this could change from one country to another, so you better check.
