if the thread is active, I'll play some music, and just refresh over and over, and copy and paste into steam, which I have open to the product redeem page. I've managed to redeem 3 keys from the forums so far, so it's entirely possible, just not easy

It's not really 1 second and then it's gone. Even if you catch a comment 1 second after it's posted, in order to check it you still have to copy and open the link, and in that amount of time it's always possible there was somebody faster. It's not bots, it's people.
