Just curious - I used to backup some of my games but they take up so much space these days I'm tempted to just say, "Screw it."

There's always a possibility of Valve/Steam going bye bye... but I dunno if I can be bothered to spend the time and money to do this.

cheshirecatgirl makes a good point - backing up can save you time when reinstalling OS/get new computer {crap - can't edit polls lol}

PS: Do games with limited installs DRM count backup restores as a seperate install (I'm guessing yes)

PPS: theemu linked a discussion involving this topic that Steam has addressed before

Do you backup games from your Steam Library?

Yes - you never know o_o
Nah - Steam will always be here - and it will survive long after humanity has ceased to exist
Potatoes is the answer

might add something here later on

With all of the people here that have userscripts that put the newest post on the top of the page it still mystifies me as to why people do this still.

How da hell that you came up with that idea, while alot of Steam games are DRM, always online DRM... can't run without Steam, although there are some exceptions. If you are really serious with that theory, one advice: GOG.

Some games can still be run in offline mode

If I'm totally off base on this post/poll I'm sorry

steam can't run offline forever and blocks access to your games after some time.

On the other hand when steam was starting to get big many people asked valve what would happen to their games if valve couldn't keep steam online; some valve employees answered that they had ways to make steam work without it's servers if that were to happen. This was some time ago so i don't know if they still have the same stance.

About half the games I get from Steam can run without steam after they've been installed.

What games? (Honest question, just curious)

I never made a list but here's a sample
Frozen Endzone
Hive
Legends of Solitaire - Curse of the Dragons
Dungeon Crawlers
Cortex Command
Just unload steam, click on the games EXE file and see if it starts up! You'd be surprised how many games work.

Valve look like they're going strong at the moment (though I'm not sure how much they've extended themselves by going into the hardware stuff) so I wouldn't worry about it. While Steam might make a few bad decisions and go bankrupt before the end of our lifetimes, you would certainly see some signs of it before that day comes. So, no need to worry about it for now, as far as I'm concerned.

Even if Steam would disappear, they'd hardly disappear in the middle of a night without any notice. So no, I don't do any library backups.
It's far more likely that my backup would fail me anyway, than that Steam goes down. ;)

Backed it up when I moved to w10. Trying to get in a habit of doing it more often.

Good on ya!

I'm so horrible at keeping up with this good practice

I'm sure I would need to reinstall w10 before I played most of my downloaded games and with limit on how much I can download every month I agree with you. Back up is sadly needed, just need to do it a bit more often.

Backing up Steam games is nice when you do an OS re install or get a new computer, saves you the download of humongous big game files.

But backing up because Steam might go belly up?

Nahh don't see that happen and not sure if the games will work at all without Steam being there.

Too expensive to bother, I'm not going to buy 2 or 3 hard drives just for that. Also, it would take a lot of time.
The way things seem to be headed right now I doubt we'll have to worry about it this decade.

Valve has a virtual monopoly when it comes to PC gaming. I wouldn't worry too much about it.
Plus, you have to remember Steam is DRM. So, backing up your files wouldn't do much without having Steam running.

Technically it's a oligopoly, but yeah, they're by far the biggest.

I do it, but only for good games that I can play offline. Games with extra DRM can't be backed up as far as I know.

Sometimes I make backups for games I don't want to update.

I never thought about that. I should do it for the 34 or so games I actually care about since pirating them would surely be too much trouble in the future.

No, why? I can download them anytime i want. And if steam will go down i'll just pirate them.

I backed up everything when I built my tower, that made my life so much easier. A couple file caches needed verification, but it was nice.

Generally speaking though, there's no real need. I can just re-download something if I need to. My internet is pretty good so it's not a huge drain

While I have plenty of space (well, sorta, only 1.5 TB free), never saw the need. Even with this mediocre 100/15 internet, I can just download most games in a reasonable time.

I wish I had even half of that... I'm stuck with a 500 GB drive, and I would need a new case to add a second one

mediocre 100/15 internet

7/0,4 here in Italy, and that's above the national average :(
You should revise your definition of "mediocre"...
By the way, may I ask you how much do you pay for it?

It's an overpriced one: if I convert, it is about 26-27 Euro. Sadly the ISP who'd provide 1000/200 for €13 is not in this block, so I'm stuck with the second worst ISP. :/

I'd sign such a contract immediately... my family pays almost 50€ monthly for not so useful unlimited phone calls and the aforementioned 7/0,4 internet, and that's the best we can get, until fiber optic get laid near our town (2020 at best, judging by the current situation)
And ADSL contracts are bound to the phone line, so we can get either phone only, both, or none that could happen only in Italy

Sorry for the rant, I'll just end it here...

yes. for example see this discussion: https://www.reddit.com/r/Games/comments/18mzcn/i_asked_steam_support_what_happens_to_my_games_if/
somebody actually asked from Steam support about this and their response is here: https://i.imgur.com/4sa1Ln6.jpg
"in the unlikely event of the discontinuation of the Steam network, measures are in place to ensure that all users will have access to their Steam games."

Also Mr Gaben has said following:
"Unless there was some situation I don't understand, we would presumably disable authentication before any event that would preclude the authentication servers from being available." He added, "We've tested disabling authentication and it works."
http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1363430

what these "measures" are is a big question mark though.

Even if Steam did go down (and it eventually will, like all good things) I'm sure Lord Gaben will come up with a viable solution for us. I think this is something we need not worry about.

I do it rarely for huge games that I will install again, but I'm getting used to play a game to completion before uninstalling it.
