In the next 1-3 weeks, I will be buying a new computer. I have 2 different builds that are about the same price. Here's some base information:

I currently game at 1280x1024. I imagine that will become 1080p some day, but not anytime soon. I will not be overclocking and gaming is pretty much all I will do. I plan on adding a 2nd video card down the line (maybe not if I don't go 1080p). The price has to be below $1500. I also plan on getting a few parts from Newegg or such, like a HDD, unless it's just as cheap to get it with the computer.

And please, don't tell me that it's cheaper to build it myself, blah blah blah. I will not do that for a multitude of reasons. Without further ado, here are the most important parts of the 2 builds.

Build 1: Intel/nVidia: Intel
Intel Core i5 4670, 8 GB DDR3 RAM @ 1866 MHZ, EVGA Superclocked GTX 770, Corsair RM850 80 Plus Gold, 120 GB Samsung EVO SSD

Build 2: AMD/ATI: AMD
AMD FX 8350, 8 GB DDR3 RAM @ 1866 MHZ, ATI R9 290, Corsair RM850 80 Plus Gold, 120 GB Samsung EVO SSD

I welcome any advice as to what should be in them, or where to get cheaper individual parts (1TB/2TB HDD, 2nd optical drive, etc.), etc.

EDIT 1: PSU changed from 1KW Raidmax to Corsair RM850 80 Plus Gold. +$45.
EDIT 2: Let's assume I buy a 1080p monitor. This would either have to come after the PC as it breaks the limit or I'd have to dial down something.

AMD R9 290 is too much for 1080p if you're planning to get one of those screens

The PSU is a huuge overkill and not by a very reputable brand. A 600w corsair should be fine.

I would go with the second build cause the 290 is a beast.

also, wat? You're not planning to game on higher resolutions than 1280x1024???
Then why do you need a 290 or 770?

Dude, I used to play on 1280x1024 13 years ago. I mean gawhwhhhdd D:

600W wouldn't be enough for SLI/Crossfire in the future though. The Raidmax doesn't seem too bad according to Newegg and is ~$40 cheaper than 850W Corsair PSUs. I currently only have a 17" CRT so 1280x1024 is my max. And no, I won't be buying a new monitor. This one works just fine and I don't think I even have room for a 1080p monitor with how my desk is setup. As for the cards, I'd rather be prepared for the future than not.

Then automatically 80% of your system goes to waste. A $500 APU based system isn't going to be much different performance wise. Get a better desk. Also SLI? At 1280x1024?

Wattage is pretty much irrelevant in this case. Raidmax makes shitty PSUs compared to corsair. I'd get a 500w corsair over a 1000w raidmax any day.

Dual GPUs would only be if I went 1080p, and by the replies so far, what I have would be overkill for that anyway... The lowest wattage CyberPower has is 800 so I could go with a Corsair RM850 80 Plus Gold. Pretty sure that APU system would be worse than my current setup too.

1500 $ is more than enough of a budget for multiple monitor full hd ultra gaming

8 gig is fine as long as OP is fine with one game on ultra and no excessive after effects usage

Build 2 seems to be reasonable :) but wait looking for a non reference R9 290 or just buy an Sapphire R9 280x Toxic

It came back out super crumpled. I think it's like Bender's trick in the suicide booth with his quarter on a string.

OP I sense contradiction? You said you don't wish to build it yourself and yet you ask for cheaper individual parts?

I've added a HDD and replaced an optical drive with some help before so I'm not totally alienated by the idea. Those or a PCIe slot component are OK, but PSU cables, thermal paste, CPU seating... no way. I'm also paranoid about killing the system with static electricity.

Second GPU is not necessary unless you plan on playing with multiple monitors.

Switch 840 EVO to 840 Pro.

I would go with Intel CPU and R9 290x, wait some time for better coolers for them because the reference ones are carbage, no need to be "only AMD" build.

You can drop the 1000W for 600W. You don't need that much power for a single card.

Two 2TB HDDs for storage.

Get yourself a nice 1080p monitor, otherwise all this hardware is wasted.

CP doesn't have an option for 840 Pro. 290x is more than I would need above what I already have listed. Extra wattage would've been for dual GPUs but that seems moot now. I can "downgrade" to a 850W Corsair Gold PSU for $45 more. I have a 1 TB HDD from my current PC I'll move over and I plan on getting another 1 or 2 TB from Newegg or wherever it's cheapest. If I did get a new monitor, it would have to be after the computer as that would max me out.

I would go with a 290 over 290X looking at the benchmarks(guru3d) the 290X is faster by average of 3 to 5 fps and that is way too little difference to justify 150$ more for it.

no reason not buuy a monitor and make your own pc unless your don't have no fingers or you work 24/7 in which case why are you on a forum you can always pick your parts and then get your local it guy to put your pc together for about $70 which saves money

No thanks. I'll spend the extra to have it all ready out of the box.

lol. 4 egg review average from 225 ratings on Newegg. Regardless, I'll "downgrade" to the Corsair RM850 80 Plus Gold for $45 more.

Reviews on Newegg mean jack

The quality of that unit is highly questionable. It's rated as an 80 plus gold unit because Raidmax sent in a different platform for testing. This one barely scrapes 80 plus bronze. Now, while there's nothing wrong with bronze, it brings into question the quality of these Andyson E units. You're not "downgrading" anything.

PCPartPicker.com Is the best resource for staying on a budget.

I would go for a Nvidia card as AMD are better at the lower end, nvidia is better at higher end.
You should also get a HDD with 1TB or higher.
If you are doing something other than gaming in the background, i would get more ram to help the system out.

That site would be fine if I was building it myself which I'm not. I'm a bit more partial to nVidia since my experience with ATI has been less than stellar. I will be getting a 1TB+ HDD, just haven't looked at the cheapest route for it yet. Nope, nothing else in the background.

8GB Ram is enough for gaming machines. You won't be using more than 6GB with modern game, skype, steam, browser and whatever you want to have running on the background.

"And please, don't tell me that it's cheaper to build it myself, blah blah blah. I will not do that for a multitude of reasons " - i hate to say it, but it is. if your worried about warranty, just go to your local store and find out what their warranty deal is. As far as difficulty is concerned, its as straight forward as putting lego together, if you feel incompetent call a friend who has done it ONCE and your absolutely OK. With that being said, enjoy your eventual new pc, happy gaming
