While this is definitely a viable option for some, I sadly must inform you that grocery prices here in Germany have risen to such an absurd amount that I now have to watch every cent I spent, so that's not really an option to me.

what guy the guy that says $3 is too much but pay double for more games

Ragging on people that live on the breadline for daring to spend a little of their hardearned on having fun is trash tier stuff.

well don't start moaning that you need to put up with ads then - i for one am not bothered by them

I for one am not bothered by them
That makes perfect sense. If my memory serves me right you even watch ads "professionally" to make a penny on the side, don't you? π

need help - what do you guys know?
i use loot tv as one of the main ways to earn with it
Comment has been collapsed.
oh yes that is correct i do get games sometimes from them - decent little way to get some free/cheap games but not used it for a few weeks though

i am just shocked that sites like this exist! to be honest, the earnings are a joke and not even worth the electricity

why you can load it up and just run it in the background

These kinda sites never worked for me, which is great honestly, but there was a Disney website that let you watch ads and you could earn a month of membership on one of their mmos, once per account, so that was great, I remember having a good deal of fun running the ads to have more fun on ToonTown.
I feel like watching ads, or letting them play, is a bit better than filling up surveys. Because your personal information is worth more than a penny, right. But I suppose the ads also do some shenenigans.

Yeah, don't be that guy.
You sound like that dick collecting for Concern who stopped me in the street when I was a student. It has stuck with me because she followed me the whole way down the street to berate me. "I can't afford β¬20 a month." And she responds "you're a student, I'm sure you spend more than β¬5 a week on beer."
I was like "How dare you! You are here lecturing me, while you get commission for every moron who signs up. I barely have β¬5 to spend on beer. My friend and I go to support a band playing every Wednesday night (a friend was in the band) and nurse the one beer for the entire evening because we can't afford any more." She said "see, you prove my point, you would rather have a beer than help starving kids." I told her to back off and crossed the street to get away from her.
That was the truth. Yes, we spent that β¬4, or whatever it was, on a beer once a week. We were entitled to that much. Regardless of how strapped your financial situation is, you're entitled to a little bit of enjoyment.
To this day, I don't give money to Concern, Amnesty, or any of those charities that employ those tactics. It's BS.
Having said that, the ads don't bother me too much.
Comment has been collapsed.
What that Concern chugger did to me, you did exactly this to the poster above saying "you can't afford β¬3, but you can afford Humble Choice." It may be an either/or for that person. It is not fair to point out what they buy/don't buy.
SG does rely on the ads and patreon memberships to survive. I get that. But maybe don't call people out on what they do with their money. That's kinda bad.
Comment has been collapsed.
well then if you don't pay to remove ads you shouldn't ask to remove ads then
Comment has been collapsed.
But whether or not the above user can afford Humble choice is none of your business. It just wasn't nice. You shouldn't say shit like that to people.
Anyway, I feel like I'm beating a dead horse trying to get you to understand why that is bad.
Comment has been collapsed.
it is when they ask to cheat the system and remove ads without paying the fee which is there to help keep this site running - give me a free way to abuse the ad system but i will also buy games every month
i wasn't being nasty i was asking why if Β£3 is too much they can spend Β£6+ a month on games (i have nothing against you of course)
also to come back to your beer point the OP wants the benefit of what they are paying for (in this case no ads) rather than help kids which you didn't ask to do (not having a go again but you didn't ask to sign up) and just to be clear to everyone charity is good and i give Β£12 a month to cats protection (not bragging)

It's not just SteamGifts - where I frankly don't really mind the ads because I don't enter giveaways.
I noticed the other day that uBlock Origin doesn't seem to be blocking ANY ads anymore.
I vaguely remember this happening before but I think it fixed itself after a while.
The internet looks completely different and I have to say it's even more of a shithole than it always has been π

It seems to be working for me.
Have you tried flushing your lists and updating them? It's probably a cache issue. Happened to me before
And yes the internet really looks like the shithole it is with ads on. Not to mention all the viruses and malware you are exposed to every time you open just any page really.

Weird π€ I was going to try what you suggested but it looks like everything is back to normal again. The odd thing is I didn't even turn off my computer in the meantime so I wonder what causes these occasional hick-ups. Anyway... procrastination for the win I suppose

but I cannot for the love of god figure out how to properly block the ad on the left, underneath "My Giveaways".
That's because they are not ads that go through a known ad database. I'm guessing SG made a partnership deal with Fanatical so you have to block those one by one.

Refer to this post.

I just want to point out that advertisements generate revenue for the site, allowing the site to provide you with the content you enjoy. If you enjoy the content of a site but couldn't afford to monetarily support them directly, letting ads show is one way to indirectly support these content creators.
Comment has been collapsed.
Beg to disagree. All the content here comes from the users, the giveaways as well as the forum posts. The site structure hasn't been changed in many many years, and all the while we got referal links in the deal's section, a patreon, and now some in your face ads. I don't feel bad at all blocking them.
Comment has been collapsed.
It was a general point on advertisements. For Steamgifts specifically, I agree that users definitely dominate the content created here, and lack thereof would for sure render this site useless. As a personal cost-analysis, one can certainly decide for themselves whether it's worthwhile to support the site's cost (developmental or server cost) by viewing ads. I just want to bring it into consideration if it wasn't already there.
Comment has been collapsed.
In order to give an idea how much a site with comparable complexity costs monthly: according to the maintainers of SteamDB it's 100-200$.
So the expenses for running the site should be covered through referal links and patreon.
I'd be ok to give some compensation to the volunteers moderating the site and doing all the work. But in my opinion cg doesn't do enough to warrant another Lamborghini in his garage ;)

Click on uBlock Origin, then select "Enter Element Zapper Mode". It will let you pick out specific element tags to block. The reason it doesn't block them is because they aren't presented as a popup or banner ad, so uBlock just thinks it's part of the site.
Comment has been collapsed.
How come using an adblock is exploit? I mean generally. Vast majority of the Web's ad business consists of privacy invading practices. FYI uBlock Origin is not just an adblocker, it's made to protect user privacy on the internet. You can disable it per-site if you want.
I agree that ad usage on SG is very mild (they're not personalized too) and it's unlikely that cg uses our data for advertisement purposes, also Fanatical ads can be useful for us, though the ones between the giveaways are still annoying. However SG is in a minority and using content blockers are good for our privacy's sake.
Comment has been collapsed.
Where in the world do you come from where adblockers are an "exploit" of a website?
The Steamgifts Terms of Service do not indicate that blocking/hiding ads is a breach of ToS. In fact it would be quite ludicrous to try to enforce such a silly rule - what a user does on their side of their web browser is their business, if it isn't against any rule/ToS or actually abuse/exploit.
Comment has been collapsed.
Accusing users of exploiting the website and going as far as reporting them for it is way, way past "just saying." :P
I get your point, but I don't believe that to be true - Steamgifts Patreon has 40 contributors. Assuming they ALL contribute the minimum $3/month (which is unlikely, I expect a few $7 or even $15 tier patrons), that's a minimum of $120/month - and while we don't know the exact cost of maintaining SG, many people who are more knowledgeable in the topic have said that running a website like SG would cost roughly $100/month. Heck, if anything, cg is making money off SG with everything combined.
The ads are a nice extra on the side, I'm sure, and if people want to show support without spending their money through Patreon, then all the power to them to allow ads on SG on their browser. But to each their own choice, is the point I'm making.
Comment has been collapsed.
If cg would active do his job to hunt the autojoiners and multiaccounters, at least big parts of them are easy to detect server sided, than users would be more willing to support the side with allowing ads or using patreon.
But as long as his only work is to hold his hand open and let users and mods do all the work, i am nearly sure that not so many will be tempted to support the side with more money.
More money because the giveaways costs the users money too (and this shouldn't be forgotten).

I've started getting ads again. It seems that the class name of the div which we were blocking before (dont_block_me) now randomly changes every time the website opens. Interesting. Though, I've found a way around this. Just add this in uBlock or whatever you are using:
www.steamgifts.com##.vertical.fanatical_container
www.steamgifts.com##.fanatical_container
naughty cg π

cg finds new ways to unblock our ad blockers! This time he uses dynamic class names :-)
Do you maybe know how to block everything "fanatical" via ublock rule entirely?
Comment has been collapsed.
The line with vertical in it in bitcoin's post is redundant and you can easily get rid of the bottom ad just fine as you so choose:
... ##.widget-container:nth-of-type(7)
I'm not really sure why cg put in the effort to change it as he must have known that there is likely always a way to hide it.

aren't they have "fanatical" in their names? I don't think Deals and Discussions have the same divs :-)

To hide ad on the left panel:
steamgifts.com##div:has(> a[href*="/redirect?"]):remove()
To block the script working with ad on the left panel:
steamgifts.com##+js(acis, window['nitroAds'].createAd)
To hide ad about "sales":
steamgifts.com##.widget-container:has(.block_header:has-text(/(\s+|^)sale(\s+|$)/i)):not(:has(.sidebar))
For some other ad containers:
steamgifts.com##div[id^="div-gpt-ad-"]:upward(2):remove()
steamgifts.com##div[id^="np_steamgifts_homepage_center_responsive_"]:upward(1):remove()

Hey guys!
Hope you all are having a great day. So I managed to block the advertisements appearing within the GA list easily using uBlock, but I cannot for the love of god figure out how to properly block the ad on the left, underneath "My Giveaways".
Does someone have a code I can use?
Thanks in advance!
